Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 Dear Reader Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 Dear Reader, For we Hungarians, this year is not only about national remembrance, but also about togetherness. Not forgetting the hundred-year-old tragedy of history, we can draw strength from the fact that as a state and as a nation, we have proved to be stronger than those who wished to tear us apart. Looking ahead into the future, now in late summer, early autumn, with grapes ripening, the timeless words of Sán- dor Márai echo within us: “during harvest, Hungary looks as if was being described in a poem by Vörösmarty: stern, masculine, at the same time, dreamy, atoned and hopeful.” The fourth Wine of the Hungarian Parliament competition nominates the best white, red and rosé wines of the Carpathian Basin. In our ever changing world, the competitive strength of a country, of a nation lies within its capacity for renewal. Hungarian winemaking exemplifies this strength: while respecting centuries-old traditions, it was able to constantly renew itself, providing an example of organic development that merges the past, the present and the future. Our wine competition supports and promotes this timelessness, capacity for renewal and quality. The award- winning wines represent our wine culture in worthy fashion in the home of Hungarian legislation, contributing to the improvement of our nation’s self-regard and reputation. Hungarian wine connects us with one another as well as with other nations and the whole wide world. László Kövér Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 For the fourth time this year the Speaker of the National Assembly announced a wine selection event with the aim of picking top quality Hungarian wines as protocol wines of the House. Due to the pandemic, many international and local competitions have been cancelled this year, therefore the Wine of the Hungarian Parliament was an especially important event for winemakers. Apart from the usual categories (furmint, hárs- levelű, olaszrizling, and other whites, cabernet franc, kékfrankos, bikavér, tokaji aszú), this year there was an option to nominate rosé wines as well. 231 wines from 18 wine regions were judged by the jury consisting of the crème of local wine connoisseurs. Wines coming from the Balaton Uplands wine region, the Tokaj, Villány and Szekszárd wine regions achieved first place in multiple categories. The Balaton Uplands wine region The most notable regions producing white wine in Hungary are located north of Lake Balaton, on the southern slopes of the hills stretching to the lake shore, where the sunshine reflected from the surface of the water ripens the grapes. The eastern part of the region is characterised by Triassic limestone, marl, Pannonian sandstone and loess soils, with the most famous full-bodied, succulent and high-acidity wines produced on the basalt ridge of relatively young volcanic hills in the central parts. The Balaton Uplands wine region is officially divided into three subregions: Balatonfüred–Csopak, Balaton Uplands and Badacsony. The main grape variety of all three sub-regions is olaszrizling, which although not particularly characteristic, is nonetheless recognisable, with abundantly pleasant and fresh acids. In addition, notable wines are also made from pinot gris, traminer, juhfark and kéknyelű. Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2020 The Tokaj wine region Located in the north-eastern part of the country, the Tokaj wine region is the gem of Hungarian winemaking. The world famous tokaji aszú (noble rot wine) is also made here. The sugar content is concentrated in the individually collected, raisined noble rot grapes, but thanks to the slightly cool, special climate, the acid content also remains high, resulting in elegant, unique wines. The best terroirs are to be found on the southern slope of the Zemplén mountains. Owing to the technological developments of the last thirty years, high quality white wines have also started to emerge from the region, bottled in characteristic and unique bottles. Traditionally, furmint, hárslevelű and muscat blanc were cultivated here. The kabar, zéta and kövérszőlő varieties joined them a few years ago. The Villány and Szekszárd wine regions These two standalone wine regions are both located in the southern part of Hungary, in an area where the most wonderful red wines come from. Thanks to a degree of Mediterranean influence, Villány is home to full-bodied, heavy red wines. Szekszárd, with its colder climate and loess soil, is better known for its lighter-bodied, fruitier and often, more elegant reds. The cultivation of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and syrah has spread across Villány. Villány wines, which well deserve their fame all over the world, are produced by blending the aforementioned varieties. Cabernet franc from this region is a single-variety wine of outstanding quality, already known as Villányi Franc in the local origin protection system. Szekszárd is proud of its fruity reds with an exciting acid-tannin balance. Grape varieties iconic to the region are kékfrankos and kadarka. The flagship wine of the region is Szekszárdi Bikavér, which is a unique blend, based on the aforementioned two varieties and other red grapes. The winery and the cellar, designed by Ferenc Heimann, was built in the summer of 2001 and has been in constant development ever since. The building, which accommodates modern and traditional winemaking technology, blends in with the spirit of the thousand-year-old Balaton landscape, and with its fantastic panorama creates an exceptional atmosphere. The winery has grown to 3.5 hectares, and under the professional guidance of winemaker Ambrus Bakó it leverages the opportunities that lie in the unique wine production area. Since 2015, the exceptional wines, as well as seasonal, homely dishes made from local ingredients can be tasted all year round on the special, cosy terrace. OLASZRIZLING BIRTOKVÁLOGATÁS 2017 A rich and honest wine, made from handpicked grapes under a 1.5 kg vine load. One part of it is aged in a steel container for 6 months, the rest in barrique barrels filled to their third, also for 6 months. Its colour is straw yellow, with the dominant yet subtle aromas of melon, kiwi, pineapple. Upon tasting, one can unravel mature characteristics, which gently embrace the unctuos mouthfeel and flavours coming from the grapes. It is a textbook example of conscious maturing technology, that demonstrate the processing of fairly ripe ingredients, and technological opportunities applied depending on content. Furmint category MAD WINE WINERY The goal of Mad Wine Winery is to present the unique terroir of Mád through high quality wines. Currently, they own 20 hectares of land, a significant part of which is first- class vineyards. Most of the work is done in 11 vineyards, especially in Mád, but they also have a vineyard in both Tarcal and Tállya. They specifically chose vineyards that were considered to have the greatest potential in the wine region since the vineyard classification in the 1700’s. They strove to produce a village-level wine, which boasts the mineral character of the Mád territory, is easy to consume and complies with the highest of quality requirements, while making it possible for an even wider consumer group to become familiar with the characteristics of the village. MAD FURMINT SELECTION 2017 This is a dry white wine, which expresses the greatness of Mád production sites and where the mineral character of the historical vineyards is on display with exceptional depth, owing to the selected, high-quality ingredients. Furmint is a decisive component, paired with the kindness and fruitiness of hárslevelű. Partial barrel ageing contributes to the complex structure, with the spicy notes of the barrel harmoniously complementing the ripe fruity and mineral notes. Boasting a complex acid structure, it is a full-bodied wine with a long finish. Other whites category ISTVÁNDY WINERY Istvándy Winery is a third-generation winery from the Ba- dacsony wine region. The family intends to attach a greater role to the kéknyelű variety in the future of the winery. The young winemaker, Gergely Istvándy has been organising a professional symposium called “Tasting Kéknyelű” for other growers of kéknyelű since 2017. Their credo: Istvándy wines are timeless in style. They are characterised by simplicity, elegance and naturalness.

