English Department Year 7 Christmas Box Appeal Well done to the following students for their recent music exam results. Since September, Y7 have been reading Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic: A Christmas Carol. Dickens’ Lily Hurp-Grade 6 Piano with Merit timeless message of helping those in need has inspired Y7 to take part in the Christmas Box Appeal. English Dhanu Goonaratne-Grade 5 Piano with classes all worked together getting boxes ready to help Distinction spread Christmas cheer to vulnerable children across Europe. Our original aim was to donate two boxes from Alex Shallcross-Grade 4 Violin with Merit each English class, but the students exceeded all expectations and we donated a total of 52 boxes! Congratulations to you all, what a fantastic achievement! A big thank you to all the students, parents and staff in their generosity and enthusiasm towards this project. On Saturday, Gabz Farrugia, spent an hour at Radio 2 with Rylan. She saw how the studio worked ‘We did the Christmas Boxes because we wanted to and then spoke live on air! Rylan was absolutely be generous and give gifts to people who are not as lovely with Gabz and she is still on a complete high. fortunate as us. We hope it will make the people who She was so inspired that she’s already written to receive these gifts happy and excited and make their Radio Verulam, asking if she can volunteer with Christmas special!’ Isabel Ramachandran 7H them. ‘We put together different boxes for different age groups to go around Europe. In it for a 2 year old boy we put a colouring book and pens, a tooth brush and paste, a hat and socks, soft sweets and a toy car. This was important because especially at Christmas time, it’s very hard to stay warm and it’s a time to give to people who are less fortune than us.’ – Millie Taylor 7H ‘This winter all the Year 7 English classes made Christmas boxes as part of the Christmas box appeal. We each brought in a few items (toys /clothes /sweets / toiletries) to fill the shoe boxes and wrapped them in class to send off to children who are not lucky enough to get presents at Christmas. It was enjoyable putting them together and it gave us a sense of Christmas Lunch satisfaction knowing that they would be going off to people less fortunate than ourselves. We were inspired by our work in class as we have been studying 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens, which is all about sharing the Christmas spirit.’ – Tabitha Devlin 7J Tues 17th / Weds 18th / Thurs 19th December Tickets for the Christmas Lunch, being held on Tuesday 17th December (Y7 & Y9), Wednesday 18th December (Y8 & Y10) and Thursday 19th December (Y11, Y12, Y13) are available to purchase via Parentpay at a cost of £3.65. Please buy tickets via ParentPay by Monday 2nd December. Tickets will not be issued after this time. If you need a login reminder for your ParentPay account please contact Finance. It examines factors influencing the social composition of schools. A total of 23 LEAs completed interviews about their secondary school admissions arrangements The four case study LEAs have significantly different market scenarios. Results show that recent national education policy has not been evenly implemented across LEAs. A combination of organizational, structural, and demographic factors have muted much of the potential impact of school reforms on school admissions. Normative patterns of school use have not been substantially affected by the market reforms or the administrative actions of LEAs. LEAs remain important arenas within which school choice operates because they define kinds of choice available to parents in their administrative boundaries.

Following the cancellation of public exams, this year’s grades will be generated by teacher assessment based on evidence. However, it is important to note that, in line with official guidance, each school will administer a rigorous system of moderation and quality assurance. This will include STASSH schools working together to facilitate the moderation process. Schools need to submit grades to the exam boards by 18 June 2021 and this date, therefore informs the decision about ‘leaving dates’ for Year 11 and Year 13 students. All schools in our STASSH group have agreed that these students will complete their studies at the May half term break, with the last day in school being the 28 May 2021; each school will have its own particular arrangements for each year group. However we would like to build in a cushion between the last day of school and the submission of exam grades. This may be useful if an individual student has missed an earlier assessment task and would provide an opportunity for that student to catch up.

  • NEWS LETTER July 2010 Dear Parents As
HITCHIN BOYS’ SCHOOL A Specialist Technology & Language College NEWS LETTER July 2010 Dear Parents As always at the end of the school year there are a number of colleagues to whom we have to say farewell. Unusually, even before we reached the end of a term, we had to say goodbye to a colleague who I met just over two years ago in Australia. One of the teacher supply agencies invited me to interview teachers there who were looking to work in the UK and one of the people I interviewed I decided would be a good person to have here at HBS. As a result Mr Kidd joined our maths department. He joined us a little after the beginning of the Autumn term but unfortunately his visa did not allow him to remain working here through to the end of this term. So, via various European destinations, he is on his way back to Aus. I thanked him most sincerely for his teaching and his generous commitment to the school, despite knowing that he was only here for a limited time. He really was a pleasure to know and have as a colleague. We wish him a safe and enjoyable journey home and every success in the future. Also from the maths department we say goodbye to Mr de la Forde. Last year he was here on supply for a while and when we needed a mathematician this year I was grateful that he was prepared to stay longer. A scientist by trade, as it were, I am grateful to him for taking on the maths teaching and we wish him all the best in his next post.

Keeping in Touch with the AAT www.albanacademiestrust.org.uk [email protected] NEWSLETTER AUTUMN TERM 2019 ISSUE 003 WELCOME Welcome to the Autumn edition of our AAT Newsletter and I hope you find it interesting and useful in keeping up to date with the activities across all of our schools. It is not possible to cover everything that takes place and for this edition we have organised items under headings rather than by school. The most important news is to welcome Sarah Mitcherson to the AAT as the new headteacher at Ridgeway Academy. She takes over from Jed Whelan who has retired following a lengthy and highly distinguished time in education. Jed did an amazing job overseeing the start of Ridgeway Academy and leading it through its first year. Not only did we see a significant improvement in examination results, but the learning environment was transformed and the popularity of the school in its local community leapt from being under subscribed to being full after year 1. Sarah is very familiar with the community having worked at Sir Frederic Osborn School as a senior leader before moving on to a school in Luton. We are delighted that she has returned and wish her every success. We have been preparing for Wheatfields Junior and Wheatfields Infants’ and Nursery Schools to join the trust and most of the work is now complete. Bringing the primary phase into the trust and widening our horizons is a very exciting development and we look forward to welcoming the new members in 2020. Alan Gray, CEO Sharing Educational Excellence STAFF/WORKING TOGETHER Peer Review On 23rd and 24th October, a team of middle and senior leaders from Ridgeway and Sandringham schools completed the first Alban Academies Trust peer review of Verulam School.
