  • The History of Viticulture and Viniculture in Eger
Acta Acad. Paed. Agriensis, Sectio Pericemonologica XXXV (2008) 47–52 The history of viticulture and viniculture in Eger Csaba Csutorás and László Rácz Eszterházy Károly College Abstract: Az egri sz ĘlĘ- és borkultúra története. A cikk a sok évszázados egri borkultúra történetének rövid összefoglalását adja. Ismerteti a máig legis- mertebb, emblematikus itteni borfajta, az egri bikavér nevének eredetét és min Ę- ségének alakulását a kezdetekt Ęl máig. A borvidék viharos története magában foglalja a török id Ęk alatti hosszú tetszhalott állapotot, majd az újjáéledést, a diktatúra alatti hanyatlást és a rendszerváltás utáni megújulás, a magas igény Ħ, min Ęségi borkultúra id Ęszakát. „Eger is the town of grapes and wine” – that is what can be read when ap- proaching the town from the direction of Budapest. The town of historical past, baroque monuments is famous for not only its fortress, churches, medicinal thermal bath, but also for its wines, mostly Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) as a result of its inhabitants’ conscious, industrious activity. The one thousand year old town – a bishop’s centre established by St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king in 1004 – has always been connected to grape growing to some extent and way. Although during the ninety-year long Turkish occupation (from Oct. 1596 to Dec. 1687) the region declined a lot mostly due to the emigration of the inha- bitants, lack of industrious hands in the Middle ages Eger and its surroundings mostly produced white wine. Since the 18th century it has been unambiguous that the main activity of Eger has become grape growing.

  • Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader
Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader, Three years ago, with the intention of creating a tradition, we announced the wine tasting event we named The Wine of the Hungarian Parliament. We did this in order to encourage guests who attend official National Assembly events at the House of Parliament - this historical site of Hungarian legislation - to learn more about the finest vintages of historical Hungarian wine regions and winemakers, and thus take our good reputation home with them all over the world. Even though the saying goes, “good wine needs no bush”, we know that in times of ever new and developing technical innovation becoming part of our everyday lives, quality assurance is gaining an even more important role. Only products that comply with the increasing rigour of quality requirements can be successful in the long run. In addition to the Hungarian legislation providing a legal environment to promote quality winemaking, it is the goal of our wine tasting event to stimulate high-standards in the Hungarian wine trade, to consolidate the good reputation of and provide further opportunities for those who love wine. The previous three years have proved that this initiative can withstand the test of time: this year, we have received a record 113 applications from wineries from all over the Carpathian Basin. Noblesse oblige. May our winners serve as representatives and advertisers of centuries-old Hungarian viticulture, its quality and spirit, in Hungary and beyond. László Kövér Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 This year the Speaker of the National Assembly announced the third in the series of competitions entitled the Wine of the Hungarian Parliament.

  • Scientific Approach to the Strategy of the Vine & Wine
SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE STRATEGY OF THE VINE & WINE SECTOR WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE MÁTRAALJA WINE REGION Dr. MAGDA, SÁNDOR - Dr. GERGELY, SÁNDOR SUMMARY The essential objects of the present study are the description of the strategic aspects of the vine & wine sector and the detailed analysis of the Mátraalja wine region (MWR), which is Hungary s largest mountain-slope wine growing area. A questionnaire assessment served as a basis for the study, within the framework of which the managers of MWR wine confraternities were asked questions about the parameters of their respective wine confraternities, and their opinions of the present situation of the latter, along with the possibilities of de veloping them. Further issues examined were: the required development of infrastructure, including the inadequate wine-processing, storage and bottling capacities, their qualitative and quantitative characteristics, and the possibilities of establishing them; the establishment of an advisory system to serve vine growers’ interests; the possibilities of establishing a regional plant protection and weather forecast system, and its prospective effects on profitability and environmental protection. Finally, the structure of grape varieties, the aspects of creating a potential leading wine and of its marketing, the establishment of competitive wineries, the implementation of a system of trade and logistics based on Internet, and the effective realisation of marketing coordinated by the MWR Wine Commercial House were examined. The present study does not contain all tables and charts compiled by the authors but draws conclusions from them. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS settlements of Heves county, the settlements Vác, Mogyoród, Rákosliget- The authors want to thank the Királydomb and Rózsahegy-Báróhegy Council and the leaders of the 25 MWR situated in Pest county, and Pásztó wine confraternities for giving assistance situated in Nógrád county.

