The current thinking is that Sodbury Library is to remain open as a Community Library with Open Plus access. This means that it will be open 9am-8pm 7 days a week (pending negotiation with the Town Lands Charity). However it will not be staffed. It will be up to a group like the Friends of Chipping Sodbury Library to provide volunteers if it should choose to do so. Open Plus is a card and pin system which allows access to the library, and taking books out will be done through an automated system. South Council will be paying the rent, electricity and heating as well as using the Section 106 money from the Barnhill development to fund the Open Plus system. Books and IT equipment will be provided by the Council. This is still subject to a Council meeting and further consultation. Yet another compound has appeared behind Chapel Lane for the workers on the railway. This is for re-routing the River Frome over the railway on a new aqueduct. It would be nice if Network Rail made some gesture towards the village to compensate for all the noise and upheavals. How about a contribution to the Village Hall; perhaps Sodbury Town Council could explore this further.

Congratulations to Catherine Bennett and Mark Benn who were married on 20th August at Old Sodbury Church. Catherine, spent her child- hood living in Cotswold Lane, went to the Primary School and Chipping Sodbury School and is now a primary school teacher. Mark teaches Design and Technology. As Mrs Benn, Catherine has cleverly just shortened her surname. They are now living in Wiltshire.

Welcome to the Carpenter Family who have moved into Chapel Lane. They write. 'We are David, Kelly, Noah, age 5 and Isla Carpenter, 19 months. We have moved from Chip- ping Sodbury and are very much looking forward to being part of the Old Sodbury Village community. We thank everyone for the warmest welcome we have received. We've met a few of the neighbours now and everyone seems really lovely and friendly. We can't wait for all the essential work to be finished at the house so we can move in properly and be a part of Old Sodbury village.’

A quick introduction to the latest newcomers to Church Lane—Julia and Andy Sage: ‘We have recently moved the short distance to Old Sodbury from Horton where we have lived for the last two years. We are looking forward to exploring the local footpaths with our Collie dog, Zak, and also enjoying the odd pint at The Dog. We hope to meet many of you over the coming months. Thank you for the warm welcome.' PAGE 2 OLD SODBURY TIMES ISSUE 60

Sunset at Camers – and All That Jazz!! On a warm, calm evening The Frampton Footwarmers performed to a full capacity audience armed with picnic hampers, chairs and blankets assembled on the lovely lawns of Camers garden. Feet and chicken drumsticks tapped to the delightful Dixieland sound and many of the audience joined in with the smooth tones of Alan Spedding leading the band in a repertoire of well known songs and melodies. As dusk fell, we were all treated to the glow of a wonderful sunset which was a fitting end to a great evening. The Denman family continues to sponsor the use of their gardens as a venue for an annual picnic with entertainment; and we thank them for providing such a beautiful setting. We raised more than £1800 towards the fabric fund and thank everyone who attended in support of the Friends of Old Sodbury Church

Your New Old Sodbury Councillor—Matthew Lewis Tel: 01454 319818 or 0749 887 6960 Dear Readers, I would like to start by introducing myself. I am 22 years old from Chipping Sodbury. I have lived in Sodbury all my life, was educated and started work here. Recently, I have been working hard to serve my community. I was a member of the and Sodbury Air Training Corps Squadron and am soon to become a member of their civil committee. I recently joined the Friends of Sodbury Library group. I make regular trips to Old Sodbury, I love the mannerism of the strangers passed, I love the historic values and of course, the outstanding beauty. I am honoured to sit on Sodbury Town Council and represent the village. I also want to make this clear, I will put all my effort into keeping Old Sodbury the fantastic village it is today, and will make decisions in the interest of the residents. I encourage all those with any questions or concerns to contact me, I will be more than happy to help. Thank you.

Bike Ride Carmarthen to Old Sodbury 15-17 July This year 19 men of various ages cycled for fun, not for charity as this is done every 2 years. Day 1 Carmarthen to The Mumbles -easy ride of 42 miles but rain most of the day. Then a change of clothes in the hotel and an enjoyable night on the town. Day 2 The Mumbles to Thornhill Cardiff - hardest day of 56 miles though the first 16 were easy enough. Then a wooded cycle path up into the Brecon Beacons. Rain, low cloud plus difficult

conditions meant we missed the planned pub lunch and pushed on to the hotel. After the trials of the day it was more like a stately home. Then an early night for some! Day 3 Cardiff to Old Sodbury –a much flatter ride of 52 miles in the sun. At Newport we crossed the Transporter Bridge and on to our lunch stop near Chepstow, but punctures delayed lunch till 2pm. More punctures before the Severn Bridge caused the support vehicle to go back across the bridge twice to deal with them. We arrived 2 hours late to a welcoming crowd and plenty of refreshments, kindly supplied by the ladies with the support of John Edgar. ISSUE 60 OLD SODBURY TIMES PAGE 3

As we head into early Autumn we can reflect on a very successful OLD SODBURY W.I. year to date for Old Sodbury WI. Our July meeting speaker was Liz who, with her daughter Hope, provided us with an inspirational talk on the work of the Multiple Sclerosis Trust. We very much enjoyed the village celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday. A visit to Aunt Martha's Tearooms in Drybrook, Gloucestershire, proved to be very popular and once we had enjoyed our cream and scones we were entertained by "Old Ned" with his ramblings about life as a gardener up at "the big house". A visit to Hobbs House Bakery was also extremely popular with members and guests totalling at least thirty. This was followed by a Ploughman's Supper. Our speakers over the next couple of months include Marnie Rees who will talk about Chipping Sodbury Quarry, and Penny Smith from the Great Western Air Ambulance. Our AGM is in November and our Xmas party in December will complete 2016. If you would like more information on our very friendly group please contact Elaine on 01454 327803.

Rachel Derrick and Nikki Waterlow met 4 years ago when Rachel moved to Old Sodbury. A mutual love of sewing turned into a business when together they formed The Sodbury Sewing School. They have now taught well over 400 lovely people to sew since our launch. Their classes are fun and relaxed, full of gossip and giggles. Running them from their homes gives their sewers a personal touch that often leads to new friendships and a firm love of sewing. Their classes include quilting, dressmaking, projects for the home, projects for the kids and lots of fun one-off makes just for a laugh! They have a wide range of customers with varied skill levels and interests, but all are made to feel equally welcome and encouraged to find their own ‘sewing style’. They like to keep things simple, take the pressure off and help remind people that sewing should be fun!!! They would both like to thank the people of Old Sodbury for the continued encouragement and support of their flourishing business. Contact: [email protected]
