There are many places to visit nearby, e.g. the Galloway forest park designated as the UK's first dark sky area, with three hundred square miles of outdoor pursuits – walking, fishing, the 7Stanes mountain bike tracks, three visitor centres. There are various golf courses and historic sites within easy reach and beaches as near as forty minutes drive away. The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory is nearby as is the beautiful Loch Ken for many water sports. offers pubs, cafés and a newly opened arts centre. The market town of is about 20 minutes by car offering the usual facilities – supermarket, petrol station etc. as well as an array of interesting independent small shops and cafés. On the outskirts of Castle Douglas you will find the Scottish National Trust's Threave estate. The whole area is fantastic for wildlife – there are red deer observation and (hand!) feeding sites ,red squirrels, a huge success story with red kites which can be seen being fed on a daily basis, a truly amazing sight. The pretty towns of , and Newton Stewart with a lovely little independent cinema are all within easy reach.
