Nearly two weeks early, on March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. From that single beginning, Ferguson’s life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. Four identical Fergusons made of the same DNA, four boys who are the same boy, go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. Family fortunes diverge. Athletic skills and sex lives and friendships and intellectual passions contrast. Each Henry Holt Ferguson falls under the spell of the magnificent Amy January 31st 2017 Schneiderman, yet each Amy and each Ferguson have a relationship like no other. Meanwhile, readers will take in each Ferguson’s pleasures and ache from each Ferguson’s pains, as the mortal plot of each Ferguson’s life rushes on. As inventive and dexterously constructed as anything Paul Auster has ever written, yet with a passion for realism and a great tenderness and fierce attachment to history and to life itself that readers have never seen from Auster before. 4 3 2 1 is a marvelous and unforgettably affecting tour de force. ENZO FERARRI: THE MAN, THE CARS, THE RACES, THE MACHINE–Brock Yates Brock Yates’ 1991 biography of Italian auto titan, Enzo Ferarri will be updated and published as a movie tie in to coincide with the upcoming movie directed by Michael Mann. To his legion of admirers, Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988) was a genius who personally created marvelous cars of advanced design. But as Car and Driver columnist Yates points out in this captivating, demythologizing biography, none of Ferrari's racing cars "was a glittering example of daring technology," and he had almost no hand in the Random House U.S. making of the later road cars that bore his name. Penguin UK 2 Revealed as a hot-tempered megalomaniac given to loud 2018 belching and countless amorous conquests, Ferrari fathered an illegitimate child and led a shadowy second Rights sold: life as a respite from the "simmering hatred" of his marriage. He portrayed himself as a loyal "motorized Chinese knight-errant," defending Italy's national honor, but in Italian Yates's esimate he was interested solely in winning races Czech and sometimes pushed his drivers to dangerous extremes. Danish Yates deftly records the carnage of major races, business Ukrainian wheeling and dealing, and the political dimensions of motor racing from the pre-WW II Rome-Berlin Axis to today's ribbon-waving nationalism. Photos. IMPERFECT SOLO—Steven Sidley This is a literary novel set in California about Meyer, a middle-aged man adrift in anxiety, ill-fortune and comic mishap, caught in the netherworld between the reckless optimism of youth and the resignation of age and buffeted by the existential and prosaic concerns that modern life in Los Angeles inflicts. At once funny, intellectually probing, and poignant, Imperfect Solo follows the flailing and hapless Meyer as he seeks hope and redemption while his world unravels around him. Steven Sidley has won and been shortlisted for South African and French literary awards and this novel caused a sensation when published in France earlier this year: Elle wrote “if you Skyhorse like Philip Roth you’ll love Steven Sidley.” Fall 2017 Steven Sidley’s next novel, MICROPHONE, has so far Audio: CMA sold in France and South Africa. Rights sold: The protagonist, Max Lurie, is a provocative podcaster UK living in Los Angeles; his navel-gazing and often France shocking podcasts about his life have become a runaway South Africa success. But his embellishments and inventions have started to leak into his real life. As Max tries to navigate the gray areas between fact and fiction, things begin to spin out of control. • Affect, Embodiment, and Ethics in Narratives of Sexual Abuse
Affect, Embodiment, and Ethics in Narratives of Sexual Abuse Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lindsay A. Martin, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: James Phelan, Advisor Robyn Warhol, Co-Advisor Brian McHale Copyright by Lindsay A. Martin 2016 Abstract In the field of rhetorical narrative theory, the study of affect has been oft- acknowledged but remains undervalued. Even as affect studies has burgeoned in other fields, affect in narrative theory continues to be discussed either as a product of ethical judgments or as a purely physical response that scientific studies can measure. Affect, Embodiment, and Ethics in Narratives of Sexual Abuse expands the vocabulary for affect in narrative theory, in particular focusing on expanding our awareness of the varying potential relationships between ethical judgments and affective dynamics. Turning to narratives that represent sexual abuse and taboo violation in late-twentieth-century American literature—Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, Kathryn Harrison’s memoir The Kiss, and Alexander Chee’s Edinburgh—I demonstrate that affective dynamics have a variety of possible relationships with the negative ethical judgments encouraged against the abuser figures and/or taboo violators. Specifically, I argue that in order to attend to affect as it appears in narratives of sexual abuse, we must attend to “embodiment”: the character’s shifting experiences of how closely tied he or she feels mind and body to be. I call this experiential embodiment and chart it by examining representation of characters’ emotions, trauma, and bodily experience.

