We surrender too easily to the blues. We, if we're not careful, are bleeding all over the world." — Bono 25 YEARS OF WAR: LOVE ON THE ALBUM WAR Jim Henke tells @U2 what he thinks made War U2's 'rst great album'@U2 March 01, 2008by Scott Calhoun To mark the silver anniversary of the release of War, we asked Jim Henke, chief curator of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and former music editor for Rolling Stone magazine, to help us take a look back. Henke was there when U2 was setting out for America for the rst time. He wrote the rst prole of the band to appear in a major U.S. magazine and put these 50 states on notice with his Feb. 19, 1981, article "U2: Here Comes the 'Next Big Thing.'" Two years later, even though U2 had war on the brain, Henke's June 9, 1983, prole made the point that "Blessed Are the Peacemakers." Henke would eventually write several stories about U2 for Rolling Stone while on staff from 1977 to 1992, including proles, reviews and the Rolling Stone interview with The Edge in 1988. There was a time when "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" were new releases, not the stadium-pounding anthems concert crowds expect to hear today.

Fresno Pacific University Division of Biblical and Religious Studies MIN 486 Topics: Theology, Culture and U2 (2 units) Fall 2006 Session #5, September 26 Innocence and Idealism: Boy, October, War I. Introduction II. Innocence: Boy, October, War A. Listen to clips from Ghettout Music event, 1981, featuring a presentation by Bono, Edge and Larry. (The following are my notes from listening to the session. Only those that are in quotes are Bono’s actual words; all else is my interpretation of Bono’s and Edge’s comments; Larry though present remains silent.) 1. Soundbite 01 Hippies and Punks. a. There is agreement with the hippie and punk movements in their assessment of western farcical culture. b. U2 as aggressive, identifying with John the Baptist and Jeremiah. c. But music must provide hope, not just rage. 2. Soundbite 02 Isaiah and non-Christians. a. Isaiah 40:3-5 as a mission statement (this is set in tension with immersion into Christian subculture). b. “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness....” c. The need to be surrounded by non-Christians; the push toward credibility and accountability from a non-Christian band member (Adam), a manager, and others. d. Already evidenced in the discussion is a developed passion for justice; Bono repeatedly references the killing fields of Kampuchea (Cambodia) as Satanic powers to be fought (this is not through violent means or prayer meetings). e. U2 don’t want to publicize that they are Christian but choose to live letting their lives and music be their witness. f. “I despise religion..

  • PSCI 11 the Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008
PSCI 11 The Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008 Professor Darel E. Paul PSCI 11 Stetson g19 Griffin 6 597-2327 TWR 10am-noon [email protected] Office Hrs.: Mondays 2:00pm - 4:00pm and by appointment Course Description It has been said that U2 is the "world's greatest rock band" – but is it also (unknown to most) the world's greatest – and most unusual – Christian rock band? This course explores the theology, spirituality and politics of U2 expressed through the group's songs, stage performances and human right campaigns. We will travel from the band's origins in the Shalom Christian Fellowship in Dublin to their overtly Christian second album October (1981); the culmination of their superstardom in Joshua Tree (1987); through their techno and ultra-ironic 1990s marked by Zoo-TV, PopMart and Bono's "mock the devil" phase as Mr. MacPhisto; and a return to their roots in All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004). Along the way, we will listen to a lot of U2, watch some videos and tour footage – but it's not all fun and games. We will also read serious theological and philosophical tracts on U2 lyrics and explore the band's complicated interweaving of faith, sexuality, grace, fame, doubt, justice, and the meaning of America in a way which makes them a surprisingly popular and poignant spiritual voice in our superficial and materialistic age. We will also delve into the group's human rights and social justice work, from Band Aid in the ‘80s to (Product)RED today, and in particular explore Bono's Christian social justice moorings.

Illahee Songbook Camp Songs Praise Songs Blessings A Day in the Life There are times in my life, when I am so afraid, And I can’t seem to find where I belong. I will love who I am, and learn from my mistakes, For we all have our own special song. Chorus And the life I live, and the love I give, Will flow free like the rivers and the streams, And wherever I go, I will always know, It’s a day in the life of my dreams. I will reach out my hand, to show that I care, And encourage those whose tears they cannot hide, I will learn how to trust, and to ask when I need help, And to talk about my feelings deep inside. Chorus I have dreams, I have songs, that I carry in my heart, As I walk in harmony upon the earth, Like the sun in the sky, the leaves beneath the wind, I will realize the value of my worth. Chorus Annie Mae Annie Mae, where are you going? Upstairs to take a bath. Annie Mae with legs like toothpicks, And a neck like a giraffe. Annie Mae stepped in the bathtub, Annie Mae pulled out the plug, Oh my goodness, Oh my soul, There goes Annie Mae down that hole! Annie Mae, Annie Mae, glub, glub, glub Ash Grove Down yonder green valley where streamlets meander, When twilight is fading, I pensively roam. Or at the bright noontide in solitude wander, Amid the dark shades of the lonely ash grove.

OUTDOOR WORSHIP July 12, 2020 Call to Worship Worship in Song Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-9 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Worship in Song Pastoral Prayer Benediction (scroll down for lyrics for today’s songs) And Can It Be (Revamp) Verse 1 And can it be that I should gain; An interest in the Savior's blood Died He for me who caused His pain; For me who Him to death pursued Amazing love How can it be; That Thou my God shouldst die for me Chorus 1 Amazing love How can it be That Thou my God shouldst die..

  • 1 U2 and Igor Stravinsky: Textures, Timbres, and the Devil Dr. Dan
U2 and Igor Stravinsky: Textures, Timbres, and the Devil Dr. Dan Pinkston Introduction At first glance, Igor Stravinsky and U2 have little in common. A Russian composer known for ballets and symphonies and four Irish rock stars inhabit different musical genres and approaches. This paper argues that although Stravinsky and U2 are from separate musical worlds, each occupies a similar place of importance within that world, and has a parallel record of artistic achievement and influence. In addition, similarities in their musical thinking and their spiritual response to fame and success will be discussed. The parallels in their musical and spiritual development are fascinating, and as this paper will show, give the listener a new perspective on hearing the music of both U2 and Stravinsky. I. The Music: Textures, Timbres, and the Minimalist Connection Texture and Timbre in the Early Works Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) initially made his mark on the musical world with a series of ballets in the early 20th century. These works, written for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russe, caused a stir in the Parisian musical scene, and Igor Stravinsky became an overnight musical phenomenon.1 The first of these ballets, The Firebird (1910), showed Stravinsky’s complete assimilation of the styles and techniques of contemporary composers such as Claude Debussy, and predecessors such as Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The work was completely modern, if not radical, and revealed that the young Stravinsky was part of an artistic movement that was breaking with the Germanic traditions of the 19th century. One of the prominent features of this new French Impressionistic and Russian Nationalistic music was the prominence of instrumental color, or timbre, in the identity of the music.
