The cozy 7,100-seat arena gives the Pirates a distinct home court advantage. The coliseum is connected to the second level of the Murphy Center by an indoor walkway. The floor inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum received a fresh look prior to the 2019- 20 season with new designs and logos, while a new video boards and scoreboards were installed in previous years. Courtside seating was also instituted in recent years. Constructed at a cost of $2 million, Minges Coliseum was dedicated on Jan. 27, 1968, in the name of the Minges family of Greenville, N.C. As owners of Pepsi-Cola bottling operations in Greenville, Kinston and New Bern, the Minges family has provided leadership and support of East Carolina University Athletics over the years, going back to the days when the late Dr. Ray Minges served as President of the Century Club (forerunner of the Pirate Club), from 1965- 68. After 27 years of basketball, Minges Coliseum underwent a facelift prior to the 1994-95 season. The renovations, totaling almost $12 million, have made the arena one of the finest on-campus basketball facilities on the East Coast. Williams Arena is named in honor and recognition of Walter and Marie Williams for their support of East Carolina Athletics over the years. As alumni of East Carolina College, Walter and Marie have endowed two Men’s Basketball Position scholarships, the Spirit of the East Post-Eligibility Scholarship, and an unrestricted student-athlete scholarship on behalf of the University’s athletics program. Further, through Trade Oil Company, the Williams family gave the first $1 million gift ever given to the Educational Foundation in support of ECU Athletics, through the Shared Visions Campaign. In addition to his financial support, Walter Williams has given his time unselfishly in support of the Pirate Club. During 1997-98, Walter served as Executive President of the Educational Foundation. In addition to showcasing ECU basketball and volleyball, Williams Arena is also an outstanding venue for University and local high school graduation ceremonies, concerts and other entertainment events throughout the year. The arena previously served as home of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Eastern Regional Boy’s Championships. The Harlem Globetrotters, National Basketball Association (NBA) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) have also visited Minges Coliseum throughout the years. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have also given speeches inside the coliseum. The Murphy Center Just beyond the end zone of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, an imposing figure fills the skyline. The Murphy Center, a 52,475-square-foot edifice, houses the strength and conditioning facilities for ECU’s athletics teams along with banquet rooms, sport memorabilia and an academic enhancement center. In 2019, a milestone was reached as a training table was instituted for the first time along with a full-service fueling station that allows Pirate student-athletes to grab a nutritious snack between practices and workouts. ECU’s strength and conditioning programs for its student-athletes are based out of the 22,000-square-foot first floor. The Murphy Center was built for approximately $13 million and opened its doors to ECU student-athletes in June 2002. The building was officially dedicated on September 13, 2002. The second floor of the building features a private dining area for recruits as well as a 9,000-square-foot banquet hall and large terrace with a view of the football stadium for Pirate Club functions. Scattered throughout the facility is a stunning array of photo murals, sport memorabilia and trophies. The Murphy Center is named in honor of Pete and Lynn Murphy of Rose Hill, N.C. Pete attended ECU and has been a major contributor to the ECU Educational Foundation as an Endowment Member and has served on the Foundation’s executive committee. He is the former president/owner of Quarter M Farms of Rose Hill and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Murphy Family Farms. He also oversaw the Murphy family’s development of River Landing, a gated golf community located just outside of Wallace, N.C. Pete and his wife, Lynn, an East Carolina University graduate, have two sons, Stratton and Marc. Named areas within the facility are: the Walter and Marie Williams Strength and Conditioning Area; the C. Felix and Margaret Blount Harvey Banquet Hall; the Robert and Virginia Maynard Lobby; and the Bill and Emily Furr Lobby. Because of its location behind the Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen end zone and its connection to Minges Coliseum, the Murphy Center is an ideal place for Pirate Club members to socialize at both football and basketball games. 2021 Roster No. Name Position Height Class Hometown (Last School) 1 Sania Mccoy Outside Hitter 5-11 Sophomore Charlotte, N.C.
