Last night’s loss for Rancho is the first time they’ve dropped a game in this ballpark in 2021, as they’re now 7-1. The club swept their only series here at Valley Strong Ballpark back in July, going 6-0. NORTH W L PCT GB Fresno 64 34 .653 - YESTERDAY’S GAME: Visalia broke a 2-2 tie with two in the seventh, then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, holding San Jose 62 36 .633 2 off the Quakes on Wednesday night for their first win of the year over Rancho Cucamonga at Valley Strong Ballpark, 5-2. Glenallen Modesto 54 44 .551 10 Hill, Jr. smacked a tie-breaking homer off Joan Valdez (1-2) in the seventh to give Visalia a 4-2 lead. Trailing 5-2 in the ninth, Rancho Stockton 39 59 .398 25 got consecutive one-out singles from Imanol Vargas and Alex DeJesus, but Sauryn Lao and Edwin Mateo couldn’t continue the rally, as Visalia reliever Hugh Fisher earned his first save by shutting down the would-be rally. Visalia hit three homers on the night, as SOUTH W L PCT GB Ramses Malave and Jeferson Espinal also went deep. Jake Vogel (3rd) provided the Quakes with their lone round-tripper of the game. Rancho Cucamonga 53 44 .546 - Carlos Duran got a no-decision, allowing two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings. Rancho is now 8.5 games out of a playoff spot. Inland Empire 49 49 .500 4.5 MITCH WHITE: Former Quake Mitch White started Tuesday at Visalia and earned his first win in a Rancho uniform since 2017, Lake Elsinore 42 55 .433 11 when he made nine starts for the Quakes. The former Santa Clara Bronco allowed two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, while Visalia 28 70 .286 25.5 striking out eight. White, who’s last appearance prior to Tuesday was last week for the Dodgers, fired 7.1 innings of shutout baseball 2021 PLAYOFF STANDINGS against the Pittsburgh Pirates, earning his first win of the year at the big-league level last Wednesday. Visalia 5 Rancho Cucamonga 2 JORBIT VIVAS MOVIN’ ON UP: The Quakes’ offense continues to take hits to the roster, as infielder Jorbit Vivas is the latest San Jose 7 Lake Elsinore 0 player to head up the ladder, as he was officially promoted to Great Lakes of the High-A Central League on Wednesday. Vivas had an Inland Empire 3 Stockton 1 MVP-caliber season, batting .311 with 13 home runs and 73 RBIs over 83 games and 328 at-bats. Vivas is the fourth offensive player promoted to Great Lakes this year, joining Brandon Lewis, Jonny DeLuca and Eddys Leonard. Combine that with the loss of catcher TODAY’S GAMES Diego Cartaya and the Quakes’ offense has really undergone some dramatic changes over the last two months. Rancho Cucamonga at Visalia, 6:00 PM PLAYOFF UPDATE!: The 2021 Playoffs will look and feel differently than any other year, as this year’s edition will see the top two San Jose at Lake Elsinore, 6:35 PM teams compete in a championship series, regardless of division. The Fresno Grizzlies currently have the best record in the league and Modesto at Fresno, 6:50 PM have just a two-game lead over San Jose, who would be the #2 seed. Rancho, losers of six of their last eight, has fallen to fourth place Inland Empire at Stockton, 7:05 PM overall, currently 8.5 games behind San Jose. With San Jose winning the season-long series (10-2) over Rancho, the Quakes must have a better record overall, so the San Jose lead is more like a 9.5 game advantage. Rancho Cucamonga at Visalia, 6:00 PM NICK NASTRINI: Former UCLA Bruin Nick Nastrini makes just his second start for the Quakes and his first against Visalia. Modesto at Fresno, 6:50 PM Nastrini’s Rancho debut came at LoanMart Field on August 19th, when he allowed one run on one hit (leadoff home run to open the Inland Empire at Stockton, 7:05 PM game) and struck out five while walking one over 1.2 innings in a no-decision. Nastrini was just drafted this past July in the fourth San Jose at Lake Elsinore, 7:05 PM round of the 2021 draft out of UCLA. He’s expected to be followed by fellow 2021 draft pick, Emmett Sheehan. JUNIOR MIESES: Visalia will send Junior Mieses to the mound in game three, as he makes his 19th appearance and 12th start, 2021 QUAKES AT A GLANCE his third appearance and second start against Rancho in 2021. In his two prior games against the Quakes, Mieses is 1-1 with a 5.87 1st Half Record: 32-27 ERA, allowing five runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings with ten strikeouts and five walks. In his last game overall, Mieses allowed one 2nd Half Record: 21-17 run on just four hits over five innings in a no-decision versus Fresno on August 20th.
