These narratives are Harare North (Brian Chikwava, 2009); An Elegy for Easterly (Petina Gappah, 2009); Writing Free (Irene Staunton [Ed.], 2011);We Need New Names (NoViolet Bulawayo, 2013); The Magistrate, the Maestro & the Mathematician (Tendai Huchu, 2014); African Tears: The Zimbabwe Land Invasions (Catherine Buckle, 2001); The Last Resort (Douglas Rogers, 2009); This September Sun (Bryony Rheam, 2009); and Lettah’s Gift (Graham Lang, 2011). The texts depict a post-2000 Zimbabwean period that is characterised by various forms of turmoil which give rise to exilic sensibilities in terms of the narratives’ thematic concerns and in terms of the aesthetic choices of writers. Dialectically speaking, moving out of, and into, crisis are discrepant movements happening simultaneously on the same space and in one text so that those who move, and those who do not move, are afflicted by the turmoil of existing out of place. This makes problematic the notion of globalisation and the freedoms of nomadic experiences that it has ostensibly ushered. The study critically analyses how these texts depict crisis-induced exile (both physical and symbolic), the [ambiguous] transgression of physical and symbolic borders in the search for enabling spaces and the consequent struggle with issues of space and belonging in a globalising world (which is epitomic of the postcolonial condition) but in which, paradoxically, issues of race, nation and identity remain at the fore in determining who “we” are. I deploy McClennen’s ‘dialectics of exile’ theory in the reading of the texts because of its recognition of the dialectics and tragic edge of exile. Also central to this research is the use of Lefebvre’s concept of space and Geschiere’s notion of belonging. Since space, as Lefebvre has theorised, is in a continuous state of flux due to human action of producing and reproducing, constructing and deconstructing, inventing and re-inventing it, the argument that is foregrounded in this thesis is that the non-fixity of space spells an endless search for it by the characters in the selected narratives which complicates their sense of belonging. This also makes moving out of crisis a paradox since it spells moving into crisis. Also important is the centrality of representation as a symbolic exemplification of globalisation or its nemeses – race, nation and other like shibboleths that are usually associated with pre-modern sensibilities. While the inclusion of black and white writers in the same canon is done as an expression of a post-racial spirit, this study also centralises the politico-aesthetics of representation. Thus, how white writers represent black people, or how black writers represent white people, is critical in understanding the nature of the globe and the everyday spaces on which people circulate. The whole idea behind the dialectic is the simultaneity of the existence of contradictory phenomena. The deployment of the dialectics of exile theory therefore facilitates the conclusion that the globe should be understood dialectically in terms of contradictory phenomena like the pre-modern, modern and postmodern existing on the same space and influencing the politico-aesthetic regimes that the writers of selected narratives deploy and the ambiguities of the movements that the characters undertake. In this way, it is concerned with the way "the 'I' as an enunciatory site is a point of convergence of autobiographical politics and the politics of memory" in Sidonie Smith's words, but also of the politics of the postcolonial nation and of the literary representation of Africa.That, in a sense, is the double bind McCall Smith refers to in the first of the above epigraphs. Coetzee proposes that for the white African person the idea of Africa as homeland often is conceived in parental terms, and in this context perhaps it should not surprise that the relationship is fraught with its psychosis.

Together they offer insight on how different historical contexts affected white fears of belonging in the colonial and post-colonial state. For Falkof, the final death throes of apartheid caused a range of moral panics among white communities. This panic expressed itself largely in moral terms with the issues of Satanism and family murder becoming paramount. Manase’s book, however, focuses on a very different historical context. Manase investigates the outpouring of accounts written by white Zimbabweans since 2000 and the start of the fast-track land reforms. He seeks to answer questions about why so many books were produced at this time; how they portrayed the land reforms; and how they narrated questions of race, belonging and politics. Ultimately, Manase notes, the long contestation over land in Zimbabwe still dramatically affects recent and current accounts of belonging and victimhood. The thesis explores the unique way in which literature may contribute to the better understanding of poverty, a field that has hitherto been largely dominated by scholarship that relies on quantitative analysis as opposed to qualitative approaches. The thesis seeks to use examples from selected texts to illustrate that (as many social scientists have argued before) literature provides insights into the ‘lived realities’ of the poor and that with its vividly imagined specificities it illuminates the broad generalisations about poverty established in other (data-gathering) disciplines. Selected texts from the three countries destabilise the usual categories of gender, race and class which are often utilised in quantitative studies of poverty and by so doing show that experiences of poverty cut across and intersect all of these spheres and the experiences differ from one person to another regardless of which category they may fall within.

E-mail: murraj@unisa.ac.za Remembering the short stories of Yvonne Vera: A postcolonial and feminist reading The Zimbabwean author Yvonne Vera is one of the most important writers to emerge from the African continent over the last two decades. Although she has received widespread critical acclaim as well as academic scrutiny, analyses of her work have mostly focused on her novels. This article attempts to redress this scholarly imbalance by offering a close textual analysis of Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals? through a critical lens of postcolonial and feminist theory. In these stories Vera articulates the internal thoughts of her characters in order to explore the way that oppressed people negotiate the fact of their oppression. It is particularly the female characters’ reflections that reveal the complexity of the position occupied by colonised women and the sophistication of their attempts to address the layered marginalisation to which they are subjected. Vera shows that, for them, an unproblematic participation in the nationalist movement for liberating Zimbabwe from colonial oppression is simply not an option. The article explores the specifically gendered expectations and obstacles that shape the female characters’ struggles in the Zimbabwean context.     An overview of post-independence Zimbabwean poetry Poetry International Web October 16, 2008 An overview seeks to establish patterns that emerge from a given field. It is a mapping of the territory where beacons are placed and contours traced. In the case of Zimbabwean poetry, the stylistic and thematic features are so varied as to complicate the broader picture that we want to establish here. In the variety there are connections, disconnections and reconnections that we want to trace as these are shaped by historical context. These flow from creative processes and purposes, thematic clusters, formal and stylistic patterns, and the poet’s relation to literary tradition. These often cut across the tentative chronological categories that we have tried to impose here. Dambudzo Marechera’s poetry, for example, consistently proves the instability of historical categories. Chirikure Chirikure, Albert Nyathi, Freedom Nyamubaya and Ignatius Mabasa use a retrospective gaze to construct a modern poetic idiom. Despite this instability, we want, as a starting point, to offer a historical background that explains the context and purpose of writing. This background includes a period that has not yet been posted in Zimbabwean cultural consciousness, 1970–79; the decade of promise and hidden skeletons, the decade of ESAP and rising discontent; and then the post-2000 era. Each decade is crowded with social, economic and political events that have a bearing on culture.
