More lively and entertaining than a John Green novel!By ETsaysIts chapters are short but intensely engaging, not just about teenage angst or high fashion, there are amusing anecdotal side stories (shopping tactics, glimpses of the lifestyles of the decadent and indulgent in Manhattan and the Hamptons) for a wider audience. The content is well researched, substantive without being overly obsessive. Movie buffs will enjoy the rare nuggets of Audrey Hepburn history; mothers can relate to "Argumageddon" conflicts and ignored texts with daughters; romance readers will get brief, titillating doses of relationship trysts and of course, fashionistas get their fittings of designer names.Writing language is contemporary, sometimes salty but necessary to keep to its storyline. I don't agree with the earlier review of suspension of disbelief; the plots and subplots are credible; precedents are mentioned. I had trouble with the names of the characters - "Tabitha" may be an upper crust English name but it conjures an image of a regal cat, not a pop princess and the last "Dahlia" I heard of was a tragic victim, not an evil supervillain. The author's work in "Clarissa" entertained and raised an entire generation of millennials. Given the depth, originality of his first book, I am surprised it hasn't received more buzz.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining!By Lili J. McgovernWonderful story that made me watch Breakfast at Tiffany's and a whole host of other Hepburn classics. Entertaining and well-written.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy TerriMy granddaughter enjoyed this book In Being Audrey Hepburn, Clarissa Explains It All-creator, Mitchell Kriegman, tells the story of a 19-year-old girl from Jersey who finds herself thrust into the world of socialites after being seen in Audrey Hepburn's dress from the film Breakfast at Tiffany's.Lisbeth comes from a broken home in the land of tube tops, heavy eyeliner, frosted lip- gloss, juiceheads, hoop earrings and "the shore." She has a circle of friends who have dedicated their teenage lives to relieve the world of all its alcohol one drink at a time.Obsessed with everything Audrey Hepburn, Lisbeth is transformed when she secretly tries on Audrey's iconic Givenchy. She becomes who she wants to be by pretending to be somebody she's not and living among the young and privileged Manhattan elite. Soon she's faced with choices that she would never imagine making – between who she's become and who she once was.In the tradition of The Nanny Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, this is a coming of age story that all begins with that little black dress… From School Library JournalGr 8 Up—Lisbeth is a 19-year-old Jersey girl who feels trapped. With a troubled home life, the teen spends her days working at a rundown diner (The Hole) with her best friend, Jess, and her crush, Jake. While Jess and Jake have ambitions that will get them out of The Hole, the only thing Lisbeth knows is that she isn't interested in becoming a nurse practitioner, like her mom plans for her. The protagonist's only real interests are Audrey Hepburn, gossip magazines, and Page Six party photos. While helping Jess at her second job, as an intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lisbeth gets a chance to try on the original Breakfast at Tiffany's dress made for Hepburn. The dress leads her on a journey that she could have never imagined. While the teen is relatable and likable, despite being incredibly superficial, the other characters are drawn with broad strokes that border on stereotypes. Kriegman treats underage drinking and driving while intoxicated lightly, and ignores the existence of IP addresses and hungry paparazzi. Teens that loved Cecily von Ziegesar's "Gossip Girl" series (Little, Brown) will be able to overlook these flaws, and will love to live vicariously through Lisbeth.—Amanda Augsburger, Moline Public Library, IL “Best of all, Kriegman's women...feel real and full of unexpected dimensions.” ?Santa Barbara Independent“A fun read sure to cure you of the mean reds.” ?Rare Audrey Hepburn.com“A fun, girly read [with] depth and intensity...Highly recommend.” ?I'd So Rather Be Reading.com“It moves along as easily as Fred Astaire on a ballroom floor…If you're looking for a novel that will hold your attention from page one, this is for you, no matter what your age.” ?EverBeautiful.com“Teens...will love to live vicariously through Lisbeth.” ?School Library Journal“Ideal for Audrey fans or anyone who wants to escape the mundane.” ?Kirkus s“First-time novelist Kriegman (creator of Clarissa Explains It All) hits all the right notes for breezy escapist fiction.” ?Publishers Weekly“This is a fun romp: witty writing, passion and fashion, and oodles of Audrey. A perfect cure for the mean reds.” ?Booklist“For anyone who believes in the magical powers of the perfect dress, this is the book for you! Kriegman has created a delightful, mystical escape where readers can easily slip into the dress (and matching shoes!) of Manhattan's most elite. With a narrative voice fit for lovers of young adult and new adult fiction, and a fresh fun take on the beloved mistaken identity trope, Being Audrey Hepburn is sure to please a wide range of readers.” ?Julie Cross, international bestselling author of TempestAbout the AuthorMITCHELL KRIEGMAN has been published in The New Yorker, The National Lampoon, New York Press, Glamour, and Harper's Bazaar. A winner of four Emmy Awards and a Directors Guild Award, he was also a writer for Saturday Night Live. Kriegman was the creator of the classic groundbreaking television series Clarissa Explains It All, as well as the executive head writer on Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, and Doug. • Humor/Comedy
VIDEO/TV: HUMOR/COMEDY Introduction to the Catalogue for the Exhibition By John Minkowsky, curator The touring exhibition VIDEO/TV: HUMOR/COMEDY was conceived in early 1980 as a means of exploring the recent renaissance of experimental comedy in the visual and performing arts and in the entertainment industry. It was to consider the ways in which this renewed interest in innovative approaches to humor had begun to blur traditional distinctions between the otherwise exclusive domains of Art and Entertainment; which distinctions might still be maintained as useful critical tools and which could be discarded as surplus baggage; some of the circumstances that helped to foster this new breed of crossovers afforded by the employment of comedy; and what all of this might portend for the futures of Art and Entertainment alike. The introduction in the late 1960s of portable, low-cost television equipment engendered the rise of video as a new art medium. And the birth of video art more or less coincided with that of other modes of artistic expression – such as Performance – which were themselves part of a vaster and more profound upheaval within and redefinition of contemporary art. A number of younger artists, for reasons which ranged from mere curiosity and the desire to extend their ideas into temporal forms, to strong convictions about the relationship of art to commerce and the role of the artist in society, embraced these new modes of expression and media, and the new approaches, techniques and conceptual strategies toward the act of art making they seemed both to suggest and demand.
