Indian institutions can tie up with foreign schools for UG courses:

Union HRD minister Smriti Irani on 27th June declared that Indian educational institutions, for the first time, can now tie up with foreign institutions for undergraduate courses. "For the first time in the history of our country, the government of India has allowed our institutions to tie up with foreign institutions for degree programs for undergraduate courses," Irani said in the fourth convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), , at Mohanpur campus in Nadia district. This means, the students will now have the choice in doing two semesters in foreign institution in undergraduate courses and also one semester in postgraduate courses. The final transcript and certificate presented to the student upon graduation shall mention the name of both parent and foreign institutions. Indian educational institutions which enter into academic tie-ups with foreign institutes will have to ensure that students who opt for these courses will study at least one semester for post-graduate degrees and two semesters for under-graduate degrees abroad. Under the previous norms, only foreign institutes could seek permission for academic collabora- tions. Now, the UGC has decided that the highest graded Indian institutions can engage in academic collaboration with foreign educational institutions of highest grade in their country or those who have crossed the threshold limit. The norms, which will soon be notified, also specify a minimum degree of collaboration as per which at least one semester for post-graduate degrees and two semesters for under-graduate degrees have been specified. A window of one year has been provided for institutes, which already have a global partnership, to get their pacts approved by UGC, the HRD minister said.

That being said, most student are likely to have some sort of technology devices, even if it’s just a cell phone. The quality of research and sources they find may not be effective. It is generally believed that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can empower teachers and learners, promote change and foster the development of 21st century skills. The availability of ICT has changed the nature of teaching and learning to a great extent. Q : What are the principles and codes you live by? What are the secrets of your success? Quality & Excellence!!!

I follow the principles and codes to offer quality education and achieve overall excellence. By ‘Quality Education’ we

mean an education that will produce critical thinkers, high achievers, lifelong learners, team players, compassionate

humans, responsible citizen, and individuals who learn to make the right choices in life, and are future ready.

I also feel the secret of my success is promoting a concept what was unavailable 28 years ago and pursuing the same

with passion and commitment. The concept of holistic education with an appropriate balance of academic creative and

sportive pursuits was initiated at CHIREC which has become a benchmark now.

Q : What is your education dream for India? What are you willing to do / are doing to realisethis dream. My education dream for India is that the School life must be a quest for meaning that goes far beyond the limitations of

conventional curricula, text books and standardised examinations – so that when the students leave their institution,

they are secure in their abilities, strong in their principles and confident to face challenges.

A student should be conscious about her responsibility towards the community in the neighbourhood and should be

actively involved in such activities – such as tree plantations, supporting the cause of street children, blind school, old

age home, and orphanage through the community development program of the school. CHIREC and our studentsactive-

ly support these causes to realise this dream.

CHIREC has also adopted the neighbourhood Government school which has been hailed as a Pilot Project of a Govern-

ment / Private Enterprise to improve the standard of facilities and quality of teaching. If all private schools could adopt

a school in the neighbourhood, the standard and quality of education would improve in the government schools.

Uttarakhand School Merit Awards Survey Report

The intent and essence of Uttarakhand School Merit Awards 2016 is to honor and recognize excellence in education. With this initiative EducationToday.co aspires to foster progressively improving educa- tion standards with collaborative efforts of the dignitaries of the industry.

“The true purpose of education is to make minds, not careers” – William Deresiewicz. In the increasingly competitive world today, most academic institutions and schools forget the true essence of education – creat- ing mindful, compassionate and responsible citizens with lifetime avidity for learning. With the Uttarakhand School Merit Awards, EducationToday.co aspires to encourage the education institutes in Uttarakhand to keep up the excellent standards of academia.

For this much detailed and comprehensive ranking, posing several parameters and criterion, Education Today.co team initiated work as early as May 2016. Each and every school in Uttarakhand was sent special survey forms for providing a self-assessment of their education systems, innovative teaching infra- structure facilities, pedagogy, and extracurricular activities amongst other parameters. While there was a significant response to the self-assessment survey – we couldn’t receive 100% participation. Therefore to create holistic and rational rankings, an eminent jury of six highly revered and experienced members of the academic fraternity came aboard. With a combination of research using information on public domain and some telephonic interviews, the jury arrived at their recommendation/ decision.

These recommendations were further analyzed by the analytics team. Following categories were drafted to give the schools a just comparison with each other – Pre Schools, K12 ICSE Board, K 12 CBSE Board, Girl’s Schools, Boy’s Schools & Co- Education Boarding schools. Based on the parameters of academic reputation, individual attention to children, innovation in teaching techniques, infrastructure, sports education, leader- ship skill, management & the value for money – the jury derived at the final results. Special Commendations areawarded to schools with remarkable scores on the above mentioned qualities. The intent and essence of Uttarakhand School Merit Awards 2016 is to honor and recognize excellence in education. With this initiative Education Today aspires to foster progressively improving education standards with collaborative efforts of the dignitaries of the industry.

Uttarakhand’s Best Pre – Schools Early childhood education is the seminal stage of a person’s formal learning years. Studies have proven that 90% of a child’s brain develops in the first five years of their life. The pre - schools shoulder a great responsibility on themselves to make the best of this time and create a strong and meticulous foundation for kids to build upon. The teaching and learning methodologies of a pre-school is dramatically different than the K-12 education systems. Education today recognizes that and hence we have created a distinctive list to acknowledge the efforts of institutions laying the groundwork for a child’s upcoming student life.

