February 2006

Happy New Year!

Let me introduce myself. I'm Pam Brammer Young. I have a B.A. in history from Elon University in NC and have worked in the Virginia Room the past 3 years. My parents and grandparents are from the Roanoke area - my mother's side 5 generations in F loyd county. My mother is currently working to help restore the old Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd where a son of Patrick Henry is buried along with the founders of the town. My Dad's side is a work in process.

We've got great programs this year. Karen Kappesser is teaching "Beyond ancestry'' at the main library February 14. The class, as of February 3, was full! We're hoping she'll agree to teach it again, maybe on a weekend later this summer.

For the March meeting Ms. Denise Smith of the Bland County Historical Society will be giving a talk. Elaine Powers continues to get wonderful speakers.

Jim Nelson has been volunteering in the Virginia Room transcribing the Marsteller (the tombstone company in Roanoke) records. I know the Virginia Room and a great many researchers appreciate his efforts.

The Virginia Room has their first open house coming up February 9. Many treasures wi 11 be on display and you'll be privy to the Special Collections temperature and humidity controlled room where the oldest treasures are kept. The staff has been working feverishly to get ready and hopes everyone will be pleased. They have a few surprises too.

Any aspiring editors out there? The VAN needs an editor for 2006. Try it - you might like it!

Ifanyone bas any ideas they would like to share please email me at PMYoungOO [email protected]. I've got ideas to share at the next meeting. One goal for SVGS is to increase membership. If you have ideas please share them.

Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Best Regards, Pam

Fair View Cemetery Staff - 1929

Bruce Griggs, President of Fairview (fifth from left), is joined by fellow workers at the fountain near the cemetery office. More workers were required in 1929 than today. Graves were dug by hand, and horses were used to provide "power" for much of the general maintenance work.

Tinnell Family Cemetery on Bent Mountain, Roanoke County, Virginia

Amanda Martin Tinnell Francis Marion Tinnell Matilda Grice Tinnell

How to get there: Take RT. 221 South. Beginning at the intersection of 419 and 221, you will go 6.2 miles on RT 221 toward Bent Mountain. After 5.0 miles, you will pass Back Creek Elementary School on your left. After 5.5 miles, you will pass Haran Baptist Church on your left. Travel only 0.7 miles further and then turn right on Forest Edge Drive. Turn right at the next street, which is Cedar Edge Road. Turn right at the next street, which is Vista Forest Drive. Proceed to #8031 Vista Forest Drive, and drive down the long asphalt driveway to the house. Park at the front of the house, which belongs to Mrs. Flannagan.

As you are facing the front of the house (8031 Vista Forest), walk around the right side ofthe house and proceed down the hill until you reach the flattened out area. You will notice that there seems to be a path from this yard to the right side. This path is right near a birdhouse that is placed in the yard. You may also see the white sign in a tree, to the right of the yard, that says, "Tinnell Cemetery".

Alternatively, you may be able to drive to the cemetery if you have a truck with a good low gear. Here is how. After you pass the Haran Baptist Church, look on the right side of the road for the mailbox and driveway for Mr. Arnold Duncan at 7673 Bent Mountain Road (Rt. 221). Mrs. Duncan told me that she thought that you could still navigate the road to the cemetery, which is little more than a clear, grass-covered path up the mountain, wide enough though for a vehicle or tractor. If you want to drive to the cemetery, you should call in advance and speak with Mr. or Mrs. Duncan at 540-774-3385. http://www.geocities.com/heartland/trail/3354cemetery.html

He also provided a Chart of 1669 immigrant Zachariah Moorman's Descendants. Mr. Moorman's wife was Mary Candler (Candler's Mountain Road). These articles will be published at a later date. Virginia Appolochlan Notes l\10NTGOMERY COUNTY OBJTUARIES

Editor's Note: The following obituaries were posted on the RootsWeb.com e-mail list for Montgomery Country, Virginia in March of 1999. We are publishing them as they might be of interest to members researching in Montgomery County. The person posting the obituaries began the seri es with the following:

''My mother and I came across a box of obituaries my great-grandmother had saved from the 1940s-1970s in Blacksburg, VA. Unfortunately we don't have years for most of them, but some of them still have good genealogy clues so I'm transcribing them here. We suspect that they came from the Roanoke Times newspaper, but aren't completely sure. Some of them had dates handwritten on them. I have noted these where they occurred. I have no further information on any of these people, though."

NEWS RELEASE The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania have reached an agreement to hold a state-wide genealogical conference in Pittsburgh on September 29 and 30, 2006. This event, the first state-wide genealogical seminar held in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will undoubtedly draw considerable numbers of family historians to Pittsburgh because Pennsylvania is a genealogically significant state. For three centuries the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been one of the most populous colonies or states, so many family historians can track their ancestry back to Pennsylvania.

Program specifics will be announced later in 2005. Conference planners, John T. Humphrey and Barbara Braden Guffey, have noted the program will feature presentations that will discuss all aspects of Pennsylvania research along with computer and Internet topics as well as not-to-be missed methodology lectures.

Both societies have experience running large conferences. In 1997 the Genealogical Society Qf Pennsylvania hosted the NGS Conference held at Valley Forge, and in 2003 the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society hosted NGS's Centennial Conference. Both conferences were among the most successful events NGS has held.

Society websites: WWW. wpgs.org and www.genpa.org. For further information contact Barbara Braden Guffey, guffeyb@ verizon.net or 412-487- 3907
