Dear Fellow ·Members,

The events of September 11 have caused us all to think long and hard about our famil ies As "family historians" we have the responsibility to keep the memories of those who are gone alive Sometimes we think that no one cares about our "work". How many times have we gotten a "cold shoulder" when we start asJcjng questions about family members? Something keeps us going, though. Maybe it's just our desire to know more about these people. Perhaps, though, it's for times like this. Hopefully, people who lost family and friends on that hoTTibl e day will preserve their memories of those individuals so that they can be passed down to those who come after. How will young child know his parent or grandparent if no one keeps them "alive" in their memory? Our work is worthwhile and we should encourage other to preserve the ir past and present.

At the risk of repeating myself, I want to mention the Ellis Island site again. ln mid-September l finally found the passenger ship entry for my grandfather and great-grandmother thanks to the help of a website. Stephen Morse has created a website that allows you to search more then one field at a time. It is very helpful when there is a spelling error in the surname you are seeking. Anyone with an ethnic surname knows-this is the biggest problem with the Ellis Island material. The site can be found at: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html Thanks to Stephen there is another tool to help you.

I recently attended an old postcard show. I have been collecting postcards from places in England that my ancestors lived in or near. Many date from the time period they actually lived there. Postcards can add to your knowledge of ancestors by showing you places they lived and worked. Many building no longer exist. Old postcards capture these memories for us.

Election of officers will take place at the November meeting. As I write this there are still positions to be filled; recording secretary, corresponding secretary and membership chairperson among them. If you can help with any of these offices, please contact me.

Happy Hunting,

Karen Kappesser, President 514 Scalybark Drive Blue Ridge VA 24064-13 28 Telephone: (540) 977-0067 E-mail: [email protected]

YIRGINiA A~EALACHIAN NOTES SISSON CEMETERY

T his F loy d County cemetery was established near Simpsons, circa 1865 by members of the L udlow B. and Catherine Grisso Sisson family. A large number of the first hu rials in the cemetery were marked with local flat tieldstones showing no ide ntification. Commercial markers were used in later years and some of the native ~ tone s were replaced with the new modern cut stones. From Simpsons, VA on road 65.3 Shawsvillc Pike, turn left on Diamond Knob Road and travel about one mile. T urn left on School House Lane (Washington School used to be in this vicinity). You will be on a very narrow road and will come to a "No Trespassing" sign. Stop 3 little beyond the sign and the cemetery will be up the hill on your left. You will have to hack out until you can find a place to turn around. Words in parentheses have been added for clarification.

A Guide to C hurch R ecords in the Library of Virginia. Compiler: GeraldP. Gaidmore. Publish ed b y: The L ibrary of Virginia. 188 pages; paperbound. Price: $20.00

This g uide is a revis ion of A Guide to Church Records in the Archives Branch, Virginia State Library and Archives, published in 1981. Since then, the Library ofVirginia has substantially increased its ho ldings of cl1urch records. Arranged alphabetically by denomination or re lig ion, this g uide contains a descrii:ition of the records of the Baptist, Church of the Brethren, Catholic, Christian (Disciples of Christ); Episcopal, Friends, Jev.rish, Luther~ German Reformed, M ethodist, Pe ntecostal, Presbyterian, Unitarian-Universalist, and United Brethren in Christ denominations housed at the Library. The records cover more than three centuries of Virg inia's relig ious history. Although not every denomination recorded information about baptisms, births, bLu·iaJs, deaths. and marriages, researchers can glean important genealogical data from the c hurch records. Of particular importance are the parish registers of the Anglican (now Protestant Episcopal) Church, which were required by law to record vital statistics for each parish.

The g uide includes an index, a glossary, and an appendix indicating the locations of extant Anglican parish registers. Each entry in this guide has been described in the Library of Virginia's online Archives and Manuscripts Catalog. This guide provides to researchers fil 11 information at their fingertips about the large and important church holdings in the Archives of the Library of Virginia.

