Perceptual Audio Classification Using Principal Component Analysis Zak Burka A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Computer Science Department of Computer Science Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences Rochester Institute of Technology Approved May 6, 2010 Abstract The development of robust algorithms for the recognition and classifi- cation of sensory data is one of the central topics in the area of intelligent systems and computational vision research. In order to build better intelli- gent systems capable of processing environmental data accurately, current research is focusing on algorithms which try to model the types of process- ing that occur naturally in the human brain. In the domain of computer vision, these approaches to classification are being applied to areas such as facial recognition, object detection, motion tracking, and others. This project investigates the extension of these types of perceptual clas- sification techniques to the realm of acoustic data. As part of this effort, an algorithm for audio fingerprinting using principal component analysis for feature extraction and classification was developed and tested. -

** NEWS ** UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL 11.30AM FRIDAY 7th APRIL 9-11 JUNE 2017 DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL MAKES MAJOR SITE IMPROVEMENTS OVER 3000 METRES OF PREVENTATIVE DRAINAGE ADDED NEW AND IMPROVED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLANS 400 STRONG ‘DOG SQUAD’ TO AID DOWNLOAD FANS Download Festival, the world’s premier rock event has announced major improvement plans for the 2017 festival. New drainage systems, alternative traffic routes, improved disabled access, a 400 strong ‘Dog Squad’ to aid festival goers, and a stage relocation are among the new developments put in place to better meet the needs of Download fans. Download Festival takes place on 9 - 11 June 2017 at the spiritual home of rock in Donington Park, Leicestershire. Tickets are on sale now at downloadfestival.co.uk/tickets. Festival Republic’s Melvin Benn says: “As a festival we’re always looking to improve the experience for our customers – it’s always at the forefront of any planning we do, so the feedback we received on last year’s festival has been invaluable. We introduced the dog blog this year which has enabled us to really listen to the Download fans and take on board all suggestions, and in turn implement plans that will see this year’s Download be the best yet.” With over 70 million gallons of rain falling across the weekend – the equivalent of 106 Olympic sized swimming pools – ground conditions at last years festival were naturally waterlogged. This year sees the introduction of a new drainage system which totals over 3,000 metres and quadruples the amount in previous years. An additional 1,115 metres of new ditches have also been added to take water away from site. -

My love of challenging and difficult music has been a part of my life even longer though. As I have worked in the industry through the years, I’ve seen many changes and developments that have been both alarming and reassuring from music that was previously relegated to the underground now being more freely accessible but, at the same time, watching revenue streams shrink on a seemingly weekly basis. This thesis is a manifestation of my desire to better understand the music industry through the eyes of one record label, and bring my experiences and ground these experiences in geographic thought and study. My biggest help in this has been my wife, Laura, who has quietly let me work 80-hour weeks with rarely a complaint. Without her, this thesis could not have been completed. Dan Finn 12/14/12 Access to Moving Image Collections Rebecca Guenther Dan Finn’s Record Collection I. The collection I have chosen is my personal collection of vinyl records. It is perhaps a little misleading to call this a collection as most collectors of records have a great many more than I do. My collection spans just one shelf of a regular size bookcase at the moment, but in total there are 164 different pieces. The collection has great personal value to me because I only buy an album on vinyl if I know I really love the music or have a pretty good idea that I will enjoy it. So though there are not many valuable records in the sense of rare first pressings or collectors’ editions, I find them all valuable as a summary of my musical taste and personal history. The historical side of the value is due to the fact that I’ve been slowly accruing the collection for over a decade, and many of the albums were purchased after seeing a band perform live. I also believe that the collection has value due to the fact that some of the records are of little known, young acts that may have in some cases already disbanded. So though the record is “rare” in the sense that my copy may be one of 50 to 500 copies ever made, the relative demand for these is not very high and so some of them might otherwise get forgotten. Apart from that I came across many of these bands and their releases through touring with my own band, and therefore these connections have sentimental value to me. -