36 SURVEY REPORT

Uttarakhand’s Best Girl’s & Boy’s Schools It is proved by extensive research that there are significant differences in the ways girls and boys learn. Several gender specific personality traits affect how children learn. Educational psychologists have found fundamental differences in the factors motivating girls vs. factors motivating boys. Researchers have consistently found that "girls are more concerned than boys are with pleasing adults, such as parents and teachers". Most boys, on the other hand, will be less motivated to study unless the material itself interests them. (Pomerantz, Altermatt, & Saxon, 2002). Some of the most eminent Girl’s and Boy’s schools in Uttarakhand present the student’s with the best environment and motivations for excelling in their choice of academia and overall development. These schools are not only attended by native residents around, but their impec- cable academic reputation brings them students from all over the globe.

During adolescence, a decision related to choice of the right career is crucial as it has the potential to open the doors to success or close the doors of opportunity. Thus, most of the adolescents are vulnerable at this junc- ture. Although we firmly believe‘career’ to be an indi- vidual decision, various socializing agents like parents and family tend to influence the child. This influence may or may not be pronounced clearly, because for most of us “teenage” is the age of defi- ance, individualistic thoughts andself-willed ideas. Being at the crossroads of childhood and adulthood, “identity formation” keeps the minds of children occupied. Vocational choice is instrumental in build- ing the occupational identity. Research findings have suggested that owing to the unpolished and unrefined communicative language, adolescents are perceived as “ego-centric.” Before we jump to conclu- sions, let’s look at a typical case where a child is encouraged to continue with his dancing skills during early childhood and is appreciated for his accomplishments. But the moment the teacher sug- gests him to take up ‘dance’ as his profession; the subtle disapproval is exhibited by not allowing him the right atmosphere to practice, not accompanying 54 54 COUNSELOR him to the venue for stage rehearsals and not being appreciative of his accomplish- ments. Soon the interest drops and the child gets desperate to seek the parents’ approval. He picks up the hints dropped by the care-givers as “medicine” being the most secure profession and the student starts believing that he wishes to pursue medicine. The parents are ecstatic as the decision is made by ‘the child’. Within the framework the passion for dance sinks into ment doubles when parents allow the free- oblivion and the non-verbal influences of dom and remain aloof. Being a Team of Cheerleaders

As I reflect along the length of my life and journey, I realize that there have been both critics andcheerleaders along the way. Clearly, while I have learned from some critics, my greater need has always been for cheers and encouragement.

Everybody needs a cheerleader. We all need someone who has our back, someone by our side. Encouragement promotes growth. Praise lifts our spirits and morale. Commendations increase cooperation. Carping and criticism kill our fighting spirits. On a team, it kills our team spirit. Encour- aging one another and building each other up is indispensable. “Being Flexible”

As a psychologist in private practice, I often worked with persons who seemed to be living at 1 or 10, and I determined it was my task to help them learn to live between 2 and 9. Today's world calls for flexibility. We need to accept change. We've got to adapt to every new situation, condition, and contingency. Of course, we've all got to fill our own role - but when circumstances change, we've got to change, too.

Some years ago, I clipped out of an article comparing today's business teams and organizations to a doubles tennis team. "Doubles partners play certain roles. When one person serves, the other is at the net. But those roles are interchangeable. Each person must be prepared to do anything. If an opponent lobs the ball over my partner's head, I better hustle back there, to return it. If I take a me-first approach - 'That's not my job' - you can bet we won't make it to Wimble- don." Flexibility and adaptability are absolute requisites for any successful team, whether on a tennis court or in the business world.

Teamwork is the only way to reach our ultimate goals, to create the breakthroughs that we need in our careers, our personal, family and community lives. We talk about it a lot, and in moments of crisis, we're often very good at it - helping one another. In sports, we have learned we can't win alone.

So think 'Team'! Develop and maintain a total team attitude and spirit. When we are all on the same page, we achieve something very beautiful to watch - and very hard to defeat.

We've got a team.

Various Uses of Live Streaming in Educational Institutions

- Jaganmohan Kataru Founder & CEO

We are all in the age of knowledge economies, where technology is changing the way civiliza- tions are evolving at an ever increasing pace and facilitating instant communication. Educators embracing the technology early on are making a significant impact in rapid transformation to knowledge economies thus helping in nurturing the talent and honing the skills of the workforce of theirsocieties.

Video conferencing or virtual presence is a highly effective tool of communication for imparting knowledgeand offers significant advantages for educators in this important transition to the knowledge economies. Global educational institutions have started embracing video as an integral part of their pedagogy and live video streaming has become an effective and instant communication medium.

Recording a lecture and on demand presentation of those lectures is the new norm for global academia. Several Ivy league institutes run their online distance learning programs using this technology. Instant live broadcast of important events in a university campus is also possible for the professors and helps them toconnect with a larger audience at once – beyond the walls of a classroom; beyond the borders of a country infact.

Traditionally live streaming of events has been the domain expertise of media broadcasting industry and used to be very complex requiring high level of skills. Identifying this gap between the needs of the academicians and the technical complexities of broadcasting media, a whole new generation of entrepreneurs are trying to make it easy and affordable to live stream their campus events at the will of the educators.

Some of the examples or use cases, benefits of live streaming are presented here:

1.A teacher in the city of Mumbai can teach the students in the small town of Kasara with help of an internet connection, computer & video camera. The possibilities for all inclusive educa- tion are endless. 2.Live streamingthe school events and activities helps parents observe their child’s care and learning activities in real time. This level of transparency is generating invaluable trust between the parents and the educators.

3.It transcends geographical boundaries and helps the school management share events like classroom guest lectures and activities like school plays and performances, classroom projects, debates, graduations and award ceremonies, sporting events etc.with their key stake holders.

4.It helps educators control bullying or ragging on and off their campuses while the students are in transit.
