The Plattsmouth Bridge carries U.S. Highway 34 over the Missouri River between CassCounty, ttebSqska, and Mills C6unty,-structure Iowa. LocatEd inimediately downriver from GeorgeMorisonls fSSOrail- road bridge, the immense consistsof seven-spans:a 402-foot can[levered through mrss over the rive/s navisable channel.anchored bv flankins-20L-foot throueh soans.with two 203-foot and two 104-foot deik trusseson-the eastemilood ptain. The bridse #as c'onstiuctedin 1929 as a toll structure for the PlattsmouthBridge Company, a- privately held dorporation. (Tolls are collected on the bridge presently by the compairy.) rire frfiage was f,esigned, fabricated and erectedby the OmahaSbrrctural Steel Works, for a reportedtotal cost of $639,361.00. With its sharp angularity and somewhatgraceless profile, thl PlattsniouthBridge resembles some of the l.9th centuif, pii-connected trussesover the Missouri River. But its riveted connectionsand modestlv Modeme channel oiers indicatethe relatively late constructiondate. The bridge's2o-foot roadwayividth placesit amon! the narrowestof the extant vehicular tnrssesover the Missouri River. Sinceits completion in December 1929, the PlattsmouthBridge has ca:ried relatively heavytrafEc on this strategicallyimportant inter- state route.

The Plattsmouth Bridse is distinzuishedas one of the oldest extant Missouri River bridqes-ana into Nebraska,e:rceeded ii age by oily the Bridge in Washington County, Oe lvleridianBridge in CedarCounty. It is technologicallysignificarr-t as a notewoithy exampleof canti- leveredtruss constmction:one of three suchtrusses over the Missouriinto the state (the others: the SouthOmaha Bridge (NEHBSNo. DO09:97-1) in DouglasCounty, and the Brownville Bridge (NEHBS No. NH00-85)in NemahaCounty).
