Railway Employee Records for Colorado Volume Iii
RAILWAY EMPLOYEE RECORDS FOR COLORADO VOLUME III By Gerald E. Sherard (2005) When Denver’s Union Station opened in 1881, it saw 88 trains a day during its gold-rush peak. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station regularly saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. Many freight trains also passed through the area. In the early 1900s, there were 2.25 million railroad workers in America. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. The first railroad line to be completed in Colorado was in 1871 and was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line between Denver and Colorado Springs. A question we often hear is: “My father used to work for the railroad. How can I get information on Him?” Most railroad historical societies have no records on employees. Most employment records are owned today by the surviving railroad companies and the Railroad Retirement Board. For example, most such records for the Union Pacific Railroad are in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas salt mines, off limits to all but the lawyers. The Union Pacific currently declines to help with former employee genealogy requests. However, if you are looking for railroad employee records for early Colorado railroads, you may have some success. The Colorado Railroad Museum Library currently has 11,368 employee personnel records. These Colorado employee records are primarily for the following railroads which are not longer operating. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF) Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad employee records of employment are recorded in a bound ledger book (record number 736) and box numbers 766 and 1287 for the years 1883 through 1939 for the joint line from Denver to Pueblo. -

Denver Union Station awarded LEED certification Transit hub awarded green honor for major 2014 renovation DENVER - (July 25, 2016) – Denver Union Station is pleased to announce that it has been awarded LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Denver Union Station has become downtown Denver’s hottest gathering place since it reopened in July 2014 after a $54 million renovation, with a major goal of making the multi-use transportation hub as environmentally friendly as possible. Several local Colorado companies were involved in the historic building’s rejuvenation, including Larimer Associates, McWhinney, REGen, LLC, Sage Hospitality and Urban Neighborhoods. Originally opened in 1891, Denver Union Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Denver Union Station was awarded LEED points for implementing a variety of green initiatives, including: • Development density & community connectivity • Building reuse - more than 90% of the historic building’s existing structural elements were reused, including the original floors, walls & roof • Providing easy access to public transportation, including RTD’s new University of Colorado A Line to Denver International Airport and B Line to Westminster • Diverting more than 50% of construction waste from landfills. • Using low-emitting paints and flooring materials in the renovation • Regionally manufactured materials were used whenever possible • Asbestos contamination in the building was remediated Denver Union Station is home the 112-room luxury independent Crawford Hotel and 12 Colorado restaurants and retailers. She said Senate Bill 146, bringing unemployment offices to regional locations, and Senate Bill 7, allowing the State of Kentucky to forgive taxes on benefits, were both passed. Rep. Banta also discussed the passage of a House Resolution to provide firefighters with access to mental health services and crisis intervention training. -

The bi-state, bi-partisan commitment unveiled by Gov. Steve Beshear of Kentucky and Gov. John Kasich of Ohio includes: Lowering the project’s price tag through innovative solutions in design, construction and financing Splitting costs and toll revenues evenly between Ohio and Kentucky Providing a 50 percent discount in toll rates for frequent commuters The two states’ transportation agencies are working together to develop cost-saving solutions by March 30 and build a viable financial plan before year’s end. The plan is expected to include a public-private partnership to build, maintain and finance the project. The bi-state team will focus on the federally approved 2012 environmental plan for the corridor, which calls for building a new bridge downtown, revamping the existing Brent Spence Bridge and improving interstate approaches in Northern Kentucky and downtown Cincinnati. The current plan would double the number of interstate lanes across the river from eight to 16, relieving congestion that causes major safety, mobility and congestion problems for the region. “We simply cannot afford more delay, distraction and gridlock – on the interstate or in the halls of government,” Gov. -

Oregon rail history was brought alive by the three historic steam locomotives, the 1941 Southern Pacific 4449, the 1938 Spokane, Portland and Seattle 700, and the 1905 Oregon Rail and Navigation 197 which were all on display in their new engine house accompanied on site by two diesel locomotives, a PA-1 and RSD-5, and six heritage passenger cars outside. The 4449 was steamed up with its head poked out the engine house door and gave an occasional toot to the delight of the attendees. The weekend visitors got to view the cabs of both 4449 and 700. A very extensive Lego exhibit included a model of the Portland Customs house as well as Portland Union Station. The Operation Lifesaver trailer was on hand to educate the guests. The kids enjoyed a Chuggington Station play area. Tours were given of three heritage passenger cars including the 1941 SP "James J. Gilmore" parlor/lounge round end observation, the 1954 SP "Gordon Zimmerman" Baggage Car, and the 1950 SP&S Mount Hood Sleeper-Lounge Car. -

During the early stages of plan development, coordination has been undertaken with many individuals and organizations in order to develop an understanding of what are perceived to be important issues that will impact the community and its development and growth in the future. This Community Development Profile summarizes where the community has been, where it is today, and where it may be going in the future based on known data sources. It includes past trend information (historic), current trend information (today), and projections (future), where appropriate and available from existing data sources. Key Community Development Issues Through consultation with the Planning Advisory Team (PAT) and interviews with key persons within the planning area and throughout the county, the important issues that could potentially impact the community in terms of social and economic conditions were identified. Interstate 73 FEIS: I-95 to North Carolina The feasibility study recognized that there had been some improvements to roads in the project study area; however, the improved roads were predicted to have capacity problems along some segments by the year 2025, based on traffic modeling. Future traffic projections indicated that I-73 would divert traffic from existing roadways, which would improve capacity and reduce traffic congestion.10 North Carolina completed a feasibility study in 2005 that evaluated alternatives for the proposed I 74 in Columbus and Brunswick Counties, North Carolina, located in the southeastern portion of the state. The study was an initial step in the planning and design and described the project, costs, and identified potential problems that required consideration. The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) was passed by Congress and signed into law on August 10, 2005. SAFETEA-LU acknowledges the prior purpose for, and designation of, I-73 as a High Priority Corridor, along with designating it as a project of “national and regional significance” (23 U.S.C. §101(2005)). In addition, SAFETEA-LU provides earmarks for the I-73 project in South Carolina. At the state level, Concurrent Resolution H 3320 passed by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2003 states “that the members of the General Assembly express their collective belief and desire that the Department of Transportation should consider its next interstate project as one that provides the Pee Dee Region with access to the interstate system.”11 Both Congress and the South Carolina General Assembly have appropriated money to SCDOT to study the potential corridor for the proposed I-73.