Acta Acad. Paed. A cikk a sok évszázados egri borkultúra történetének rövid összefoglalását adja. Ismerteti a máig legis- mertebb, emblematikus itteni borfajta, az egri bikavér nevének eredetét és min Ę- ségének alakulását a kezdetekt Ęl máig. A borvidék viharos története magában foglalja a török id Ęk alatti hosszú tetszhalott állapotot, majd az újjáéledést, a diktatúra alatti hanyatlást és a rendszerváltás utáni megújulás, a magas igény Ħ, min Ęségi borkultúra id Ęszakát. „Eger is the town of grapes and wine” – that is what can be read when ap- proaching the town from the direction of Budapest. The town of historical past, baroque monuments is famous for not only its fortress, churches, medicinal thermal bath, but also for its wines, mostly Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) as a result of its inhabitants’ conscious, industrious activity. The one thousand year old town – a bishop’s centre established by St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king in 1004 – has always been connected to grape growing to some extent and way. Although during the ninety-year long Turkish occupation (from Oct. 1596 to Dec. 1687) the region declined a lot mostly due to the emigration of the inha- bitants, lack of industrious hands in the Middle ages Eger and its surroundings mostly produced white wine. Since the 18th century it has been unambiguous that the main activity of Eger has become grape growing.

  • Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader
Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader, Three years ago, with the intention of creating a tradition, we announced the wine tasting event we named The Wine of the Hungarian Parliament. We did this in order to encourage guests who attend official National Assembly events at the House of Parliament - this historical site of Hungarian legislation - to learn more about the finest vintages of historical Hungarian wine regions and winemakers, and thus take our good reputation home with them all over the world. Even though the saying goes, “good wine needs no bush”, we know that in times of ever new and developing technical innovation becoming part of our everyday lives, quality assurance is gaining an even more important role. Only products that comply with the increasing rigour of quality requirements can be successful in the long run. In addition to the Hungarian legislation providing a legal environment to promote quality winemaking, it is the goal of our wine tasting event to stimulate high-standards in the Hungarian wine trade, to consolidate the good reputation of and provide further opportunities for those who love wine. The previous three years have proved that this initiative can withstand the test of time: this year, we have received a record 113 applications from wineries from all over the Carpathian Basin. Noblesse oblige. May our winners serve as representatives and advertisers of centuries-old Hungarian viticulture, its quality and spirit, in Hungary and beyond. László Kövér Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 This year the Speaker of the National Assembly announced the third in the series of competitions entitled the Wine of the Hungarian Parliament.

