    ANDRE WILLIAMS' 60th Birthday Party Nov. 8. 1996 Some people fall through the cracks. But Chicago soul singer Andre Williams broke off and blew away, like the last leaf of autumn in a bitter wind. A jive-talking songwriter-producer during the Chicago soul music renaissance of the mid-1960s, Williams had his own dance hits like "Jail Bait" and "Bacon Fat." He also discovered Alvin Cash, who in 1963 had a national hit with "Twine Time." In the fall of 1994, I tried to help songwriter-producer Ben Vaughn find Williams , a.k.a. "Mr. Rhythm." Vaughn wanted to include Williams in the critically acclaimed Elektra/Nonesuch American Explorer Series. The records championed overlooked taproot artists like Jimmie Dale Gilmore and zydeco star Boozoo Chavis. In 1993 Vaughn lovingly produced the late soul singer Arthur Alexander's "Lonely Just Like Me" for the series, and he wanted to produce Williams . The trail dried up with Cash, who said Williams was "in a hospital somewhere." On a recent Sunday, Williams sat alone at Beat Kitchen on the north side of Chicago, where he will front a five-piece band to celebrate his 60th birthday. Opening acts include Chicago doo-wop group legends the El Dorados and former Chess Records vocalist Jo Ann Garrett. Current El Dorados include lead vocalist Pirkle Lee Moses Jr., who founded the group in 1952, and second tenor Larry Johnson of the Moroccos. "I knew you were looking for me," Williams said as a sly smile crept out from under his tan wide-brim hat. "I was in drug rehabilitation and a super depression.

    "KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

Throughout these 19 new songs, the group that Ryan Adams once called "the best American band" are in top form, proving themselves to be more prolific than ever. The Volebeats is a definitive work from a favorite band of many musicians and critics, and it's their first new album since 2005's Like Her LP. The Volebeats began developing their particular brand of country-influenced rock n' roll, with Motown hooks and British Invasion harmonies, in Detroit in the late 1980's. Over two decades, they've released a string of critically-acclaimed albums. They've toured in the USA, Canada, England, and Spain. During a tour with Whiskeytown in the 90's, Ryan Adams actually joined the Volebeats for a week, playing onstage with them and co-writing the song "Everytime" with the group's main songwriters Jeff Oakes and Matthew Smith. The Volebeats appeared onscreen in the movie Shopgirl, playing "Somewhere in my Heart". Also, the Volebeats' "Two Seconds" was covered by country-rock chanteuse Laura Cantrell on her debut LP. This new self-titled LP is the product of a new phase of intense songwriting and recording activity for the band. Singer Jeff Oakes and guitarist Matthew Smith wrote most of the songs. Jeff appeared at Matt's doorstep with notebooks filled with lyric ideas. Very quickly, these scribbled notes were transformed into full-blown songs with hooks, melodies, riffs, and harmonies.