Searching for marriage records about 1835 of either Elizabeth FERRAR or of a Mr. FERRAR marrying an Elizabeth, most probably in the Roanoke County area. HOME S O U R CES AN D LONG-LOST COUSINS

As w ith any o ther kind o f research. don't overlook home sourcesFamilymembersmay have saved o ld le tters . papers. news clippings. and stories that may contain either the exact informatio n you a rc lo oking for about a woman relative or at least the clues to point you in her dire ctio n . B esides the sp ecific detail s o ld letters contain, they often carry the personalities of the write r s . S ome times fi ll e d w ith humor, sadness. and spiced with a bit of gossip (and who doesn't like a bit of gossip now and then! ), these letters paint a portrait of the writer and lend light to her perspective on life .

Also, neve: u~dere stimat.e the information long-lost cousins may have. Interview them! One of my mother s distant cousm s was able to tell us that Catherine Kelly had died in Rochester, New York . W e wo~ild neve r have thoug ht to look there had it not been for that cousin1s information, which we g aine d from the interview my mother conducted with the cousin. The cemetery record we found in Rochester for Catherine Kelly, with a death date of 1850 at 26 years of age, is one of the few records we have of this ancestor.

COURT R E CORDS

Court re cords are often great places to find women because women show up regularly in even the earliest recordings. Probate cases are a natural place to start look.ina. Probates typically deal w ith a decedent's w ill or the distribution of property. Family relationsh.i~s are usually spelled out in these docun1ents, and you will often find details about women, including their maiden names, p laces of residence, ages (sometimes), and personalities. An interesting will we uncovered. showed that one woman left most of her considerable estate to a couple of her mends, while ~he gave her own children only a dollar each. Some probate records are so detailed that they provide genealogie s of fanulies going back for several generations.

When Cathe rine 's g randdaug hter died, the guardianship papers that were fil ed for her children included the addresses of several inherited properties. By tracing the origins of the real estate through property records, we mig ht get lucky.

VIRGINIA APPALACHIAN NOTES CEMETERY RECORDS

In the cemetery, study all the names of people who may be buried in a famil y plot Often. \" e rely on indexes and happily copy the name of the individuals we know. never looking at t.he interment records as a whole. Names of grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and other relauves arc frequently missed because we rely too heavily on indexes. Also note who is buried in nearby plots. You may find other family members buried nearby, and a name that doesn't mean much to you at first may become an important clue down the road.

FOLLOW THE MEN

When searching for an elusive female, dig up all you can on the men in her life. Because many of our female ancestresses had few or no legal rights (depending on the time and place in which they lived), they often left very few records of their own. But fortunately, even if they didn't create any records of their own, the records created by the men in their Ji ves--husbands, fathers, grandfathers, brothers, sons--often carry a mention of these women, or at least a few clues about their identities.

SIBLINGS COUNT

Keep in mind that the siblings of the woman you are trying to find could lead you to her. Catherine Kelly is said to have had a brother named James. Granted, there were a whole lot of fellows by the name of James Kelly roaming around New York in the time period we are researching, but if we look for them in the census, city directories, court records, county histories, newspaper stories, military records and other places where men can usually be more easily ferreted out, we may have some luck. ·

At one point we had our eye on a James Kelly who served in the Civil War. If he had tun1ed out to be the right guy, his records just might have taken us back another generation to hi~ parents. But alas, we were unable to make a connection, and we will have to find another place to pick up Catherine's trail.

GRASP EVERY FACT YOU CAN FIND

This may seem like stating the obvious, but it's important. It also means not relying on databases, indexes, extracts, and abstracts. It means checking original sources, even those where you have come up dry in the indexes or in online databases. There are several important reasons for this. First, the original often contains important information not found in the above-mentioned formats. Maybe it wasn't important to the abstracter to record the names of all the witn esses, but if the witnesses were family members, we miss an important clue by not consulting the original.

GATHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION

By famjliarizing yourself with the laws and government agencies for a particular time and place, you may find other avenues to explore. Were women allowed to own property at that time? Was your ancestress entitled to a military pension via one of the men in her life? What were the
