The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century. -

BY virtue of belonging to two worlds, one the West Syriac world of the Euphrates and the other the Greek world of Alexandria, Jacob of Edessa (c.640-708) could not only translate works from Greek into Syriac but also bring elements of Greek tradition into the study of Syriac scripture. This biculturalism, or at any rate the concomitant bilingualism, was not always acceptable in traditional Syriac circles, but it is evidence of the character of a Christianity lodged in provinces where eastern Roman power and Sasanian authority had long been in conflict. The books of Samuel, here presented and translated by Dr Salvesen, are part of Jacob's version of the Old Testament which he finished in AD 705. notable among other of his works are studies on grammar, a chronicle continuing that of Eusebius, and translations, among them that of the Cathedral Homilies of Severus of Antioch. -

RAMELLI CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE SACRED HEART, MILAN 1 ABSTRACT The Teaching of Addai is a Syriac document convincingly dated by some scholars in the fourth or fifth century AD. I agree with this dating, but I think that there may be some points containing possible historical traces that go back even to the first century AD, such as the letters exchanged by king Abgar and Tiberius. Some elements in them point to the real historical context of the reign of Abgar ‘the Black’ in the first century. The author of the Doctrina might have known the tradition of some historical letters written by Abgar and Tiberius. Belonging to the first generation of Syrian Christians who grew up under Islamic rule, he has in many respects contributed to the consolidation and further expansion of the Syriac cultural heritage. For these reasons, his writings have had a great impact on later authors. However, many of these writings have not been preserved in their entirety. Others have only reached us through a complicated process of transmission or can only be studied on the basis of later adaptations or reworkings. [2] Jacob has not fared well in modern scholarly research. A considerable part of his preserved work has remained unpublished to the present day and a comprehensive monograph on him is still missing. In recent years, however, a number of students and scholars have been studying various aspects of Jacob’s works and some major publications may be expected in the near future. [3] This growing interest in Jacob’s works and place in Syriac literary culture has found expression, among other things, in a 35 36 Dirk Kruisheer, Lucas Van Rompay symposium organized at the University of Leiden on 4 and 5 April 1997 under the title “Jacob of Edessa († 708) and the Syriac culture of his day”. -

BROCK UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD [1] The three volumes, entitled The Hidden Pearl. The Syrian Orthodox Church and its Ancient Aramaic Heritage, published by TransWorld Film Italia in 2001, were commisioned to accompany three documentaries. The connecting thread throughout the three millennia that are covered is the Aramaic language with its various dialects, though the emphasis is always on the users of the language, rather than the language itself. Since the documentaries were commissioned by the Syrian Orthodox community, part of the third volume focuses on developments specific to them, but elsewhere the aim has been to be inclusive, not only of the other Syriac Churches, but also of other communities using Aramaic, both in the past and, to some extent at least, in the present. [2] The volumes were written with a non-specialist audience in mind and so there are no footnotes; since, however, some of the inscriptions and manuscripts etc. which are referred to may not always be readily identifiable to scholars, the opportunity has been taken to benefit from the hospitality of Hugoye in order to provide some basic annotation, in addition to the section “For Further Reading” at the end of each volume. Needless to say, in providing this annotation no attempt has been made to provide a proper 63 64 Sebastian P. Brock bibliography to all the different topics covered; rather, the aim is simply to provide specific references for some of the more obscure items. -

A PORTRAIT OF JOHN BAR APHTONIA, FOUNDER OF THE MONASTERY OF QENNESHRE JOHN W. WATT Cardiff University The period of Late Antiquity is one of profound cultural and reli gious change. For all its apparent and in many respects real conti nuity with the "classical" world, significant developments were taking place which were to influence the future shape of Europe and the Near East. The spiritual authority exercised by outstanding figures in such a context, and the manner in which they were admired by their followers, gives us important insights into the mentality of the time. This contribution will be concerned with a portrait of a figure who could be said to stand on two boundaries, a "historical" and a "geographical". The historical is that between classical urban culture and medieval Christian monasticism, the geographical that between the Greek world and the Near East. It has of course been long rec ognized that neither of these boundaries is rigid or precise, but that the historical and geographical overlaps are broad and complex. The narrower historical frame with which we are concerned is the fifth/sixth century, the geographical that from Antioch to Edessa, and the spiritual authority that exercised by john bar Aphtonia. This name does not spring to mind for a roll-call of the famous of late antiquity, but when we add "founder of the monastery of Qenneshre", the historical importance of this man's work becomes more appar ent. One of the most significant intellectual developments during the later Roman empire was the embedding of Greek culture in sections of the Aramaic-speaking Near East and the rise of a Syriac literary culture which, both in its translations from Greek and its own orig inal productions, preserved and continued the Greek heritage, not only throughout the Byzantine "Dark Ages", but beyond into the ninth and tenth centuries, eventually giving birth to the "renaissance" of classical culture in Islam. -

Empire of Hope and Tragedy: Jordanes and the Invention of Roman-Gothic History Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian Swain Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Timothy Gregory, Co-advisor Anthony Kaldellis Kristina Sessa, Co-advisor Copyright by Brian Swain 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the intersection of political and ethnic conflict during the emperor Justinian’s wars of reconquest through the figure and texts of Jordanes, the earliest barbarian voice to survive antiquity. Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths. -

Chapter 11 The Aksumites in South Arabia: An African Diaspora of Late Antiquity George Hatke 1 Introduction Much has been written over the years about foreign, specifically western, colo- nialism in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as about the foreign peoples, western and non-western alike, who have settled in sub-Saharan Africa during the modern period. However, although many large-scale states rose and fell in sub- Saharan Africa throughout pre-colonial times, the history of African imperial expansion into non-African lands is to a large degree the history of Egyptian invasions of Syria-Palestine during Pharaonic and Ptolemaic times, Carthagin- ian (effectively Phoenician) expansion into Sicily and Spain in the second half of the first millennium b.c.e, and the Almoravid and Almohad invasions of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. However, none of this history involved sub-Saharan Africans to any appreciable degree. Yet during Late Antiquity,1 Aksum, a sub-Saharan African kingdom based in the northern Ethi- opian highlands, invaded its neighbors across the Red Sea on several occasions. Aksum, named after its capital city, was during this time an active participant in the long-distance sea trade linking the Mediterranean with India via the Red Sea. It was a literate kingdom with a tradition of monumental art and ar- chitecture and already a long history of contact with South Arabia. The history of Aksumite expansion into, and settlement in, South Arabia can be divided into two main periods.
