Ve saire: vs. Yayınları: Yay. iii ÖNSÖZ İki toplumun karşılaşmasının sonuçları sadece bir şeye indirgenemez yahut bir toplumun dini inançlarını değiştirmesi, yalnızca bir sebeple izah edilemez. Tarihte yaşanmış olayları tek neden etrafında düşünmek doğru bir metod değildir. Bu açıdan Arap-Fars karşılaşmasını yeni baştan ele almanın ve tarih tenkit metotlarını kullanarak anlamaya çalışmanın gerekli olduğunu düşündük. Bu bağlamda Kelam ilminin doğuş nedenleri arasında gösterilen “farklı kültürlerle karşılaşma” meselesini, İran özelinde inceledik. Araştırmamıza İran tarihi ve kültürü hakkında bilgi vererek başladık. Birinci bölümde İran’ın İslamlaşma sürecini ele aldık. İran’ın İslamlaşmasını, Müslüman geleneği yüceltmek için “hoşgörü” bağlamında değerlendirmek yerine tarih kaynaklarında verilen bilgileri objektif olarak değerlendirdik. İslamlaşma süreci ile ilgili bilgi veren kaynakların çoğu Arapçaydı. Bu nedenle Arapça kaleme alınmış tarih eserlerinden birinci bölümde daha çok yararlandık. İkinci bölümde ise Kelam ilminin teşekkülü ile İran’ın İslamlaşma sürecini paralel bir biçimde okuduk. Zerdüştî klasiklerini Pehlevice, Farsça ve İngilizce olarak temin ettik ve karşılaştırmalı bir biçimde okuma yaptık. Zaman zaman incelediğimiz Farsça ve İngilizce tercümelerde çelişkiler gördüğümüz

    Sa’di’s Rose Garden: a Paean to Reconciliation ‘An Exploration of Socio-Political Relations, Human Interactions, Integration, Peace and Harmony’ Mohamad Ahmadian Cherkawani (Iman) Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations Department of Politics School of Geography, Politics, Sociology 01/2018 i ii Abstract The core purpose of this PhD has been to investigate the reconciliatory thought of a 13th century Persian poet named Sa’di Shirazi. Although Sa’di’s prose poetry is not set out in the systematic form of a comprehensive political theory, profound insights were extracted from it that convey a powerful message regarding the necessities of harmonious behaviour as a precondition for a healthy society, and the dangers of not adhering to it. The Rose Garden of Sa’di, his most prized work and a pillar of Persian literature which is one of the oldest in the world, was the focus of this thesis. I revealed that deep within the Rose Garden, there exists a concept of human integration or reconciliation leading towards an ideal state that Sa’di envisions and the name of the book denotes. This concept lies at the heart of his concern for human well-being and prosperity. The thesis is developed in five stages: first, I describe Sa’di’s personality and life experiences; second, I show how recently there has been an aesthetic turn and a local turn in our understanding of present-day politics and peace, demonstrating how poetry, especially indigenous poetry, can have a significant impact on political behaviour and understanding; third, I deal with

In this essay, I have attempted to show through primary Syriac Christian texts, that there was both a medical school and a bimarestan in Gondeshapur in pre-Islamic Sassanid era, and that Galenic medical texts had been translated and taught in that institution. This opposition, obviously, had certain theoretical bases. Though the power and authority of 'ulama' vis-a-vis the existing government began to increase right from the Safavi period, an attempt to make a direct bid for power is certainly a recent phenomenon. Although there are quite a few general works available on the changing roles of the Iranian 'ulama', there is no serious study of the theoretical changes that took place in the thoughts of Shi'i 'ulama' during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah. This dissertation tries to fulfil this gap. The dissertation is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter deals with the origins of Shi'i theory of imamate. Most of the basic concepts of Ithna 'Ashari Shi'ism (the Twelvers) such as imaroat ghayabat, intezar and taqiyya were crystallised during the Buyid and Mongol periods. According to Ithna 'Ashari Shi'i belief only the Prophet and imams possess legitimate authority -2- to rule over the people. They enjoyed spiritual as well as temporal velayat' over the people.

P ALSETI A Introduction HE PARSIS ARE A community in India that trace their ancestry T and religious identity to pre-Islamic, Zoroastrian Iran (pre-651 CE). Te Parsis presently number approximately 110,000 individuals worldwide, and 57,245 individu als in India according to the Census of India 2011. Tis chapter examines the history of the Parsis and the emergence of a unique religious community in India. Te Parsis are the descendants of the Zoroastrians of Iran who migrated to and settled in India in order to preserve their religion. Zoroastrianism is the religion associated with the teachings and revelation of the Iranian prophet and priest Zarathustra (or Zoroaster, as he was referred to by the ancient Greeks). Zarathustra and his religious message date from the second millennium BCE (c. 1200-1000 BCE). Zoroastrianism was the first major religion of Iran and a living faith in the an cient world. Zoroastrianism shares with Hindu (Vedic) religion ancient roots in the common history of the Indo-Iranian peoples. Te oldest Zoroastrian religious works are the Gāthās: a collection of esoteric songs, poems, and thoughts composed in Old Iranian, later referred to as Gāthic Avestan or Old Avestan, and ascribed to Zarathustra and his culture. Te Gāthās intimate a world of good and evil attributed to antagonistic good and evil spirits. Zoro- astrianism represents an original attempt to unify the existing ancient Iranian dualistic tradition within an ethical framework.     Adam Izdebski C racow CULTURAL CONTACTS BETWEEN THE SUPERPOWERS OF LATE ANTIQUITY: THE SYRIAC SCHOOL OF NISIBIS AND THE TRANSMISSION OF GREEK EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE TO THE PERSIAN EMPIRE Introduction Any scholar of antiquity who reads that most famous of texts created within the late antique East Syriac School of Nisibis – its Statutes, or literally, the Canons – is struck by the similarity of its institutions1 to those of a Graeco-Roman philosophical community. This initially surprising analogy, together with the grand scale of the school’s educa- tional project – providing students with intellectual skills ranging from basic literacy to Aristotelian logic and, fi nally, enabling them to interpret the Scriptures within the East Syriac exegetical tradition – has led many scholars to call this school the ‘fi rst university of Christianity’, or even simply the ‘fi rst university’.2 Although such seemingly anach- ronistic qualifi cations may not do justice to the School’s actual character and wider sig- nifi cance, it remains true that we can demonstrate substantial parallels in a scholarly community’s organisation and self-defi nition between the School of Nisibis and other educational centres that existed in the Graeco-Roman Mediterranean during the same period. In modern scholarship, there is a long tradition devoted to this fascinating con- nection. Recently, in the concluding pages of his monograph on the School of Nisibis, Adam Becker suggested that one may consider the parallels between the Nisibis com- munity and the late antique philosophical schools to be of a very general character, and cannot be attributed to any real contact or infl uence.3 However, as this paper will attempt to demonstrate, there exists suffi cient evidence to reconstruct at least some routes of communication through which Greek ideas would have reached late antique Mesopotamia and contributed to the development of the School’s organisation and self-defi nition.

It comprised the basins of the upper Hari Rud, the Farah Rud, the Rud-i Ghur and the Khash Rud together with the intervening mountain chains.1 Geographic configurations had a profound influence on historical and cultural developments in Ghur. Geography led to the fragmentation of political power as the entire region could not be controlled from one centre. Each fortress exercised inde- pendent sway over the area immediately under its control and patriarchal traditions struck deep roots.
