A bed tax, or the Tourist Development Tax more formally, is collected on the revenue from any rental unit used for six months or less. The move was voted in on the consent agenda at Tuesday’s meeting. The rule takes effect December 1, and makes Seminole County the latest Florida county to adopt it, following adjacent counties Orange, Brevard and Polk. Airbnb spokesman Ben Breit and Seminole County Commission Chair John Horan both said the deal was a good one for everyone involved: local hosts, Airbnb and the county. “It’s good for local hosts because they no longer need to worry about these highly com- plex taxes which were designed for hotels,” Breit wrote to the Sanford Herald. “And it’s good for the County because it streamlines the tax collection process and delivers new rev- enue. So we really developed this tax collection tool in service to local governments like Seminole County and our local host community who want to pay their fair share.” Horan praised the ways it would streamline the ways the county could collect bed taxes. “It encourages people who have properties for rent to register,” he said. Horan added that Airbnb and bed tax issues weren’t as big of an issue in Seminole County as opposed to Orange and Osceola, since Seminole County’s hotel industry wasn’t as robust. But he still thought it was good to make things simpler and easier in terms of tax collection.
