Martin 2016 Abstract In the field of rhetorical narrative theory, the study of affect has been oft- acknowledged but remains undervalued. Even as affect studies has burgeoned in other fields, affect in narrative theory continues to be discussed either as a product of ethical judgments or as a purely physical response that scientific studies can measure. Affect, Embodiment, and Ethics in Narratives of Sexual Abuse expands the vocabulary for affect in narrative theory, in particular focusing on expanding our awareness of the varying potential relationships between ethical judgments and affective dynamics. Turning to narratives that represent sexual abuse and taboo violation in late-twentieth-century American literature—Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, Kathryn Harrison’s memoir The Kiss, and Alexander Chee’s Edinburgh—I demonstrate that affective dynamics have a variety of possible relationships with the negative ethical judgments encouraged against the abuser figures and/or taboo violators. Specifically, I argue that in order to attend to affect as it appears in narratives of sexual abuse, we must attend to “embodiment”: the character’s shifting experiences of how closely tied he or she feels mind and body to be. I call this experiential embodiment and chart it by examining representation of characters’ emotions, trauma, and bodily experience. -

More lively and entertaining than a John Green novel!By ETsaysIts chapters are short but intensely engaging,not just about teenage angst or high fashion, there are amusing anecdotal side stories (shopping tactics, glimpses of the lifestyles of the decadent and indulgent in Manhattan and the Hamptons) for a wider audience. The content is well researched, substantive without being overly obsessive. Movie buffs will enjoy the rare nuggets of Audrey Hepburn history; mothers can relate to "Argumageddon" conflicts and ignored texts with daughters; romance readers will get brief, titillating doses of relationship trysts and of course, fashionistas get their fittings of designer names.Writing language is contemporary, sometimes salty but necessary to keep to its storyline. I don't agree with the earlier review of suspension of disbelief; the plots and subplots are credible; precedents are mentioned. I had trouble with the names of the characters - "Tabitha" may be an upper crust English name but it conjures an image of a regal cat, not a pop princess and the last "Dahlia" I heard of was a tragic victim, not an evil supervillain.The author's work in "Clarissa" entertained and raised an entire generation of millennials. -

This project also received the J. Anthony Lukas Prize for a Work in Progress, administered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Born in Clearwater, Florida, Laura Claridge received her Ph.D. in British Romanticism and Literary Theory from the University of Mary- land in 1986. She taught in the English departments at Converse and Wofford colleges in Spartanburg, SC, and was a tenured professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis until 1997. She has been a frequent writer and reviewer for the national press, appearing in such newspapers and magazines as The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and the Christian Science Monitor. Her books have been translated into Spanish, German, and Polish. She has appeared frequently in the national media, including NBC, CNN, BBC, CSPAN, and NPR and such widely watched programs as the Today Show. Laura Claridge’s biography of iconic publisher Blanche Knopf, The Lady with the Borzoi, will be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in April, 2016. -

RUTGERS LAW RECORD Volume 31 Spring 2007 Number 1 TRUTHINESS: LAW, LITERATURE & THE PROBLEM WITH MEMOIRS By Jessica Lewis* I. INTRODUCTION Truthiness is “the quality of adhering to concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.”1 Comedian Stephen Colbert introduced the term on October 17, 2005, during the inaugural episode of The Colbert Report, itself a blurring of news and satire. As the inception of truthiness coincided with the scandal surrounding James Frey’s so-called memoir, A Million Little Pieces,2 the term has previously been applied to the issues addressed herein.3 In this Note, I explore the legal and literary impact of James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, analyzing memoir through the lens of truthiness. First, I sketch a brief literary history of autobiography and memoir, from the genre’s first examples through its most recent developments. Second, I consider the role of the law in literary realms, examining lawsuits involving autobiographies and/or memoirs. Third, I analyze the James Frey debacle, highlighting the circumstances that culminated in the first customer refund issued by a * J.D. During any stage of his life as a professional writer he could be considered a paradigm by which one could learn of the problems and pos sibilities of that area of professional writing. How he achieved his position as one of the world's most successful writers is a remarkable story, not only of Irving Wallace, but of the structures of success and failure in the day-to-day world of American commercial writers. In late January, 1973, Irving Wallace began depositing manuscripts, letters and ephemera in the archives of The Center For The Study of Popular Culture, Bowling Green University. This study is based upon those materials and further information provided this researcher by Mr. Wallace. This study concluded that the novels of Irving Wallace are the matic and structural extensions of his careers in journalism and film writing. The craft and discipline of journalism and film writing served him well in his apprenticeship as a writer, but were finally restrictive to him because of their commercial nature. -

THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION OF ARTS AND SCIENCES PRESENTS THE 30TH ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS IN 42 CATEGORIES New York, NY – May 10, 2003 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented the 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards for the creative arts on Saturday, May 10, 2003 in 42 categories during simultaneous black-tie ceremonies held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City and the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Los Angeles. A stellar line-up of Daytime celebrities including Susan Lucci, Kim Zimmer, Meredith Vieira and Lesli Kay presented the awards to a distinguished group of creative arts professionals at the Marriott Marquis hotel in New York City. Emeril Lagasse hosted the event. In Los Angeles, a star-studded line-up of celebrities including Bob Barker, Melody Thomas Scott, Tony Geary and Lisa Rinna presented the awards. Todd Newton hosted the event. Awards were presented in such categories as: Directing in a Talk Show; Casting Director for a Drama Series; Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design; Writing in a Children’s series; Costume Design/Styling; Multiple Camera Editing; Music Direction and Composition; Direction in a Children’s Special. Emmy Awards are presented to daytime television programs that are broadcast nationally between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. The eligibility period for this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards was January 1, 2002 – December 31, 2002. Daytime Emmy Awards in 19 additional categories, primarily for performances and programs, including the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, May 16 (8-11 PM ET/PT) and aired on ABC. -