More lively and entertaining than a John Green novel!By ETsaysIts chapters are short but intensely engaging, not just about teenage angst or high fashion, there are amusing anecdotal side stories (shopping tactics, glimpses of the lifestyles of the decadent and indulgent in Manhattan and the Hamptons) for a wider audience. The content is well researched, substantive without being overly obsessive. Movie buffs will enjoy the rare nuggets of Audrey Hepburn history; mothers can relate to "Argumageddon" conflicts and ignored texts with daughters; romance readers will get brief, titillating doses of relationship trysts and of course, fashionistas get their fittings of designer names.Writing language is contemporary, sometimes salty but necessary to keep to its storyline. I don't agree with the earlier review of suspension of disbelief; the plots and subplots are credible; precedents are mentioned. I had trouble with the names of the characters - "Tabitha" may be an upper crust English name but it conjures an image of a regal cat, not a pop princess and the last "Dahlia" I heard of was a tragic victim, not an evil supervillain. The author's work in "Clarissa" entertained and raised an entire generation of millennials.

  • Law, Literature & the Problem with Memoirs
RUTGERS LAW RECORD Volume 31 Spring 2007 Number 1 TRUTHINESS: LAW, LITERATURE & THE PROBLEM WITH MEMOIRS By Jessica Lewis* I. INTRODUCTION Truthiness is “the quality of adhering to concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.”1 Comedian Stephen Colbert introduced the term on October 17, 2005, during the inaugural episode of The Colbert Report, itself a blurring of news and satire. As the inception of truthiness coincided with the scandal surrounding James Frey’s so-called memoir, A Million Little Pieces,2 the term has previously been applied to the issues addressed herein.3 In this Note, I explore the legal and literary impact of James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, analyzing memoir through the lens of truthiness. First, I sketch a brief literary history of autobiography and memoir, from the genre’s first examples through its most recent developments. Second, I consider the role of the law in literary realms, examining lawsuits involving autobiographies and/or memoirs. Third, I analyze the James Frey debacle, highlighting the circumstances that culminated in the first customer refund issued by a * J.D. Candidate, May 2007, Rutgers University School of Law – Newark. 1 See http://www.americandialect.org/Words_of_the_Year_2005.pdf; see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truthiness. 2 JAMES FREY, A MILLION LITTLE PIECES (Anchor Books/Random House, Inc. 2003)(hereinafter “AMLP”). 3 See, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truthiness (noting that Oprah Winfrey mentioned truthiness in her second segment with James Frey, following the revelation that his memoir was fictionalized). 1 publisher for factual inaccuracies in a memoir.

John Leverence A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY -June 1974 Approved by Doctoral Committee (/3. Advisor Department of English Graduate School Representative &-S-7} Janus ia£\^ BOWLING GREEK STATE UNWERSiW LIBRARY il ABSTRACT Having served as a newspaperman, a foreign correspondent during World War II, a major participant in the famous "Why We Fight Series" for the Army Signal Corps, a magazine writer, a studio contract writer, and a novelist, Irving Wallace's career is a number of careers in amal gam. During any stage of his life as a professional writer he could be considered a paradigm by which one could learn of the problems and pos sibilities of that area of professional writing. How he achieved his position as one of the world's most successful writers is a remarkable story, not only of Irving Wallace, but of the structures of success and failure in the day-to-day world of American commercial writers. In late January, 1973, Irving Wallace began depositing manuscripts, letters and ephemera in the archives of The Center For The Study of Popular Culture, Bowling Green University. This study is based upon those materials and further information provided this researcher by Mr. Wallace. This study concluded that the novels of Irving Wallace are the matic and structural extensions of his careers in journalism and film writing. The craft and discipline of journalism and film writing served him well in his apprenticeship as a writer, but were finally restrictive to him because of their commercial nature.
