    A Zhong Dir: Zhang Zuo-ji, 1996 A review by Ming-Yeh T. Rawnsley and Gary D. Rawnsley, University of Nottingham, UK The Taiwanese director Zhang Zuo-ji could not generate enough income to make his film A Zhong (Zhong zai). With money to cast only amateurs with little or no acting experience, Zhang decided to use people similar to the characters. Thus the central character, A Zhong, is a trainee in the folk act "Ba Jia Jiang" (Eight Family Generals); the actor cast in the role had also learned and performed the act. A Zhong's mother is an amateur comedy actress who has experience only in street performances; likewise the actress who plays her. The search for A Zhong's younger brother proved the most difficult. As this character is a retarded child, Zhang and his crew visited many special schools. However, since most parents who have children with disabilities in Taiwan are very withdrawn, Zhang was turned away numerous times. But one day he met a particular child at one of the special schools who showed both curiosity and friendliness, and his parents finally agreed to let Zhang cast him in his movie. Consequently A Zhong's brother, A Ji, has become one of the most delightful and unforgettable children in recent Taiwanese cinema. Moreover, Zhang was keen to cultivate the sense of "family" among his cast, and he thus arranged for them to live together for a month before shooting began. Such methods, some deliberate, most forced on the director by the lack of money, turn A Zhong into an extremely convincing and powerful story.

Istoimeni američki film redatelja Roba Marshalla, snimljen je 2005, a kostimografiju potpisuje Collen Atwood, za koju dobiva 2006. godine nagradu Academy Award-a. Pri nastanku kostimografskih skica, samom kreativnom radu prethodi detaljno istraživanje i prikupljanje informacija blisko vezanih za samu tematiku. Prikupljeni podaci, slike, dojmovi i zaključci, formiraju daljnji kreativni tok osmišljavanja kostima. Budući da je tema romana proces školovanja za gejšu i način života i rada gejša u Kyotu u prvoj polovici dvadesetog stoljeća potrebno je ovladati pojmovima vezanim za kulturu življenja i odijevanja gejša. Mapu stoga temeljim na prikupljanju stvarnih podataka o odijevanju gejša i Japanaca općenito u prvoj polovici dvadesetog stoljeća kako bih mogla što bolje vizualizirati opise iz knjige i predočiti svaki važniji lik u djelu i njegov izgled u pojedinim situacijama i mjestima na kojima se u toku radnje nalazi te napraviti usporedbu s viđenim na filmu. Na temelju tog istraživanja i analize karaktera likova iz djela, moguća je gradnja odjevnog oplošja – kostima, u cilju postizanja nadogradnje psihološkog profila. Sous-titreuse fidèle d’Akira Kurosawa et de Shôhei Imamura avec lesquels elle a collaboré étroitement, elle se fait aussi passeuse du cinéma d’aujourd’hui en traduisant notamment les films d’Hayao Miyazaki, d’Hirokazu Kore-eda et de Naomi Kawase. Dans ce riche entretien au ton direct et enlevé, elle évoque sa proximité avec les grandes figures du cinéma japonais et livre sa conception de la traduction cinématographique. Nous avons adopté pour les noms de personnes l’usage occidental (prénom suivi du nom de famille) et non l’usage japonais. Au commencement Avez-vous toujours traduit pour le cinéma ? Non, j’ai d’abord été interprète de conférence. J’adore le passage d’une langue à l’autre. Je traduisais les présidents de la République, mais aussi des ingénieurs et des commerciaux dans les domaines techniques, notamment au sujet du nucléaire car j’étais anti-nucléaire. J’étais très forte en nucléaire. Dans les années 1970-1975, on a fait des procès contre EDF et on les a gagnés, mais EDF n’en a pas tenu compte. C’était révoltant, et j’ai décidé de faire quelque chose à mon petit niveau, auprès des journalistes et décideurs locaux qui venaient en voyage tous frais payés par les électriciens japonais. Ils me disaient : « C’est formidable, le consensus nucléaire en France !» Et je leur répondais : « Non, tout le monde n’est pas pour ! » Je dénonçais vigoureusement le retraitement des combustibles irradiés.
