Agenda Item GNLRT ADVISORY COMMITTEE th 4 April 2006 REPORT OF THE HEAD OF TRANSPORT PROJECTS NET LINE ONE - OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE: NOVEMBER 2005 - FEBRUARY 2006 1. PURPOSE OF REPORT To inform the Committee of the performance of NET Line One over the period November 2005 to the end of February 2006. 2. RECOMMENDATION It is RECOMMENDED that the Committee notes this report. 3. SYSTEM PERFORMANCE 3.1 During the four month period from November to the end of February average monthly reliability and punctuality of tram services remained high with, on average, only 0.75% of trips having to be cancelled and 1.6% of trips running late. The proportion of late trips did however increase slightly in the run-up to Christmas, mainly as a result of heavy traffic causing some trips to be delayed. This was made worse on some days by a lack of availability of trams due to certain vehicles suffering damage from vandalism or minor road traffic accidents and others undergoing servicing. 3.2 There was a continued overall increase in patronage over the period. The most recent patronage estimates indicate that at least 9.7 million trips will have been made on the system during the second full year of operations (March 2005 – March 2006). This compares to 8.4 million in the first year. Further boarding and alighting surveys were undertaken during March to obtain further details about how people use the system. 3.3 Mobility surveys were carried out in February in order to assess system usage by those with mobility difficulties. The results of the surveys are expected to be available shortly. 3.4 Park and ride continues to be popular with Phoenix Park, Hucknall and The Forest being full or close to capacity on most days. Reported car crime remains relatively low and, following a slight rise in November, the number of incidents fell back again in December, January and February. 3.5 All trams have now been fitted with on-board CCTV. st 3.6 A change to some NET fares is due to be introduced from 1 April. This will see the introduction of an increased single adult fare during the morning peak period (before 9.30am) from £1.20 to £2.00. The principle reason for this change is to deter fare avoidance at these busy times, when some passengers are known to try to chance their luck by avoiding the conductor and, when approached, will only purchase a single ticket. Outside of this time and at weekends the adult single fare will remain unchanged. The City Centre Single ticket (currently £1.00 for travel between Royal Centre and Station Street) is to be withdrawn. There will be no change to the cost of an all-day (£2.20) or an all week (£10) ticket, which account for the majority of tickets sold. Child fares will also be affected with the cost of a single ticket increasing to £1 (currently 80p). All-day child tickets are to be withdrawn, in line with Nottingham City Transport fares, however group tickets will now allow up to four under 16s (previously three) to travel with one or two adults. The trams will be replaced by a bus service on this day, operating at half hourly intervals from Hucknall and Phoenix Park and at 15 minute intervals along the core section of the route. Information regarding the shutdown and replacement bus service will be made available to the public at least seven days prior to the event. 3.8 The footbridge adjacent to the level crossing and tramstop at David Lane, which has been out of use for safety reasons since 2004, is due to be removed for refurbishment by Network Rail on the day of the tram shutdown. The work is expected to be completed and the bridge re- opened during the summer.
