By Brian Tokar Headquartered just outside St. Louis, Missouri, the Monsanto Chemical Company was founded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny. Queeny, a self- educated chemist, brought the technology to manufacture saccharin, the first artificial sweetener, from Germany to the United States. In the 1920s, Monsanto became a leading manufacturer of sulfuric acid and other basic industrial chemicals, and is one of only four companies to be listed among the top ten U.S. chemical companies in every decade since the 1940s. By the 1940s, plastics and synthetic fabrics had become a centerpiece of Monsanto’s business. In 1947, a French freighter carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer blew up at a dock 270 feet from Monsanto’s plastics plant outside Galveston, Texas. More than 500 people died in what came to be seen as one of the chemical industry’s first major disasters. The plant was manufacturing styrene and polystyrene plastics, which are still important constituents of food packaging and various consumer products. In the 1980s the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed polystyrene as fifth in its ranking of the chemicals whose production generates the most total hazardous waste. In 1929, the Swann Chemical Company, soon to be purchased by Monsanto, developed polychlori- nated biphenyls (PCBs), which were widely praised for their nonflammability and extreme chemical stability. The most widespread uses were in the electrical equipment industry, which adopted PCBs as a nonflammable coolant for a new generation of transformers.

Monsanto se presenta a sí misma como una empresa visionaria, una fuerza de la historia mundial que trabaja para aportar ciencia de vanguardia y una actitud ambientalmente responsable a la solución de los problemas más urgentes de la humanidad. Pero, ¿qué es en realidad Monsanto? ¿Cuál es su origen? ¿Cómo llegó a ser el segundo productor mundial de agroquímicos y uno de los principales proveedores de semillas en el planeta?. ¿Es Monsanto la compañía "limpia y verde" que proclaman sus anuncios, o los mismos apenas representan una operación de imagen que oculta la naturaleza criminal de la compañía? En una Resolución del 13 de diciembre de 2004, el Comité Nacional de Etica en la Ciencia y la Tecnología (CECTE), dependiente del Ministerio de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología de Argentina, tomó conocimiento de la convocatoria al Premio "Animarse a Emprender", instituido por el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas, Educativas y Técnicas (CONICET) y la empresa Monsanto, que otorgaba 30 mil dólares al mejor proyecto en el área de biotecnología y medio ambiente, y recogió las inquietudes formuladas sobre este premio por algunos investigadores. Schon das erste Produkt, das Monsanto 1903 auf den Markt brachte, war ein ökonomischer Glücksgriff - der künstliche Süßstoff Saccharin. Seitdem expandierte das Unternehmen unaufhaltsam zu einem führenden Pharma- und Chemieproduzenten. In Monsantos Produktpalette finden sich Aspirin ebenso wie das gefürchtete Vietnamkrieg- Entlaubungsmittel "Agent Orange", dioxinhaltige Herbizide und das Rinderwachstumshormon rBST. Ende der 1970er Jahre nahm der Konzern die Entwicklungsarbeit an gentechnisch veränderten Pflanzen auf und war damit einer der Pioniere auf diesem Sektor.

