We, if we're not careful, are bleeding all over the world." — Bono 25 YEARS OF WAR: LOVE ON THE ALBUM WAR Jim Henke tells @U2 what he thinks made War U2's 'rst great album'@U2 March 01, 2008by Scott Calhoun To mark the silver anniversary of the release of War, we asked Jim Henke, chief curator of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and former music editor for Rolling Stone magazine, to help us take a look back. Henke was there when U2 was setting out for America for the rst time. He wrote the rst prole of the band to appear in a major U.S. magazine and put these 50 states on notice with his Feb. 19, 1981, article "U2: Here Comes the 'Next Big Thing.'" Two years later, even though U2 had war on the brain, Henke's June 9, 1983, prole made the point that "Blessed Are the Peacemakers." Henke would eventually write several stories about U2 for Rolling Stone while on staff from 1977 to 1992, including proles, reviews and the Rolling Stone interview with The Edge in 1988. There was a time when "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" were new releases, not the stadium-pounding anthems concert crowds expect to hear today. -

There is agreement with the hippie and punk movements in their assessment of western farcical culture. b. U2 as aggressive, identifying with John the Baptist and Jeremiah. c. Isaiah 40:3-5 as a mission statement (this is set in tension with immersion into Christian subculture). b. “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness....” c. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. What's It Like to Be Black and Irish?
“What’s it like to be black and Irish?” “Like a pint of Guinness.” The above quote is taken from an interview with Phil Lynott, the charismatic lead singer of the Celtic rock band Thin Lizzy, on Gay Byrne’s ‘The Late Late Show’. Lynott’s often playful and bold responses to such questions about his identity served to mask his overwhelming feelings of insecurity and ambivalent sense of belonging. As an illegitimate black child brought up in the 1950s in a strict Catholic family in Crumlin, a working-class district of Dublin, Lynott was seen to have a “paradoxical personality” (Bridgeman, qtd. in Thomson 4): his upbringing imbued him “with an acute sense of national and gender identity” (Smyth 39), yet his skin color and illegitimacy made him the target of racial and social abuse in a predominantly white and conservative Ireland. For Lynott, becoming a rockstar offered an opportunity to reinvent himself and be whoever he wanted to be. While he played up to the rock and roll lifestyle in which he was embedded, Lynott is often considered to have been a man trapped inside a caricature (Thomson 301). Geldof (qtd. in Putterford 182) believes that this rocker persona was Lynott’s ultimate downfall and led to his untimely death at just 36 years of age in 1986. For all his swagger and bravado, behind the mask, Lynott was a troubled, young man searching for a place to belong. While many books have been written about the life of Phil Lynott (e.g. Putterford; Lynott; Thomson), few have drawn attention to the notion of identity and the way in which music provided Lynott with an outlet to explore his self. -

ASTRAL WEEKS? – IT’S NOT JUST ME, … THE RECORDING Van: “The entire LP was recorded in two eight-hour sessions, plus two overdub sessions. That was the whole album.” (Yorke p.51). Astral Weeks was recorded in just two sessions (48 hours) at Century Sound Studios, on West 52nd Street in New York (25 September & 15 October 1968), using NY session (jazz) musicians: Richard Davis (bass), Connie Kay (drums) from the Modern Jazz Quartet, Warren Smith Jr. (percussionist/vibraphone), John Payne (flute/soprano saxophone), and Jay Berliner (guitar), chosen by Lew Merenstein (Producer) in consultation with Richard Davis (bassist). “Merenstein received a call from Warner Bros: ‘We’ve signed Van Morrison, go up to Boston, see what he’s got’. … Morrison played Merenstein his song Astral Weeks: ‘Thirty seconds into it my whole being was vibrating … I had to be the producer to do it. Not that producer, not that producer, regardless of their accomplishments. It had to be Richard (Davis), not that bass player, I don’t want to sound existential, but there was Van, and that was it; there was no band, there were no arrangements, the direction was him singing and playing – that was where I followed. That’s why it came out like it did. To this day, it gives me pain to hear it; pain is the wrong word – I’m so moved by it.” (Marcus p.52-8). Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -
