Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences, number 9, 29 pages, 18 figures, 1981.—Amphiroa (Coral- linaceae, Rhodophyta) is a tropical and subtropical genus of articulated coralline algae and is prominent in shallow waters of the Gulf of California, Mexico. Taxonomic and distributional investigations of Amphiroa from the Gulf have revealed the presence of seven species: A. beauvoisn Lamouroux, A. brevianceps Dawson, A. magdalensis Dawson, A. misakiensis Yendo, A. ngida Lamouroux, A. valomoides Yendo, and A. van-bosseae Lemoine. Only two of these species names are among the 16 taxa of Amphiroa previously reported from this body of water; all other names are now considered synonyms. Of the seven species in the Gulf of California, A. beauvoisii, A. misakiensis, A. valomoides and A. van-bosseae are common, while A. brevianceps, A. magdalensis, and A. ngida are rare and poorly known. None of these species is endemic to the Gulf, and four of them, A. beauvoisii, A. misakiensis, A. valomoides, and A. ngida, also occur in Japan. The name was given to indicate that unidentifi ed coralline algae are the major component. In this fi rst contribution to the knowledge of the coralline fl ora of the Litavac, Lithoth- amnion valens seems to be the most common species, with an unattached, branched growth-form. Small rhodoliths composed of Phymatolithon calcareum and Mesophyllum roveretoi also occur. The Badenian benthic association is dominated by melobesioid corallines, thus it can be compared with the modern maërl facies of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Since L. valens still survives in the present-day Mediterranean, an analogy between the Badenian Litavac and the living L. valens facies of the Mediterranean is suggested. By reviewing material ofgeniculated coralline algae from Brazil we found that a robust taxon occurring from north of Espirito Santo to Rio Grande do Sui States had erroneously been identi fted in the Brazilian literature as iania rubens (Linnaeus) Lamouroux. Detailed study of this material and comparison with similar species led us to identify it as iania crassa Lamouroux. It presents a dioecious erect epilithic thallus up to 9 cm length, large basal disc, laxly dichotomous branches, intergenicula long, 200-300(-400) J.lm wide and 6-20(40) tiers of medulary cells and genicula 180-240 J.lm long. These findings led us to establish that iania crassa presents a amphi-Atlantic distribution occurring on the African coast, Ac;:ores Arquipelago and Brazil. A comparison with related taxa is presented, stressing the need to review all the references of1. rubens to the Atlantic Ocean. It Was Recognized During Geological Excursions in the Bükk Mountains
NEWER LIME-SECRETING ALGAE FROM THE MIDDLE CARBONIFEROUS OF THE BÜKK MOUNTAINS, NORTHERN HUNGARY M. NEMETH INTRODUCTION It was recognized during geological excursions in the Bükk Mountains that certain limestone lenses of the Upper Moscovian shale sequence yield other calcareous algae than those dasycladaceans (Vermiporella sp., Anthracoporella sp., A. spectabilis PIA and Dvinella comata CHVOROVA) described previously by HERAK, M. and Ko- CHANSKY, V. [1963]. From limestone samples came from the No. 1 railway cutting of Nagyvisnyó, from the eastern side of the Bánvölgy (NW to the Dédes Castle), from the southern vicinity of the village Mályinka, from Kapubérc, from western side of the summit of Tarófő and from deeper part of the main lens of Nagyberenás the forms of the genera Archaeolithophyllum, Ivanovia, Oligoporellal and Osagia have been recognized. The first two genera belong into the phylloid algae of PRAY, L, C. and WRAY, J. L. [1963]. The genus Macroporella is classed among the family Dasydadaceae, while the Osagia is a crustose calcareous alga of uncertain systemat- ic position. Most interesting are the phylloid algae, which are similar in shape and size to leaves and are slightly or strongerly wavy, in spite of the morphological similarity that suggested by their common name, these are forms of different groups (e.g. green or red algae). This group was named by American authors, because these phylloid algae are abundant, occasionally in rock-forming quantity in the Middle and Upper Carboniferous (Pennsylvanián) and Lower Permian of the USA. On the other hand, the preservation of the cavities between the wavy plates of these algae pro- motes significantly the formation of hydrocarbon traps within the embedding rocks. -

Mostly on the basis of conceptacular features, the name Jania pusilla (Sonder) Yendo is confirmed for a species also known as Corallina nana Harvey or Corallina lenormandiana DeToni. J. pusih is a short plant with a crustose base; it has broad intergenicula, large conceptacle chambers, and the largest tetrasporangia known for articulated corallines. These plants are endemic to southern Australia where they occur on certain species of Cystophora. INTRODUCTION The southern Australian coast is rich in endemic algae and seagrasses, many of which have characteristic epiphytes. This is particularly true of the members of the Fucales, which carry a rich flora of host-specific algae. The widely distributed genus Cystophora has several coralline epiphytes. This paper describes a small articulated coralline alga, Jania pusilla (Sonder) Yendo, which occurs in profusion on certain species of Cystophora. The alga now known as J. pusilla was first described by Harvey (1863, synop. p. 29) as Corallina nana Lenormand. However, Sonder (1880, p. 21) realized that C nana was a later homonym of a name published by Zanardini (1844, p. -

During the last two years we have not been able to find large abundances of species of microalgae as were described since 2006 and the floristic lists developed in the 90's. This added with the presence to increase both coverage and biomass of invasive species which makes a real threat to consider. -

The Marine Macroalgae of Cabo Verde Archipelago: an Updated Checklist

The marine macroalgae of Cabo Verde archipelago: an updated checklist. Arquipelago. Life and Marine Sciences 36: 39 - 60. An updated list of the names of the marine macroalgae of Cabo Verde, an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean, is presented based on existing reports, and includes the addition of 36 species. The checklist comprises a total of 372 species names, of which 68 are brown algae (Ochrophyta), 238 are red algae (Rhodophyta) and 66 green algae (Chlorophyta). New distribution records reveal the existence of 10 putative endemic species for Cabo Verde islands, nine species that are geographically restricted to the Macaronesia, five species that are restricted to Cabo Verde islands and the nearby Tropical Western African coast, and five species known to occur only in the Maraconesian Islands and Tropical West Africa. Two species, previously considered invalid names, are here validly published as Colaconema naumannii comb. nov. and Sebdenia canariensis sp. nov.
