The struggle for life is long. The search for fulfilment and contentment in life is tough but victory over challenges must be the first order of a Shona/African person’s business. iv ABSTRACT The research examines the interface of history and fiction. It predominantly focuses on historical fiction on the Zimbabwean liberation war written in Shona, Ndebele and English and published after the attainment of political independence in 1980. Historical fiction on the liberation war is both biographical and autobiographical. Consequently, the study comes to the conclusion that historical fiction is a veritable stakeholder in the history issue in Zimbabwe. It becomes another type or source of history that cannot be papered over when dealing with the nation’s history. In a nation where liberation war history is not only taken seriously, but is also a vigorously contested terrain, historical fiction becomes part of those discursive contestations, particularly on nation and nationalism. It is in this regard that the study problematises the interface of history and fiction by reasoning that historical fiction published in the early 1980s largely advances a state-centered perspective which views history, nation and nationalism in positive terms. This discourse uses history in order to argue for a single nation that derives its identity from the heroic and symbolic guerrilla characters. Nationalism is exclusively presented as humanising and as being the sole legitimate political brand capable of leading the nation. On the other hand, historical fiction written in English and published in the late 1980s onwards represents alternative historical truths that contest nationalism and debunk official definitions of nation. This discourse leads to the pluralisation of perspectives on nation and nationalism. The focus on historical fiction published in three languages used in Zimbabwe is a conscious attempt to transcend ethnicity in critical scholarship. Discussing novels in Shona, Ndebele and English, which are the three main languages in Zimbabwe, makes it possible for the study to draw reasoned conclusions on the bearing of time, language, region and background among others on historical representation. This undertaking brings to the fore how literature responding to similar historical processes appears moderately conjunctive and principally disjunctive. At that time, Prof. Chimhundu was commissioned by UNESCO to write a report on the meeting and to compile the speeches and other documents. The manuscript that he subsequently submitted to UNESCO was left unattended until Director Noriko Aikawa (Intangible Heritage Unit of UNESCO) approached me in a letter dated February 6, 2001, where she expressed UNESCO’s wish to have the manuscript published as soon as possible. She suggested that both a publisher and funds for subsidising the publication be found. The latter was a rather difficult issue, since a number of potential donors who were contacted while I was in Namibia were not able to support the publication. Finally, some Norwegian colleagues from Oslo University responded positively. They were prepared to fund publication of the document in Namibia within the framework of the trilateral cooperation between Universities of Oslo, Zimbabwe and Gothenburg. In the meantime, the manuscript returned by UNESCO was thoroughly checked to make sure that the version to be submitted to potential donors and publishers was in a proper shape.

    Using Indigenous Languages for Teaching and Learning in Zimbabwe Juliet Thondhlana The question of which language(s) to use for teaching and learning is a crucial one in bilingual and multilingual contexts. In former colonial countries, it is a question that has occupied the agendas of many governments since they attained independence. Some countries have made strides towards addressing it (e.g., Tanzania and Nigeria), although it continues to haunt others. As recently as 1997, African state representatives gathered in Harare, Zimbabwe for an inter- governmental conference on language policies in Africa hosted by UNESCO in order to discuss the question of language planning and policy in Africa. The meeting resulted in the Harare Declaration in which each country represented declared its commitment to the vision for Africa as expressed in the following statements: • A democratic Africa that seeks to enhance the active participation of all citizens in all institutions—social, economic, political, et cetera; • A democratic Africa where development is not construed in narrow economic goals but instead in terms of a culturally valued way of living together; and within a broader context of justice, fairness and equity for all; respect for linguistic rights as human rights, including those of minorities; • In broader terms, Africa that acknowledges its ethno-linguistic pluralism and accepts this as a normal way of life and as a rich resource for development and progress; • A democratic Africa that seeks to promote peaceful coexistence of people

Charles Diggs' House sub­ committee on Africa on Feb. 26. Cabral, one of Africa's most prominent revolutionary leaders, opened his testimony with a personal salute to Chairman Diggs for his activity in presenting to Congress the vital questions concerning African liberation movements. "Our presence here today," he told Congressman Diggs, "is to salute you, and through you to salute that part of the American nation which supports our struggle ... " Concerning the seven year struggle for independence waged by the PAIGC in Guinea-Bissau, the revolutionary leader said: "We are not fighting the Portuguese people. We are fighting Portuguese colonial domination. We are fighting for our independence." Exhibiting photographs showing the effects on the people of Guinea of the napalm attacks made by the Portuguese, Cabral told the subcommittee it appears that the U.S. supports Portuguese colonialism, "because the weapons used against us come, in large part, from t.he U.S. through NATO." Some of the photos and film brought by Mr. Cabral showed captured napalm bombs with the inscription: property of the _U_._S_. A_i_r .::.F--,o;..;.:r.;...c.;;..e~. The liberation force, led by Amilcar Cabral, has won more than two-thirds of Guinea-Bissau, a country of 800~OO people sandwiched between Senegal and the Republic of Guinea.

