Inquiry into the status of the Human Right to Freedom of Religion or Belief Submission: Inquiry into the status of the human right to freedom of religion or belief This purpose of this submission is to raise the committee’s awareness that Islam: - militates against “the enjoyment of freedom of religion or belief” - incites to “violations or abuses” of religious freedom - is antithetical and inimical to the “protection and promotion of freedom of religion or belief” Any inquiry into “the human right to freedom of religion or belief” which avoids examining arguably the largest global threat to those freedoms would be abdicating its responsibility to fully inform its stakeholders. Whether it is the nine Islamic countries in the top ten of the World Watch List of Christian Persecution(1), crucifix-wearing “Christians in Sydney fac(ing) growing persecution at the hands of Muslim gangs”(2) or the summary execution of those who blaspheme or apostatise(3), Islam, in practice and in doctrine, militates against “the human right to freedom of religion or belief”. The purpose of this submission is not to illustrate “the nature and extent of (Islamic) violations and abuses of this right” [which are well-documented elsewhere(4)] but to draw the committee’s attention to the Islamic doctrinal “causes of those violations or abuses”. An informed understanding of Islam is crucial to effectively addressing potential future conflicts between Islamic teachings which impact negatively on “freedom of religion or belief” and those Western freedoms we had almost come to take for granted, until Islam came along to remind us that they must be ever fought for. -

2 | Who Wants the Caliphate? Author Biography Dr. Ovamir Anjum is Imam Khattab Endowed Chair of Islamic Studies at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Toledo. He obtained his Ph.D. in Islamic history in the Department of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work focuses on the nexus of theology, ethics, politics and law in Islam, with comparative interest in Western thought. His interests are united by a common theoretical focus on epistemology or views of intellect/reason in various domains of Islamic thought, ranging from politics (siyasa), law (fiqh), theology (kalam), falsafa (Islamic philosophy) and spirituality (Sufism, mysticism, and asceticism). Author of Politics, Law and Community in Islamic Thought: The Taymiyyan Moment (Cambridge University Press, 2012), Dr. Anjum has also translated a popular Islamic spiritual and theological classic, Madarij al-Salikin (Ranks of Divine Seekers) by Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 1351); the first two volumes to be published by Brill later this year. His current projects include a multi-volume survey of Islamic history and a monograph on Islamic political thought. Introduction This article addresses the global environment, with a specific focus on U.S. Central Command’s (USCENTCOM’s) Area of Operations (AOR), and it contemplates the question: How can we avoid losing the next generation to Violent Extremists (VE)? It focuses on Islamic VEs, both Sunni and Shi’ia, addresses the Human Terrain and seeks to identify individual’s personal motivations. This article does not state official USCENTCOM policy or opinions. Today, the United States’ primary national security challenge centers around a problem that, should we “get it wrong,” will have transcendent implications. Terrorism and violence have plagued humankind throughout history, but now the world finds itself at yet another critical juncture. The terror challenge is the nexus of a multiplicity of issues that lead toward it, like the spokes on a wheel lead from the rim to the hub. Alternatively, terrorist vision can inform a multiplicity of issues and lead outward toward the rim, out to where the rubber meets the road. The concept of God of each religion provides the distinguishing difference between one religion and the other. In this paper, attempt is made to present the concept of God in Islam. The pillars of Islam, the articles of faith, and the confession of faith are succinctly presented. Its significance lies in identifying the conception and characteristics of God – Allah in Islam.These features differentiate Islamic monotheism from the doctrines of God in other religions. It centres on the belief in ‘al-Tawhid’ i.e. the oneness of Allah, and the articles of faith. The belief system of Islam is called usul-al- din. The word usul is the plural of asl which means a root or a principle. The practical aspects which is called ahkam, means, the ordinances and regulations of Islam. Sharing the Message “with Courtesy and Respect” (I Peter 3:15) Who is “Allah”? by Rick Brown he rise of Islamist terrorism has outraged people across the world. Many Christians have directed their anger, not simply towards T militant Islamists, but towards Muslims in general and towards Islam in particular. (Most Muslims, on the other hand, direct their anger sensibly towards the Islamist terrorists themselves rather than against the whole Muslim community.) Much of the anger expressed in the West has taken the form of demonizing the Islamic religion, to the extent of accusing Muslims of worshiping a demon. A key element of this attack has been the claim of some that the name Allah refers to a demon or at least a pagan deity, notably the so-called “moon god.” Such claims have even been made by scholars who are reputable in their own fields but who are poorly acquainted with the Arabic language and Middle-Eastern history. The Kingdom of God, however, is never advanced by being untruthful, so this matter bears further investigation. Moon God? Those who claim that Allah is a pagan deity, most notably the moon god, often base their claims on the fact that a symbol of the crescent moon adorns the tops of many mosques and is widely used as a symbol of Islam. It is in fact true that before the coming of Islam many “gods” and idols were worshiped in the Middle East, but the name of the moon god was Sîn, not Allah, and he was not particularly popular in Arabia, the birthplace of Islam. -

