This year saw a rather different format from the usual star-studded occasion due to the dictates of the COVID-19 pandemic: to ensure the safety of the artists and the production team, the nominees were showcased to the world in a remote, live broadcast by Univision from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, with breakout performances streamed from other cities throughout Latin America. Despite the lack of a live audience, this year’s performances were no less glamorous, and the stellar line up – which included the likes of Bad Bunny, Camilo, Kany García, J Balvin, Jesse & Joy, Natalia Lafourcade, Ricky Martin, Fito Páez and Carlos Vives all competing for Album Of The Year – were presented in their best light, bringing some much-needed joy and warmth to its worldwide viewing audience. The Awards show’s lighting designer and director, Tom Kenny, operating from the Miami base, chose to enhance the appearance of the artists with the elegance and subtleties of a number of Robert Juliat Dalis 860 LED fixtures. Context from a semiotic perspective is an emerging field which is now taking increasing importance in the area, since recent research has highlighted the relevance of context when communicating in a second language (L2). This study focuses on the ways in which Chilean English language learners use a L2 in order to communicate their real-life experiences, skills and knowledge. The purpose of the study is to understand the functional categories through which context is collectively constructed to facilitate communication in a second language. To develop this study, 18 sessions about various topics were recorded with language learners, participants in each one were three novices and one expert who taught them. Eight of these recordings were selected as meaningful data and thoroughly analysed regarding context making and interaction. Through the analysis, three functional categories were identified as commonly used to establish a common context: learners’ prior knowledge, question/response routines and common sense.

The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.