BUDAPESTI CORVINUS EGYETEM (BUDAPEST CORVINUS UNIVERSITY) THE POSSIBILITIES FOR THE QUALITY DEVELOPMENT OF EGRI BIKAVÉR Doctoral dissertation theses GÁL LAJOS Prepared at the Department of Enology of Budapest Corvinus University BUDAPEST, 2006 PhD School/Program Name: PhD School of Food Science Field: Food Science Head: Prof. András Fekete Corvinus University of Budapest Supervisor: Prof. Miklós Kállay Department of Enology Faculty of Food Science Corvinus University of Budapest The applicant met the requirement of the PhD regulations of the Corvinus University of Budapest and the thesis is accepted for the defence process. Budapest, 2006. 04. 10. ……….……………………. .…………………………... Signature of Head of School Signature of Supervisor 1. INTRODUCTION AND THE AIM OF THE WORK Egri Bikavér is one of the best-known Hungarian red wines. From among the same-named wines produced in Hungary, the largest amount sold is this wine, annually between 75 - 85 thousand hl. Neither the origins of the name of the wine, nor the circumstances of its production and the use of varieties have yet been fully clarified. SUGÁR (1981) puts the attachment of the name bikavér to Eger wines around 1851, quoting from the Book of Hungarian Sayings published in 1851: “Bikavér (…) this is what the strong red wine, for instance that from Eger, is called.” Szekszárdians like to quote Garay János, who wrote the two words “bika” and “vér” in one word for the first time, in one of his poems, in 1846. During the course of its history, the judgement of Egri Bikavér was very diverse both on the producers’ side, as well as with respect to the quality expected by the consumers.

  • Immunohistopathological Study of Listeria Monocytogenes Infection in Pregnant Mice
Acta Microbiologica et Immunologica Hungarica, 52 (Suppl.), pp. 1–184 (2005) IMMUNOHISTOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES INFECTION IN PREGNANT MICE MAJA ABRAM, DARINKA VUČKOVIĆ, MARINA BUBONJA, MILJENKO DORIĆ Department of Microbiology, Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka, Braće Branchetta 20, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive, facultative intracellular pathogen that can cause severe food-borne infections in humans and animals. Pregnant women, neonates, the elderly, and debilitated or immunocompromised patients in general are predominantly affected, although the disease can also develop in normal individuals. Using a murine model of pregnancy-associated listeriosis we have done a careful analysis of the host immune response to L. monocytogenes infection. We studied the kinetics of bacterial clearance, histopathological changes in maternal and fetal tissues, as well as cy- tokine/chemokine pattern during the course of L. monocytogenes infection. Pregnant BALB/c mice challenged intravenously (i.v.) showed failure of maternal anti-listerial im- mune response at the systemic (significantly reduced serum IFN-g levels) and local level (reduced expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the liver tissue), leading to devastating necrotizing hemorrhagic hepatitis. The insufficient maternal immune response also facilitated listerial multiplication in the placenta and, ultimately, in the fetus. Placental infection was characterized by large, hemorrhagic necrosis and numerous bacterial clusters. However, the inflammatory reaction in the placenta was confined to single granulocytes, while T-cells and other cellular elements necessary for effective antilisterial defence were absent. During the course of infection, TNF-a, and occasion- ally, IFN-g were transcribed in placental tissue. Increased placental levels of these anti-listerial cyto- kines were not sufficient to control bacterial growth, but may eventually contribute to spontaneous fetal loss and poor pregnancy outcome.

  • Wine Marketing - Tools for Innovation, Creativity and Sustainability
Wine Marketing - Tools for Innovation, Creativity and Sustainability Gabriella Soós1, Lóránt Dávid2, 1)-2) Eszterházy Károly University College Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences Eszterházy tér 1, Eger, H-3300 Hungary E-mail: [email protected]; E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Hungary is a wine-producing country, with a long tradition of winemaking. Yet, in comparison with other wine- producing countries, the effectiveness of wine production and marketing is significantly lower. To increase the competitiveness of both the nation and the sector is essential; to achieve this, appropriate marketing tools and strategies are necessary. However, due to the special features of the products and the sector, only a few of the usual marketing tools can be used effectively. A new portfolio of tools and methodologies is required, and there is also a need for a co-operation of stakeholders within the sector to use them effectively. Several marketing innovations can be useful at multiple levels – but their unique characteristics need to be taken into account. This study aims to introduce marketing tools used and to-be-developed in the wine sector; the minimal conditions to use them effectively and their impact on consumers, on the region and on the economy. Keywords wine sector, marketing innovation, marketing tools, sustainability, wine tourism, brand JEL Classification M310 Marketing Introduction Wine production and -sales represent a significant “growth-sector” with a huge potential in Hungary. However, there are still significant unexploited opportunities in the fields of product development, modernisation of production technologies, the use up-to-date marketing tools and the development of new ones.
