    DESCENDANTS OF SAMPSON TOOVEY AND KATHERINE SHRIMPTON OF AMERSHAM January 2017, revised August 2017 1 PREFACE This research was undertaken at the request of the Curator of Amersham Museum, Emily Toettcher, who wanted information about the Toovey family members who had lived in the building that now houses the museum. It was very soon apparent that much investigation had already been carried out. The trigger- factor was probably the death of Ronald Frank Toovey on 14 August 1980 in Wycombe Hospital. He was the last survivor of the four children of Frederick Samson Toovey and Sarah Ann Clare. He was unmarried, childless and intestate and, although his solicitors twice attended to try to get a Will drawn, it was too late. The solicitors commissioned a genealogist to act as heir hunter and eventually heirs were identified and the estate distributed. This seems to have generated interest in their ancestry among the descendants of Ronald Frank’s grandfather Henry Toovey (1822-1910). At that time there was considerable interest also in exploring the capabilities of computers for storing and analysing genealogical data. The Toovey family featured in an article in Computers in Genealogy in March 1993 1. In 1995 Richard Boyles wrote Toovey’s in Amersham, My Family History and kindly presented a copy to Amersham Museum. While carrying out this research he became aware of Dr DW Jopling who two years later would publish The Descendants of Toovey of Watlington, born ca 1540. A copy of this, accompanied by a roll pedigree, is in the Library of the Society of Genealogists in London.

Introduction his appendix summarises results from the Chilterns Ancient Woodland Survey for the whole of South Bucks District in the County of Buckinghamshire (see map 1 for details). For more information on the project and Tits methodology, please refer to the main report, 1which can be downloaded from www.chilternsaonb.org The Chilterns Ancient Woodland Survey area includes parts of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. The extent of the project area included, but was not confined to, the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). 2 The work follows on from previous revisions in the South East. The Chilterns survey was hosted by the Chilterns Conservation Board with support from the Chiltern Woodlands Project, Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre (TVERC) and Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre (SBIC). The work was funded by Buckinghamshire County Council, Chilterns Conservation Board, Chiltern District Council, Dacorum Borough Council, Forestry Commission, Hertfordshire County Council, Natural England and Wycombe District Council. We feel, however, that the draft ES does not fully recognise this and suggests poor and inadequate mitigation. There are serious concerns about the impact of the maintenance loop on this community area; a concern compounded by the fact that no noise assessment has been carried out. There is also serious concern about the disruption that will be caused by HGV traffic in the area, particularly with regards to the use of some of the narrower, more rural roads. The impact of construction and operation on the setting of grade II* listed buildings within Wendover are not adequately assessed – particularly in the case of St Mary’s church, an active place of worship within 200m of the green tunnel portal. Comments on Part B: Description of the proposed scheme 2.2.2 We are concerned about impact of the maintenance loop on the wider landscape. There is very little information on the visual appearance and operation of the maintenance loop given. 2.2.5 Further, the HS2 route and maintenance loop will be on an embankment in this area increasing its visibility. We are concerned about the impact of this in particular since the draft ES suggests that Risborough Road over bridge would rise to 15m. Appropriate assessment of the visual impact and mitigation is crucial but currently not included in the draft ES.