    FIN A MONSANTO BIEN VENIDO BAYER El 14 de septiembre de este año (2016), los teletipos y la prensa mundial informaban que el “grupo alemán Bayer cerró la compra de la estadounidense Monsanto en $66.000 millones de dólares. Así lo difundió la firma alemana esta mañana en un comunicado. Bayer pagará 128 dólares por acción. Vale recordar que empezó ofreciendo 122 dólares por acción y la semana pasada había extendido su propuesta a 127,5 dólares por acción. La operación fue aprobada por unanimidad tanto por el directorio de Bayer como Monsanto y la transacción se hará en efectivo. Con la adquisición se constituirá la compañía más grande de agroquímicos y semillas del mundo con ventas superiores a los $28.000 millones de dólares1”. ¿Pero qué es Monsanto Company?, lo primero que debemos exponer es que esta empresa “es una multinacional estadounidense productora de agroquímicos y biotecnología destinados a la agricultura. La sede de la corporación se encuentra en Creve Coeur, San Luis, en el Estado de Missouri. Es líder mundial en ingeniería genética de semillas y en la producción de herbicidas, el más famoso de ellos es el glifosato, comercializado bajo la marca Roundup”. Na, wer hätte das gedacht, der »World Food Prize 2013« geht an Monsanto und Syngenta, die sich mit Gift, Genen und »kriminellen« Aktionen den Nahrungsmittelmarkt aneignen wollen. Nachdem schon der Friedensnobelpreis mit Obama und der EU zur Lachnummer mutiert ist, können wir nun auch diesen »Oscar« der Lebensmittelbranche direkt in die gelbe Tonne treten. Doch »Der Kreuzberger« meint, wer so viele Millionen wie Monsanto in die Stiftung pumpt die den Preis vergibt, der hat es dann auch redlich verdient. Also, herzlichen Glückwunsch an die »Kolonialherren« der Lebensmittelbranche! Geschrieben von bookfield Illegaler Gemüseanbau – Utopie oder Zukunft? Eine weitere Zeitreise ins Jahr 2030… Erst in der Ausgabe 24 habe ich die Zukunft von Kreuzberg (1. Mai) im Jahr 2030 prognostiziert. Wie das Leben so spielt, liefert mir ausgerechnet die Gentechnologie und ihre Verfechter einen Anlass, um erneut eine Prognose zu erstellen. Diesmal nicht über eine lokale Veränderung, sondern eine, die weltweite Auswirkungen hätte, träfe sie denn ein. Wir schreiben das Jahr 2030. Die Menschen laufen durch die Straßen, der Verkehr rollt und alles scheint wie immer. Doch der Schein trügt. Ein Blick in die Auslagen der Obst- und Gemüsehändler reicht aus, um zu erkennen, dass die Gentechnikkonzerne mit ihrem Bestreben den Agrarsektor zu beherrschen, erfolgreicher waren, als der aufbegehrende Widerstand. Die Preise für Kartoffeln, Äpfel und Erdbeeren sind in astronomische Höhen gestiegen. Auch die sonst immer am günstigsten angebotene Obstsorte – die Banane – kostet ein vielfaches des heutigen Preises. Sinkende Löhne und steigende Lebenshaltungs- und Lebensmittelkosten sind verantwortlich dafür, dass die Kunden von den Ständen der Händler fern bleiben.

    From Mitchel Cohen, ed., The Fight Against Monsanto’s Roundup: The Politics of Pesticides (New York: Skyhorse 2019) Monsanto: Origins of an Agribusiness Behemoth – Brian Tokar Many years ago, in the spring of 1998, I was invited to be part of a publication that would make history, but not for the reasons its editors and publisher anticipated. The item in question was a special issue of the UK-based magazine, The Ecologist, profiling the Monsanto corporation and its expanding push to genetically engineer common food crops. Genetically engineered foods, or GMOs (i.e., foods made from Genetically Modified Organisms) had only been grown commercially for two short years, but had already inspired massive worldwide opposition. The first Global Day of Action against GMOs featured demonstrations and public gatherings in 19 U.S. cities, as well as 17 European countries, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Ethiopia.1 Greenpeace painted a 100-foot biodegradable “X” on a field of Roundup-resistant soybeans in Iowa, and later blocked a ship containing genetically engineered soybeans from leaving Cargill’s grain facility on the Mississippi River, outside of New Orleans.2 European activists fought to block imports of GMO corn and soybeans from the U.S., uprooted experimental plots of engineered crop varieties in broad daylight, and would soon succeed in their push for labeling requirements for products of genetic engineering throughout the European Union. Monsanto, which was already the most aggressive promoter of GMO agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic, fought back with as much hype and political clout as they could muster.