  • Scientific Approach to the Strategy of the Vine & Wine
SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE STRATEGY OF THE VINE & WINE SECTOR WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE MÁTRAALJA WINE REGION Dr. MAGDA, SÁNDOR - Dr. GERGELY, SÁNDOR SUMMARY The essential objects of the present study are the description of the strategic aspects of the vine & wine sector and the detailed analysis of the Mátraalja wine region (MWR), which is Hungary s largest mountain-slope wine growing area. A questionnaire assessment served as a basis for the study, within the framework of which the managers of MWR wine confraternities were asked questions about the parameters of their respective wine confraternities, and their opinions of the present situation of the latter, along with the possibilities of de veloping them. Further issues examined were: the required development of infrastructure, including the inadequate wine-processing, storage and bottling capacities, their qualitative and quantitative characteristics, and the possibilities of establishing them; the establishment of an advisory system to serve vine growers’ interests; the possibilities of establishing a regional plant protection and weather forecast system, and its prospective effects on profitability and environmental protection. Finally, the structure of grape varieties, the aspects of creating a potential leading wine and of its marketing, the establishment of competitive wineries, the implementation of a system of trade and logistics based on Internet, and the effective realisation of marketing coordinated by the MWR Wine Commercial House were examined. The present study does not contain all tables and charts compiled by the authors but draws conclusions from them. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS settlements of Heves county, the settlements Vác, Mogyoród, Rákosliget- The authors want to thank the Királydomb and Rózsahegy-Báróhegy Council and the leaders of the 25 MWR situated in Pest county, and Pásztó wine confraternities for giving assistance situated in Nógrád county.

On a world scale, a huge concentration could be observed in viticulture and wine production during the last few decades. According to Kym Anderson [2003] the development of global wine market may be put at the 1990s. In the traditional European wine producing countries collaborations and integra- tions, as conditions for the safe operation of the sector, had been formed some decades before. Cooperation is necessary, because in many cases, only it can solve or mitigate the issues from global challenges. In our times assertion of interests and minimizing costs are becoming increasingly important, in which different forms of cooperation can provide great help. This study is intended to show what kind of collaborations can be noticed in the wine production of Hungary, and which form of cooperation could be the best one to manage the current professional issues. It examines how to adapt the basic principles of integrations that have achieved success abroad. The topicality of this matter is strengthened by the fact that Zsolt Feldman [2016] ranks the elaboration of inter-trade agreements, which can be the first step of cooperation by all means, amongst the most important tasks of the sector based on the FM-HNT partnership.

UNIVERSITY OF PANNONIA Georgikon Faculty KESZTHELY Doctoral School of Crop Production and Horticultural Sciences PhD THESIS Application and development of detection methods of grape viruses in the survey of virus infection of vineyards Melinda Apró (PhD candidate) Supervisor(s): Dr. habil. András Péter Takács Associate professor Director of Institute KESZTHELY 2016 BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH In recent years not only the number of grape varieties have risen, but their parasitic pathogens have increased as well, and these pathogens have caused harm. Knowing the biology of these pathogens, the practice of modern production technologies and the use of different pesticides all enable us to defend fungous and bacterial diseases adequately. The protection against diseases caused by phytoplasma and viruses is possible with the prevention of pathogens. Up to the present more than 60 plant viruses have been found to infect grapevines. In the Hungarian vineyards 17 grape viruses have been identified so far. In Hungary the grape virological research was started by János Lehoczky and his colleagues in 1960. These researches mainly focused on the identification of pathogens and their ways of living. The aim of this work is to continue grape virological researches previously started by the Institution of Plant Protection of Pannon University. Moreover, this work aims to shed light on the spread of grapevine virus occurrence in Hungarian vineyards. Furthermore: - the molecular analysis of the Hungarian GLRaV-3 isolate, which is a worldwide grapevine virus causing leaf-roll - the diagnoses of the origin and the degree of kinship of isolates - the data of isolates in GenBanks.
