From the Principal 's Desk Prospectus 1 Session 2018-19

About the College Government Degree College, Basohli was established on 16th August, 2005 and started functioning in Government Higher Secondary School, Basohli. The college shifted to the new building in September, 2010. The building was constructed by NBCC, New Delhi, with the sanctioned amount of Rs. 491.02 Lakhs (Building = 381.13 Lakhs and Development Work = 109.89 Lakhs). Humanity was the first discipline with English, Political Science, Applied mathematics and Computer Applications introduced by the Government. Arts, Science (Medical and Non medical) and Commerce are taught since the Academics Session 2010-2011. Further new subjects Geography and Sociology were introduced from Academic Session 2015-2016. The establishment of the college fulfilled long pending demand of the locals. It served as a new dawn of knowledge and opportunity for local students. This college has been imparting modern knowledge and skills to students for pursuing their career in various subject fields. Government Degree College, Basohli acts as an institute of higher learning to inculcate academic excellence and it also understand the responsibility of imparting excellent knowledge to student community. Our college aims at fulfilling aspirations of all stakeholders and come upto their expectation levels. , a town in district, located at 32.50°N 75.82°E, is situated on the right bank of River Ravi at an altitude of 1876 ft in the Shiwalik Hills. It is surrounded in the north by town of district Doda, in the east and south-east by Himachal Pradesh and Punjab respectively and by district headquarter Kathua, at a distance of 85 kilometres in the south-west. According to the 2011 Census, Basohli town (urban) had a total population of 5433. Males constituted 52.01% of the population and females 47.99%. The average literacy rate was 77%, with 57% of the males and 43% of the females being literate. 12% of the population was under 6 years of age. The languages spoken are Dogri and Hindi. Known as Vishwasthali in ancient times, it was founded by Raja Bhupat Pal in 1635. The ruins of its magnificent palaces tell stories of its rich past. It is also widely known for its school of miniature paintings called Basohli paintings, which feature a bold and imaginative artistic style characterized by vigorous use of primary colours and the typical red borders, the first school of Pahari painting that flourished during the late 17th and 18th centuries. Basohli is also famous for the production of hand-woven Pashmina shawls, a handicraft that is an important source of employment in the area. The rich cultural heritage of the town and the creative talent of its natives is evident in the nationally acclaimed Ramleela, an annual and much-awaited social event that is organized during the Navratri festival in the month of October. The town is rapidly gaining popularity as a tourist centre because of Atal Setu , a state-of-the-art 592 meter long cable-stayed bridge, strategically important and first of its kind in North over River Ravi which has reduced the distance between Pathankot and Basohli by more than 35 km, saving both time and fuel. Another tourist spot being developed by the state government is Purthu, situated on the shore of Ranjit Sagar Lake, an artificial reservoir lake which has come into existence because of the construction of Ranjit Sagar Dam on the Ravi.

Admission Schedule Schedule for admission to Semester Ist of B.A/B.Sc/B.Com for the Session 2018-19 are as under

Admission Process Eligibility 1. Students who have passed Higher Secondary Part II examination (class 12th) of the J&K Board of School Education / CBSE, or an examination recognized as its equivalent by the University of , are eligible for seeking admission to Semester I of BA, B. Sc. and B.Com. for the session 2018 19. 2. The wards of Central Govt. Employees, Army and Para-Military personnel serving in J&K can also seek admission. 3. A candidate, who has not qualified Higher Secondary Part-II examination in Commerce stream, is also not eligible for B.Com against 25% of the total seats provided candidate has obtained 60% in the qualifying examination (55% in case of SC/ST) 4. Students belonging to reserved categories as listed in SRO 126 Dated 28-06-1994 and 294 of 2005 shall get the benefit of 5% marks while drawing up the merit list for admission. However, the benefit of reserved category will be only considered on the basis of documentary proof to the effect of belonging to a particular reserved category. Under process certificate will not be considered for purposes of this benefit. 5. The admission of students, with break in their academic career, will not be considered. However, such of the cases may be considered by the Principal provided the latter feels satisfied about the reasons of the break there of and also subject to the availability of the seats.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION, SESSION 2018-2019 The following certificates, testimonials etc. must be attached with the admission form. a) Provisional certificate (in original) issued by the institution last attended. b) Marks certificate of the last passed examination (original and two attested copies). c) Character certificate issued by the Head of the institution last attended.

d) In case of private candidates, their character certificate should be signed by the first class magistrate /Professor of the college/Panchayat Sarpanch/MLA/SHO concerned. e) Three identical copies of a recent passport size photograph. f) Matriculation certificate (original) and two attested copies. g) Transfer certificate of father or guardian in case of children of military/paramilitary personnel or central government employees. h) Reserved category certificates from the competent authority as stated in SRO-126 Dated 28- 06-1994. i) Affidavit as per requirement.

Note: Students passing from the school board or university other than JKBOSE or university of Jammu are required to produce a migration certificate, transfer certificate, two affidavits and two attested copies of each certificate, in addition to all other above started certificates.

Infrastructural Profile Success of academic and cultural activities of any institution depends upon its supporting infrastructural facilities. Our college, though a young institute provides fully equipped laboratories which are updated from time to time. Recently a Geography lab was setup and classrooms of the college were enriched. Accordingly, laboratories of Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Botany and Computer Applications are stocked with items of need at regular intervals. There are 09 classrooms in the college and one library containing books on various subjects. The college has also one smart class room equipped with latest technology for ICT based teaching.

National Service Scheme To foster a spirit of brotherhood, communal harmony and a service to humanity in general and rural folk in particular, facilities are provided to willing students with their desire for social service, to put in their best for lessening the sufferings of the sick and the downtrodden. NSS unit of the college comprising 100 volunteers has been established under the guidance of the Prof. Rakesh Singh , NSS programme officer who carries activities as per the calendar issued by the NSS programme Coordinator, university of Jammu and by the college itself.

During the previous session, NSS unit has done a commendable job towards the humanity by donating an amount of Rs.13000/- to Chief Minister Relief Fund, collected for flood victims of the state. Unit also celebrated 2nd of October as Swacch Bharat Abhiyan in the college campus. Students enrolled as NSS volunteers are required to put in at least 120 hours of social work and attend one camp of 10 days duration to become eligible to get certificate which are organized from time to time in the college.

National Cadet Corps To inculcate a sense of discipline in the youth and to develop their character, the ideal of service and capacity for leadership in addition to fostering a spirit of camaraderie, the college provides facility for NCC training to student volunteers. The NCC is a voluntary organisation where cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades. This stimulates interest in the defence of the country as also builds up a reserve of man power for the armed forces, NCC C-certificate holders are exempted from the written test of CDS/IMA. This year two cadets of the college NCC unit, Mr. Sohan Singh and Mr. Vipan Sharma have participated in Thal Sena Camp (T.S.C) held at DG. NCC Delhi and won Silver Medal in Tug of War competition. In the ongoing Session 9 cadets have appeared in 'B'Certificate and six cadets have appeared in 'C' certificate examination conducted by the 1 J&K Armed Sqn. Jammu NCC Unit.

RED RIBBON CLUB Red ribbon club of the college has been entrusted to enroll maximum number of volunteers both male and female during the start of the academic session and enlightened them about the various issues like AIDS- causes and its prevention, drug addiction and other social issues under the banner of Red Ribbon Club.
