2019 Connecticut State High School Basketball Championships 3 WELCOME TO THE CIAC BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS On behalf of the 2018-2019 CIAC Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Committees we would like to welcome all of you to the Mohegan Sun for this weekend’s state boys’ and girls’ basketball finals. Along with an exciting weekend of basketball with nine championships culminating three weeks of tournament action the Committee is happy to honor an illustrious group of individuals that have given numerous years of service to both boys’ and girls’ basketball in Connecticut: Mike Walsh, Basketball Coach, Trinity Catholic High School; Mike Fritch, Girls Basketball Coach, Torrington High School; Ted Lombardo, Retired Official, IAABO #8; Tony Gigliotti, Official, IAABO #8; Dave Sousa, Retired Athletic Director, Waterford High School; Lori Riley, Sportswriter, Hartford Courant; and finally, former CAS-CIAC Executive Director, Dr. Karissa Niehoff, Executive Director, NFHS. The basketball committee is thrilled to continue our relationship with Mohegan Sun which has helped create an atmosphere and venue for our finals that is second-to-none and is why we elected to honor their commitment to the CIAC with this year’s Tournament Dedication. We know the players, fans, and coaches will provide competition that is equal to this wonderful setting. Along with establishing a set of eligibility standards and a code of ethics that has enabled us to administer our competition in a fair and equitable manner the basketball committee stress the importance of sportsmanship from all those taking part in this weekend’s festivities. Please support this effort by supporting the players, officials and coaches in a positive manner and cheering for your team not against the opponents. -

(Gregg Hunt - continued from page 3) Dedication Award Gregg has coached collegiate summer baseball in the New England Collegiate Baseball League for the Torrington Twisters and Manchester Silkworms. He has also coached the Torrington Titans in both the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Paul R. Hoey League and Futures Collegiate Baseball League. His teams made six appearances in the league finals over 15 years. He currently has the most career wins of any Associate Executive Director, CIAC manager in NECBL history. Gregg now serves as a deputy commissioner of the NECBL. Gregg has been a member of the Western Connecticut Soccer Officials Paul Hoey, long-time principal of Newington Association for 33 years, officiating at several state finals. He has two children, High School, joined the CIAC central office David, a second year law student at Boston College, and Katie, a junior at the staff in 2004 as associate executive director University of South Carolina. for the CIAC after a thirty-five year career as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal. Paul is the liaison to the CIAC eligibility committee and the CIAC Eligibility Review Board. As such, he is responsible for processing and monitoring all appeals of Jackie DiNardo - Coach Eligibility Committee decisions. Policing Connecticut’s Hallways: The Prevalence and Impact of School Resource Officers in Connecticut Appendix A In this appendix, we describe in greater detail the statistical analyses and results used in our report. Data Sources The data used in this report come from three sources: the 2015-2016 and 2013-2014 United States Department of Education Office of Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC), the 2015-2016 school year reporting from the Connecticut State Department of Education data reporting tool “EdSight,”1 and District Reference Groups (DRG) designations that group school districts according to similar community characteristics and resources. We used the 2015 SDE DRG designations.2 Our data set included data from charter schools where possible, but we should note that charter schools are their own district so any analyses where we look at District Reference Groups do not include charter schools. The CRDC is a federally mandated reporting of school-level data regarding educational access for protected classes of students (gender, race/ethnicity, nationality, disability status, etc.). All public schools (PreK-12) in the country are required to report to the federal government on issues such as the use of exclusionary discipline, teacher experience, and enrollment in advanced courses. EdSight is a state repository of school-, state-, and district-level education data taken from all school districts in Connecticut. The authors of this paper acknowledge that the data in this study are now two years out of date. Because there is no central public reporting of the presence of SROs in CT, data on which schools employ SROs are most available and accessible through the CRDC website, but the last available year of data available through this data set is School Year (SY) 2015-2016. -

Data obtained from highschool vocational agriculture graduating classes of 1961,1964, 1967 and 1970 bymeans of a mail questionnaire and 20interviews revealed that: (1) enrollment has doubled from 1961to 1970,(2) post-secondary education was positively correlated withthe level of income and (3) about ten percent of the vocationalagriculture graduates attendeda 4-year college. Multiple regressionanalysis supported the hypothesis that the mean salaries ofpersons employed in the non-farm sector were higher than those workingon the farm. An analysis of variance substantiated the fact that work experienceis positively correlated to higher income levels. Although moststudents value the FFA, the 1970 survey showed thatmany respondents felt that FFA become impersonal and has ignorednew fields related to agriculture. -

A Historical Timeline
Southern Connecticut Conference A Historical Timeline Summer 1991 – A committee of five superintendents, led by chairman and Wallingford superintendent Joe Cirasuolo, begin to explore the possibility of a forming a super conference in the New Haven area. Members of the committee included John Onofrio (West Haven), Dave Shaw (Hamden), Steve Gordon (Bethany-Orange-Woodbridge) and Gene Coppola (Seymour). The impetus for these discussions was the plight of four area high schools who were forced to travel substantial distances in order to have a full sports schedule. Other concerns were raised including the changing size of student enrollment in area high schools and racial/ethic isolation. November 19, 1991 – The All Connecticut Conference is reduced to six schools after East Catholic of Manchester decides to leave the league at the conclusion of the 1991-92 school year. March 10, 1992 – A meeting was held at Carrigan Middle School in West Haven with area superintendents to discuss a proposal for a super conference. Thirty-two high schools were contacted about potential interest. October 1992 – Jim Benanto, athletic director at Shelton High School, agrees to chair a Planning Group to develop proposals about the mega conference, specifically divisional formats. January 19, 1993 – Twenty-seven schools attend a meeting hosted by Peter Young, executive director of ACES, with the purpose of reviewing proposals for the mega conference. May 13, 1993 – Twenty-one schools attend a meeting, led by Shelton athletic director Jim Benanto, to discuss and finalize proposal of a mega conference to area superintendents and principals. The conference would be divided into three divisions and three different scheduling formats are proposed for sponsored sports. -

CENTRAL Summer 2010 the magazine for alumni & friends of central connecticutfocus state university Connecticut in the US Civil War Matthew Warshauer ’90 The Evolving Social Landscape of Northern Ireland • Connecticut Drug Policy PRESIDENT’S CORNER We are making our final preparations for opening the new academic year at Central, and we’re looking forward to a very active and exciting year for the campus community as well as for the wider central Connecticut region. Our incoming first-year class appears to be one of our most able groups ever. On average, their high school ranking is up 2 percentile points over last year’s, making it the highest level on record. It’s good to know that, according to the Princeton Review in its latest edition of The Best Northeastern Colleges, these students will find that CCSU offers a “host” of strong academic programs, including “solid study abroad options” and “ample undergraduate research opportunities.” The Review also reports there is “a very welcoming atmosphere” and our small class sizes “make it easier to have one-to-one communications” with professors. All of these are conditions that support student success, and we’ve worked hard to develop them. In addition to our new academic programs in journalism, nursing, and civil engineering, students can become involved in our growing community engagement programs. As you may remember, the University formally adopted community engagement as one of its core elements of distinctiveness. During the coming year, I expect new opportunities to emerge for students and faculty to interact with the community beyond campus for the benefit of both the community and the students’ learning.