Thesis Adviser: Felicitas Opwis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT A Thousand and One Wives: Investigating the Intellectual History of the Exegesis of Verse 4:24 traces the intellectual legacy of the exegesis of Qur’an 4:24, which is used as the proof text for the permissibility of mut’a (temporary marriage). I ask if the use of verse 4.24 for the permissibility of mut’a marriage is justified within the rules and regulations of Qur’anic hermeneutics. I examine twenty Qur’an commentaries, the chronological span of which extends from the first extant commentary to the present day in three major Islamicate languages. I conclude that doctrinal self-identity, rather than strictly philological analyses, shaped the interpretation of this verse. As Western academia’s first comprehensive work concerning the intellectual history of mut’a marriage and sexual ethics, my work illustrates the power of sectarian influences in how scholars have interpreted verse 4:24. My dissertation is the only work in English that includes a plurality of voices from minor schools (Ibadi, Ashari, Zaidi, and Ismaili) largely neglected by Western scholars, alongside major schools, and draws from all available sub-genres of exegesis. -

Reilly The university has released NMC students and postdoctoral shares thoughts about writing a plans for a new building to be fellows share what attracted them history book aimed at reaching the future home of NMC to the department, their current an audience beyond academia projects, and their plans for the future Chair’s Message The start of a new year, and decade, presents opportunities to mark new beginnings, declare new resolutions and voice hopes for a new and better future. It also offers an occasion to pause and reflect on the year that has passed. For Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations (NMC), 2019 was an eventful year, and this issue of our newsletter provides a snapshot, highlighting some of the research activities of our faculty and students, and the important societal contributions of our alumni. Professor James Reilly’s new book grapples with the devastating, ongoing civil conflict in Syria, and demonstrates the importance of historical context and perspective in providing critical insight into this otherwise unfathomable conflict. A historic conference on Ibadism celebrating the remarkable pluralism within Islam; the participation of NMC archaeologists in public outreach events, most notably the wildly popular Science Rendezvous, which annually draws thousands of eager, aspiring students; and a student project reconstructing a Bronze Age Syrian tomb: these events accentuate the wide-ranging experientially rich learning opportunities in NMC. Exciting discoveries can also occur in unexpected places, as PhD candidate Tracy Spurrier learned while studying ancient historical texts housed in Robarts Library, and SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow Moujan Matin encountered investigating the early history of craft production technology. -

Elliott The George Washington University ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the development of Omani-Ibadi society from pre- Islam to the present day. Oman represents an anomaly in the religious world because its Ibadi theology is conservative in nature while also preaching unwavering tolerance. To properly understand how Oman developed such a unique culture and religion, it is necessary to historically analyze the country by recounting the societal developments that occurred throughout the millennia. By doing so, one begins to understand that Oman did not achieve this peaceful religious theology over the past couple of decades. Oman has an exceptional society that was built out of longtime traditions like a trade-based economy that required foreign interaction, long periods of political sovereignty or autonomy, and a unique theology. The Omani-Ibadi people and their leaders have continuously embraced the ancient roots of their regional and religious traditions to create a contemporary state that espouses a unique society that leads people to live conservative personal lives while exuding outward tolerance. The sect of Islam most Omanis follow, Ibadiyya, is almost entirely unique to Oman with over 2 million of the 2.5 million Ibadis worldwide found in the sultanate.2 This has led many to see the Omani government as the de facto state-representative of Ibadiyya in contemporary times.
