EAST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER Fall 2012 Editors: Steve Narracci & Terri Vitale Hall of Fame Honors Six The twenty-sixth Hall of Fame induction will be held Sunday, November 18, 2012, at the Country House, East Haven. Scheduled for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame are Earl Horton, Amanda Signore ’01, Kevin Glenn ’97, and David Coulombe ’89. Distinguished Graduate Awards will be presented to Dr. John Fitzgerald ’58, and Robert Narracci ’86. Signore is the first female in school history to letter in three sports all four years. Amanda captained the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams, was a three time All-SCC, two time All-State, three time team MVP, All-Area volleyball player and holds the school record in assists (1508). She was a two time All- SCC in basketball, team MVP three times, third team All-State, and had a three year scoring average of 11.1 points per game. In addition, she was All SCC softball in her junior year. A graduate of Western New England University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Amanda was an All Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) selection three years, four time female athlete of the week, Rookie of the Week, and is ranked 11th In NCAA Division III with 2002 service aces. In 2005 she was the first female intern for the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. From 2006-08 she was a Casino Beverage Supervisor at the Mohegan Sun Casino and presently is a sales and marketing representative for American Eagle Embroidery & Screen Printing in North Haven. After moving to East Haven in 1960, Earl Horton began coaching baseball in the Foxon Recreation League. He then joined the East Haven Gridiron Club, was part of a committee that brought youth football to East Haven, served as President of the Club, and was Director of the youth league from 1981-82. For twenty-five years he was a volunteer video coordinator for the East Haven High School football team, taping all varsity and freshman games and providing copies to the coaching staffs. For his efforts the press box was named in his honor in 2008. In 1993 he began taping all Hall of Fame Awards until he was injured in a serious auto accident in 2007. He presently tapes East Haven youth football games. Earl served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and is an acclaimed military historian. Joining the Southern Connecticut Gas Company in 1950, he celebrated over fifty years of service ending his career as one of the most renowned trainers in the field of natural gas. In addition to supporting East Haven athletics, he was a member of Cable TV Advisory Committee (Channel 18), the school building committee, and in 1995 was awarded the Mayor’s Merit Award. Glenn was a three sport athlete serving as captain in all three. As a three year starting quarterback, he was a two time All-SCC, honorable mention All-State, and holds the school record for career passing yards (2,638), all- purpose yards (3,554), passing yards in a season (1053), passes completed in a season (73), career TD passes (11), and most passes completed in a single game (15). He was a four year starter and was a wide receiver/punt returnee as a freshman In his senior year he started as defensive back in the annual New Haven County vs. Fairfield County All- Star game. Glenn was also a great track and field athlete, competing at the state level in the 110 MHH, 300 MIH, and the Decathlon. As a freshman at the University of New Haven, he was a member of the team that participated in the Division II National Championship. After his freshman year he left UNH and began his law enforcement career with the North Haven Police Department in 2001 and was assigned to the patrol division. For four consecutive years he was awarded the MADD Drunk Driving Award. In 2004 he became a certified police instructor, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2010, and in 2011 to the rank of Lieutenant, assigned as Commander of the Uniformed Services Division. Currently, Kevin is the Commander of a regional SWAT Team, K-9 Division, Motorcycle Unit, Dare Officers, and Patrol in the Town of North Haven. Coulombe was a four year member of the golf team and captain in his junior and senior years. In his junior and senior years, David was the Housatonic League Golf Champion and was undefeated in his senior year. At the end of his high school career, he was named Register Youth of the Year, CIAC Scholar Athlete, and Valedictorian of the senior class. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a B.A. in Politics and a B.A. in Sociology with a concentration in crime and social control. During his stay at Wake Forest, he was a four year member and President of the WFU Karate Club and holds a Third Degree black belt. He was a three year member of the Big Four Challenge golf competition between Wake, UNC, Duke, and NC State. Wake won the competition all three years. David has been a Tae Kwon Do instructor at WFU and has been All Region Volleyball player for many years. He and his wife Jennifer are active in the community teaching Lindy Hop/Swing dance at all levels. David is a senior manager for General Motors Acceptance Corporation. He and his wife live in Winston Salem, NC and have two sons, Dylan, 3 ½, and Logan 1 ½. Fitzgerald was a member of the basketball and baseball teams, and as a member of the 1958 State Championship Baseball Team, he made a crucial throw from center field to stop a run from scoring in East Haven’s 1-0 win. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from UConn and received a ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe from 1964-66. After his stint in the army, he enrolled in SCSU and received a M.S. in Elementary Education. From 1966 to 1969 he taught 8th grade math at the East Haven Middle School. He enrolled at New York University and received a Ph.D. in Educational Administration in 1973. After three years as an administrative assistant at North Haven High School, he was appointed Principal of Greenwich Jr./Sr. High school in Greenwich, N.Y. where he served from 1973-1999 until retiring in 1999. John served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1962-1993 retiring as a full colonel. Upon retiring in 1993, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and thr Legion of Merit. In Greenwich, he was the Board of Education representative to the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the American Legion, and a 40 year member of the Lion’s Club, twice serving as President and also Zone Chairmen. John has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 39 years and was a Fourth Degree Knight. He was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the School Administrators Association of New York State. He and his wife Athena have one daughter, Alethea. Narracci was a four year member of the swim team, captain in his senior year, and held the school record in the 100 yard breaststroke. He was the Register Youth of the Year and received the Harvard Book Award. He is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture. He joined Pelli, Clarke, Pelli Architects of New Haven in 1989 and is presently a Senior Associate. He is currently project manager and senior designer for a 600,000 square foot office tower in Dallas, TX, and for a 46.000 square meter office tower in Monterey, Mexico. He has been project manager and senior designer for the following completed projects: Aria Resort in Las Vegas, a 4,000 room hotel, convention center, a 250,000 square foot pool, spa, casino, and restaurants; Porta Nuova, a 23 acre mixed-use development in Milan, Italy; 1500 Louisiana, a 40 story, 1.2 million square foot office tower in Houston, TX;Torre Bank Boston in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a 29 story, 500,000 square foot tower; Design and technical coordinator of curtain walls for the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, FL Robert is the former Chairman of the Board of Art Space in New Haven, an instructor at Temple University, Yale University, and a guest critic at Yale, Rice and Northeastern Universities. BOOK SIGNING Don Harrison ’57, spoke about and signed copies of his new book, Hoops in Connecticut: The Nutmeg State’s Passion for Basketball, at the Hagaman Memorial Library in East Haven last January. The book includes interviews with many hometown stars. His career encompasses more than four decades as a freelance writer, fourteen years as sports editor of the Waterbury Republican, lengthy stints in corporate advertising and public relations, and seven years as founding editor of a weekly newspaper, the Greenwich Citizen. His book is available in most bookstores in Connecticut as well as online at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and the publisher’s website, History Press.com.
