PART I Class Specification for the Class:

HYDROLOGIST-GEOLOGIST I

Duties Summary:

Conducts routine hydrologic-geologic studies and investigations requiring the application of basic hydrologic-geologic principles and techniques, according to specific instructions, and following well-established practices; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the entry level class in the Hydrologist-Geologist series. This class differs from the Hydrologist-Geologist II in that the Hydrologist-Geologist I conducts routine hydrologic­ geologic studies and investigations under specific instructions and following well-established practices whereas the Hydrologist-Geologist II conducts hydrologic-geologic studies and investigations of limited scope and complexity exercising some degree of judgment based on expenence.

Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties. The omission of specific duty statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.)

Under close supervision of a higher level hydrologist-geologist, the Hydrologist-Geologist I:

• Conducts routine studies and investigations requiring the application of basic hydrologic­ geologic principles and techniques following well-established practices.

• Assists in the collection of basic geologic and hydrologic data for establishing long-range plans for the effective and economic development of the water resources of the County of Maui.

• Prepares graphs and charts.

• Collects samples from well drilling and test borings.

• Assists with microscopic and field analyses for composition and geologic structure.

• Collects, collates, and learns techniques of interpretation of water quality data.

• Learns the use and care of hydrologic and geophysical instruments.

• Assists in investigating salt water encroachment into water resources.

• Assists in preparing findings of investigations.

PART II Minimum Qualification Specification for the Class:

HYDROLOGIST-GEOLOGIST I

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in or .

License Requirement: Possession of a valid State of Hawaii driver's license (Type 3).

Knowledge of: the principles and theories of geology and/or hydrology; basic ; ground water geology and hydrology; basic principles of hydraulic and meteorology sources of hydrologic-geologic references.

Ability to: carry out simple and routine tasks in support of higher level professional work; prepare clear and concise reports.

Health and Physical Condition:

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
