MIN. BID AUCTION & A LORD LUTHER MY MISTAKE SCHIRECK 101 VG++ 201 West Coast stormer with torrid, caustic vocals from bluesman Luther McDaniels, turned up for Ginger in the late seventies but in the era of Cobblestone, Burning Bush etc was probably a little bit hard-edged to ever win the masses over. The end result is a connoisseur’s item that stands a chance these days and which we haven’t had in quite a while. B THE MASQUERADERS HOW LA BEAT 6606 VG++ 1000 And fresh from ‘America’s Got Talent! (true). If you didn’t know the remaining trio of the group recently got to the quarter finals of this yawntacious show. The lead singer on ‘How’ (Lee Jones) is long gone and, in a way, I’m glad they got as far as they did but no further. Talent like this isn’t for the Simon Cowells of this world. They’re our favourite secret. C AL GARDNER SWEET BABY SEPIA 2 M- 500 Staying with the Motor City and a popular spin in recent times. Mind you, copies didn’t turn up much when it wasn’t popular! This one is a perfect copy, stone mint and played less than seven times. D FREDDY BUTLER PITTER PATTER M&M 332 VG+ 200 Completing a trio of Detroit rarities is this earlier effort from Freddy Butler which has got all it takes for those into the R&B style. A thunderous, ominous rhythm is topped by Butler’s stentorian vocals. Great stuff, particularly if you like ‘em black as the famous location in Calcutta. E KITTENS WAIT A MINUTE VICK 300 M- 200 Time to let the girls in and this Chicago trio of Bernice Willis, Thelma Mack and Laurel Ross made half a dozen or so 45’s with little or no commercial success, but which are all worth owning. This is their rarest outing by far (and probably their first) combining two rather neat midtempo numbers. To confirm this fact we have also put a soundbite of the flipside ‘Somebody New’ for your delectation and delight. F JIMMY ANDREWS BIG CITY PLAYBOY BLUE JAY 5003 VG+ 1200 Superb midtempo item out of New York has never been any less than scarce, scarce, scarce. Not a minter by any means but plays very well indeed. To emphasize this we have included the whole track. G KURT HARRIS EMPEROR OF MY BABY’S DIAMOND VG+ 300 HEART 158 Staying with the Big Apple and a late eighties spin that went on to become a classic. Born as Curtis Futch Jnr, Harris also recorded as Kurtis Scott right out into the early eighties. A little bit of wear and tear means that a listen to the soundbite might assuage any doubt. H TY KARIM YOU JUST DON’T KNOW ROMARK 113 VG++ 2000 If any singer ever stood for the depth of Black Music it is/was Ty Karim. Hardly known beyond the end of the street in Los Angeles where she became a recording artist (she was born Veatrice Thomas in Mississippi) Karim had a totally unique vocal style worthy of much more success than she had. In fact she hardly had any success! The result is that a superb body of work is almost totally scarce and unavailable – also quite excellent. Here is a singer who almost defines ‘rare soul’, and this is her rarest item. I LITTLE MELVIN & THE JEALOUS LOVER VALARIE 4397 M- 280 BOLEROS Things have got a little bit minty on this soulful mover that lay in the shadows for many years without folks realising how good it was. One of a number of great soul records out of Baltimore and, as we said, in rather perfect condition. If you don’t know it, check out the soundbite. J T.J WILLIAMS & THE BABY I NEED YOU JOSIE 1000 M- 250 TWO SHADES OF SOUL Fabulous bouncy mover rose to real prominence around 15 years ago and became a dancefloor packer. The unknown T.J turns in a great performance (he could be Timmie Williams but I doubt it) on another near-perfect piece of vinyl. K HOWARD GUYTON I WATCHED YOU VERVE 10386 VG+ 150 SLOWLY SLIP AWAY A total gem of uptown New York sixties soul from the ex-Top Note singer who also recorded as Guy Howard. Prior to his death in 1977 he had toured with a version of the Platters. A little bit rarer on stock copy than on promo this is one of those records that looks worse than it sounds, in fact it sounds very well indeed, so we include it for soundbite purposes. L THE OPELLS DAY AND TIME LINCO 112 VG++ 200 An almost known early seventies mover on Walter Grady’s label out of Greensboro’ North Carolina, is worth checking out the soundbite for. Lead singer was one Tom Smith and writer James Steadman Jr. was also in the group. The flipside ‘You Know I Love You’ is a quality sweet soul harmony ballad. Both included in soundbite. M FRANKIE & JOHNNY I’LL HOLD YOU UK DECCA M- 300 22376 One of our occasional forays into UK records results in a mint copy of one of the best British productions ever, a non-hit to be proud of in fact from Scottish duo Maggie Bell and Bobby Kerr and always a rarity on original UK release. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 BOBBY RIGHT ON JODY PAULA 352 M- 25 PATTERSON Two hard hitting sides (flipside ‘If You Took A Survey’) got spins at the Burnley all-nighter. 2 LAURA LEE MAMA’S GOT A GOOD THING CHESS 2068 M- 10 What a fantastic soulful sixties mover this is. Highly recommended. 3 JACKIE MOORE HERE I AM SHOUT 232 M- 15 Produced by Jimmy Bishop, virtually an Arctic record, certainly sounds like it. 4 GERALDINE HUNT JUST BELIEVE IN ME ROULETTE 7132 M- 15 One of those early 70s movers with elements of the 60s within its vinyl. 5 EXECUTIVE SUITE WHEN THE FUEL RUNS OUT BABYLON 1111 M- 10 Top rate seventies dancer. 6 JOE SIMON WHEN SOUND STAGE 2667 M- 10 One of a number of great Joe Simon Northern soul records. 7 THE DYNAMICS AIN’T NO LOVE AT ALL COTILLION M- 15 44038 More in a crossover groove – but superb group harmony whatever the definition. 8 SYL JOHNSON TRY ME TWILIGHT 100 M- 15 Total stormer from Syl – great sixties. 9 RONNY SHANNON DETERMINATION STON ROC 4663 M- 15 Detroit from ’67. Excellent midtempo cut from Aretha Franklin’s husband’s label – last few copies. 10 JIMMY DELPHS ALMOST KAREN 1538 M- 20 Midtempo Detroit gem – this or Betty Lavette’s version. Impossible to choose.