Clemenciana Mukenge University of Zimbabwe. ABSTRACT This study explores the role of indigenous languages of Zimbabwe in the production and implementation of HIV and AIDS information, education and communication (IEC) materials. It is premised on the assumption that indigenous languages are crucial elements of sustainable development, given their accessibility to the populace, enabling effective HIV prevention dialogue. The study establishes that chiShona and isiNdebele languages are indispensable modes of HIV and AIDS communication that embody local values and permit information access to the majority. Recommended is their sustainable use, as well as their elevation to source languages of IEC materials. Moreover, a written language policy in Zimbabwe is required in order to promote the functional role of indigenous languages, not only in health communication, but in all other areas of national development. Reviewed by Elaine Windrich (Stanford University) Published on H-SAfrica (October, 2006) The Struggle for Land in Zimbabwe The author of this book could hardly have chosen a better place for a study of land, race, and power in Zimbabwe. For Kaerezi, home of the Tangwena people in the Nyanga District in the Eastern Highlands bordering Mozambique, has long been a disputed territory. From the 1960s it was a site of land evictions and black resistance, culminating in the "Second Chimurenga" (the war of liberation from white minority rule), which was launched from that area. It will also be remembered for its multi-racial initiatives, pioneered by Guy and Molly Clutton-Brocks at St Faith's Mission (and later at Cold Comfort Farm), and by the Nyafaru farm cooperative, a project founded on white-designated land and managed by African nationalists such as Didymus Mutasa (now Minister of Land and Security) and Moven Mahachi. Although these endeavors were ruthlessly suppressed by the white settler regime, the resistance of Chief Rekayi Tangwena and his people became a cause of international concern, with posters and t-shirts depicting the heroic chief (see photo p. xii) and letters, articles, and pamphlets being produced and widely circulated by anti-apartheid organizations. The Tangwena people also assured their place in Zimbabwe's history by helping Robert Mugabe to escape through their territory to Mozambique, where they too went into exile to continue the struggle after their homes and livelihoods had been destroyed by the Rhodesian authorities.

This multidisciplinary ethnographic 1890-2006 study explores how insights from pragmatics, semiotics, semantics, among others, can be used to glean the intended and implied meaning(s) of various first names. Six sources namely, twenty seven NADA sources (1931-1977), one hundred and twenty five Shona novels and plays (1957-1998), four newspapers (2005), thirty one graduation booklets (1987-2006), five hundred questionnaires and two hundred and fifty semi-structured interviews were used to gather ten thousand personal names predominantly from seven Shona speaking provinces of Zimbabwe. The study recognizes current dominant given name categories and established eleven broad factors behind the use of given names. It went on to identify twenty-four broad based theme-oriented categories, envisaged naming trends and name categories. Furthermore, popular Shona male and female first names, interesting personal names and those people have reservations with have been recognized. The variety and nature of names Shona people prefer and their favoured address forms were also noted.

    An overview of post-independence Zimbabwean poetry Poetry International Web October 16, 2008 An overview seeks to establish patterns that emerge from a given field. It is a mapping of the territory where beacons are placed and contours traced. In the case of Zimbabwean poetry, the stylistic and thematic features are so varied as to complicate the broader picture that we want to establish here. In the variety there are connections, disconnections and reconnections that we want to trace as these are shaped by historical context. These flow from creative processes and purposes, thematic clusters, formal and stylistic patterns, and the poet’s relation to literary tradition. These often cut across the tentative chronological categories that we have tried to impose here. Dambudzo Marechera’s poetry, for example, consistently proves the instability of historical categories. Chirikure Chirikure, Albert Nyathi, Freedom Nyamubaya and Ignatius Mabasa use a retrospective gaze to construct a modern poetic idiom. Despite this instability, we want, as a starting point, to offer a historical background that explains the context and purpose of writing. This background includes a period that has not yet been posted in Zimbabwean cultural consciousness, 1970–79; the decade of promise and hidden skeletons, the decade of ESAP and rising discontent; and then the post-2000 era. Each decade is crowded with social, economic and political events that have a bearing on culture. The decade of the Liberation war, 1970–79, provides a critical reference point against which the postcolonial experience is measured in much of Zimbabwe’s poetry, particularly in the work of poets like Musaemura Zimunya, Chenjerai Hove, Freedom Nyamubaya, Chris Magadza and Chirikure Chirikure.

    Journal of Education and Practice www.iiste.org ISSN 2222-1735 (Paper) ISSN 2222-288X (Online) Vol.7, No.9, 2016 Standardisation a Considerable Force behind Language Death: A Case of Shona Isaac Mhute Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Language and Media studies, Zimbabwe Open University, Masvingo Regional Campus Abstract The paper assesses the contribution of standardisation towards language death taking Clement Doke’s resolutions on the various Shona dialects as a case study. It is a qualitative analysis of views gathered from speakers of the language situated in various provinces of Zimbabwe, the country in which the language is spoken by around 75% of the population. It is argued that, under normal circumstances, standardisation should not result in people having to cede more than half of their way of speaking. The paper demonstrates how people speaking varieties that were initially treated as independent languages may be forced to speak in a prescribed way inspite of whether they really speak the same language or not which in turn leads to language shift and death. The language policy of the entire nation would result in the disappearance of motivation to continue with the old way of speaking which in turn leads to the death of that particular language or way of speaking. The paper recommends nations to understand the importance of multilingualism and labour for its preservation.
