In this essay, I have attempted to show through primary Syriac Christian texts, that there was both a medical school and a bimarestan in Gondeshapur in pre-Islamic Sassanid era, and that Galenic medical texts had been translated and taught in that institution.     Adam Izdebski C racow CULTURAL CONTACTS BETWEEN THE SUPERPOWERS OF LATE ANTIQUITY: THE SYRIAC SCHOOL OF NISIBIS AND THE TRANSMISSION OF GREEK EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE TO THE PERSIAN EMPIRE Introduction Any scholar of antiquity who reads that most famous of texts created within the late antique East Syriac School of Nisibis – its Statutes, or literally, the Canons – is struck by the similarity of its institutions1 to those of a Graeco-Roman philosophical community. This initially surprising analogy, together with the grand scale of the school’s educa- tional project – providing students with intellectual skills ranging from basic literacy to Aristotelian logic and, fi nally, enabling them to interpret the Scriptures within the East Syriac exegetical tradition – has led many scholars to call this school the ‘fi rst university of Christianity’, or even simply the ‘fi rst university’.2 Although such seemingly anach- ronistic qualifi cations may not do justice to the School’s actual character and wider sig- nifi cance, it remains true that we can demonstrate substantial parallels in a scholarly community’s organisation and self-defi nition between the School of Nisibis and other educational centres that existed in the Graeco-Roman Mediterranean during the same period. In modern scholarship, there is a long tradition devoted to this fascinating con- nection. Recently, in the concluding pages of his monograph on the School of Nisibis, Adam Becker suggested that one may consider the parallels between the Nisibis com- munity and the late antique philosophical schools to be of a very general character, and cannot be attributed to any real contact or infl uence.3 However, as this paper will attempt to demonstrate, there exists suffi cient evidence to reconstruct at least some routes of communication through which Greek ideas would have reached late antique Mesopotamia and contributed to the development of the School’s organisation and self-defi nition.

John’s purpose is to explain God’s dispensation in human history. He offers theological instruction through the medium of historical narrative. Chapter one discusses John’s political and ecclesiastical context. The fifteenth book of Resh Melle illustrates historical events which were contemporary to John. This chapter also discusses the rise of Islam, which had a great impact on the monastic centres and the numerous communities that formed the Church of the East. Chapter two investigates the life, literary works, and importance of the author. The works that have been traditionally attributed to John are discussed and their authenticity assessed. The chapter also discusses John’s importance for modern scholarship in various fields of study, including history, theology, exegesis, liturgy, and asceticism.     Shai Secunda Martin Buber Society of Fellows Response to Geoffrey Herman’s Review of The Iranian Talmud In the most recent issue of the AJS Review (39.1; 2015, pp. 171-173), Geoffrey Herman has penned a critical review of my book The Iranian Talmud: Reading the Bavli in its Sasanian Context (Philadelphia, 2014). It is actually difficult to call this piece of writing a review, as it is either unwilling or incapable of grappling with the book’s larger argument and theoretical program; these are seen as illegitimate due to supposedly problematic readings. In a forthcoming article I criticize the widespread misconception which is present in this review and in other work in the field that philology constitutes a pre-theoretical science on which “Theory” is built. For example, recent philologically- based critiques of Irano-talmudica miss the point that much of the recent contextual approach to the Bavli is based not on weak philology but critical axioms that differ from traditional, often-positivistic Talmud philology. For the present, since this review contains a number of errors and mis-readings of its own, I have decided to take the opportunity to respond in this unofficial format. 1. According to the review, the “earlier chapters attempt to construct a Zoroastrian scholarly culture that parallels Babylonian rabbinic culture.” In fact, the second chapter (the only chapter discussed in the review) attempts to situate potential exchanges of knowledge between Babylonian rabbis and other Sasanian peoples, though with a particular interest in Zoroastrian encounters. Herman is troubled by my invocation of incantation bowls – described in his words as “a popular, local, and contemporary literary genre” – which he deems irrelevant to the discussion.

Eccl. II; ed. Abbeloos and Lamy, 1872, cols. 97-98), and was well versed in ecclesiastical and philosophical matters. Having once aspired to be the metropolitan bishop of Persis, he later converted to Zoroastrianism. Paul’s apostasy is described in a similar manner in the Arabic Chronicle of Séert (XXIV; ed. Scher, 1911, p. 147), but Teixidor (1996, p. 509, n. 1) has questioned the historical value of these reports. Bar Hebraeus attributes to Paul “an admirable introduction to the dialectics (of Aristotle).” It is generally agreed that this is identical with the Treatise on the Logic of Aristotle the Philosopher addressed to King Ḵosrow (i.e., Ḵosrow I Anuširvān, r. 531-79), which is extant in a Syriac manuscript in the British Museum (ms. 988 [Add. 14660], foll. 55ᵛ-67ʳ; Wright, 1872, p. 1161). An edition and Latin translation of the Treatise were published by Land (1875). The Treatise contains an introduction to philosophy in general, an introduction to Aristotle’s logical works (dependent upon Porphyry’s Isagoge), and concise summaries of the individual books of the Organon studied in the Syrian school tradition (Categoriae; De interpretatione; Analytica priora 1.1-7). The first half of the Treatise has been translated into French by Teixidor (1992, pp. 129-32; 1998b). Meskawayh (d. 1030), in his Tartib al-saʿādāt, quotes from an otherwise unknown work of Paul addressed to Ḵosrow which provides a general introduction to the philosophy of Aristotle (Pines, 1971, pp.
