The year 1985 marks the third centenary of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which by removing the right to freedom of worship stimulated a mass migration of the French Protestant community, and is also the centenary of the foundation of the Huguenot Society of London. The Religious Background The term Huguenot, of doubtful etymology, had become established by the 1560s as a popular name for the French Protestants, or, more accurately, Calvinists. In England, however, it has customarily been used in a wider sense as a generic term to cover all Protestant refugees , including those from the Low Countries; this usage has been followed for the purposes of this exhibition. It has seemed reasonable to include refugees who arrived from the 16th century onwards, preceding the main wave of the late 17th century, and to say something about Protestant medical men who never left France, including some who eventually abjured their faith. Protestant emigration from the Low Countries in the late 16th century was in reaction to persecution by the Spanish rulers of the provinces.

Nangle and his original scholarship is here gratefully acknowledged. His two Indexes to the Contributors and Articles in the Monthly Review a together give a history of the Review and biographical accounts of the contributors. In them, the main reviews are listed in alphabetical order of the name of the author of the book reviewed. The Indexes to the Foreign Supplement, which appeared three times a year numbered independently, give only the number of the review article. To show more clearly the significance of Beddoes' work as a reviewer and its relation to his other work, his writings are here placed in chronological order. It can be seen that once the Pneumatic Institute was in being, Beddoes no longer contributed main articles; his reviewing came to an end when he was busy with Hygeia and his attentions turned to Preventive Medicine.     UCL Bentham Project Journal of Bentham Studies, vol. 7 (2004) ‘It is the theatre of great felicity to a number of people’: Bentham at Ford Abbey1 CATHERINE FULLER Bentham Project, University College London Preface Critics express surprise that Bentham was a man capable of any emotional depth, of experiencing pleasure, or of expressing sympathy. Himmelfarb, for example, believed that Bentham’s decision to abandon the plan for solitary cells in the Panopticon prison was prompted by concern with expense rather than a ‘newly aroused sense of compassion’,2 and that his exhortation to gratification of the palate sat ‘oddly from one of Bentham’s puritanical bent’.3 An introduction to a recent edition of Dickens’ Hard Times, refers to Bentham’s ‘undernourished conception of human nature’.4 Such criticisms undoubtedly, and the latter explicitly, take their lead from John Stuart Mill himself who wrote of Bentham: ‘In many of the most natural and strongest feelings of human nature he had no sympathy; from many of its graver experiences he was altogether cut off.’5 Bentham’s own description of his home at Queen Square Place as a hermitage is often taken to mean he saw few people, ate little, and was ill at ease in company. 6 Mack, for example, identifies Bentham’s life as having a ‘tranquil, methodical, semi-monastic routine’. 7 Descriptions of meetings with Bentham that 1 For Bentham on Ford Abbey, see The Works of Jeremy Bentham, ed. SHARPEY AND THE ROYAL SOCIETY For forty years, William Sharpey exercised great power and influence in the London medical and scientific world.153 As early as 1840 he was elected to a term of office as Dean of the Medical Faculty in University College. He had become F.R.S. in 1839, and in 1844-45 was elected to the Council of the Royal Society. In 1853 he was appointed a Secretary, and for almost all his long tenure of that post (until 1872) he was in fact the senior Secretary, Stokes being appointed in 1854. As Secretary, he became ex-officio a member of the Royal Society Club, 'one of the most genial and attractive members the club ever possessed', and in 1862 he became its Treasurer.154 He was an original member of the Philosophical Club, which was formed in April 1847, of forty-seven members of the Royal Society, as a dining club with the aims of keeping alive the enthusiasm behind the Society's reforms of that year, and of increasing the influence of science in Britain.155 Later in his career he served on the General Medical Council and on the Royal Commission on Scientific Education, and played an important part at the time of the anti-vivisection legislation in 1876. I have been able to examine nearly four hundred letters that pertain to Sharpey's period as Secretary of the Royal Society.

    13 Section of the History of Medicine 571 Whether or no Herophilus performed actual dissection (as Galen believed) he distinguished the arteries from the veins, described the meninges, the fourth ventricle and the torcular Herophili, gave the earliest account of the lacteals and named the prostate and duodenum. He placed the seat of intelligence in the brain. Erasistratus described the cerebral ventricular system and traced the cranial nerves into the brain: he settled the origin of the great venous and arterial cardiac vessels, named the tricuspid valve and postulated a capillary system. Besides work on the lacteals he wrote accurately upon the trachea, the chordce tendinew, the atria and the endocardial valves. His mere record of achievements implies a familiarity with human structure which could derive only from dissection. Rufus of Ephesus described the lens of the eyeball and was author of the first scientific anatomical nomenclature: Soranus described the pregnant uterus and Marinus was the author of several anatomical treatises. By Galen's day Egypt was a Roman province and its customs had further changed. Presumably Alexandria no longer offered the anatomical facilities available four centuries earlier, for Galen worked there without ever dissecting the human body. But in Herophilus, Erasistratus and Rufus scientific anatomy had its beginning, and Egypt made their pioneer labours possible: for nowhere else in the world was such unprejudiced and intimate exploration of the human frame feasible, nowhere else were men already so well acquainted with human visceral anatomy, and nowhere else existed any comparable corpus of purely anatomical knowledge. Anatomy as a scientific discipline came to life in Alexandria, the fruit of the Greek seed in the womb of Egypt.
