OutHouse Collective

OutHouse Collective are an exciting and innovative associate theatre company of the Roundhouse, . We are a group of young emerging artists.

We have our own technical team who work closely with the performers and director throughout the devising process. We work collaboratively, utilising combined skills to create new ensemble based theatre that works to challenge audience expectations of traditional scripted work.

As an artist driven ensemble we look outside the mainstream. We believe in playing, inventing and testing ourselves and our audience; in the power of storytelling; in theatrical alchemy.

We want to tell small stories in incredible ways and big stories simply. We want to expand our horizons, to show you our imaginations and to enjoy life, adventure and artistry.

History

Formed in 2009 as the first Roundhouse Theatre Company, we worked closely with director Jim Pope and writer Philip Osment to create ‘Your Number’s Up’.

We were lucky enough to perform this at the Assembly Rooms George Street as part of the Edinburgh Fringe 2009, selling out numerous performances and receiving several “★★★★” star reviews and an NSDF nomination.

In 2010 we collaborated with director Elgiva Field to create ‘A Neon Fairytale’, a surreal and macabre world of fairy tales with gruesome endings.

We were one of only six European companies selected to be a part of Contacting the World 2010 at Manchester Contact Theatre and went on to perform a series of sell out shows at the Camden Fringe Festival.

In fact ‘A Neon Fairytale’ was the second highest grossing production at the Camden Fringe Festival in 2010.

2011 has seen OutHouse Collective joining forces with director Dominic McHale for a newly devised production ‘Proper Night’.

’Your Number’s Up’ – 2009

Camden: magic circus or sleazy cesspit? A man lies comatose in the street. Nine people gather round. Was it fate that brought them together or were they just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Shortlisted to the final five for the NSDF Award with commendations for performance going to company members Angus Scott Miller and Piers Robinson.

‘A Neon Fairytale’

The Slam has thrown sacred bedtime to waste.

Beautiful maiden finds Prince Charming and they live happily ever after; that's the fairytale right? But what happens when that story book romance consumes and overwhelms, when desire turns dark and when love becomes a very unhealthy obsession?

A princess awakes to find her world has stopped turning; all she needs is a bedtime story to restart it. Trapped between asleep and awake, night and day our Princess is lost with only a red balloon to guide her.

Press Reaction

“★★★★” – British Theatre Guide

“★★★★” – The Stage

“★★★★” – Manchester Review

“The Roundhouse's inaugural theatre company have produced a frank, comic and thoughtful play that covers a lot of ground. The back-stories and calamities of the ten characters survey a myriad of issues: racial profiling; incest; gender inequality; destiny; lesbianism. At moments the writer inflects the gaze upon himself, making fun of theatrical cliché and artifice. The effect is a sense of playfulness that allows the play's comedy and pathos to be fully embraced.”

‘Your Number’s Up’ - “Offers a surfeit of concerns and intents without ever seeming over- loaded. The writing is adroit, in-touch and often hilarious. The direction allows the strands of the narrative to mesh seamlessly: scene transitions are swift, conversations overlap, and characters clamber over (and onto) one another.

To single out individual performances would be to do a disservice to the collective excellence. Each cast member optimizes the vitality of their character; there is a sense of balance and proportion, and thus maturity.

This is a promising debut from a company obese with talent. At the end of the show, being utterly enamoured, I wished to take the cast home with me and make them lunch. But then I remembered that if I were to do this I would most likely get stabbed, become pregnant or contract pubic lice.” - Ben Aitken, The British Theatre Guide.

“Cleverly tracking back in time - with some dark secrets being revealed in the process - we discover that this is not the first time this crowd have crossed paths. Exploring the controversial topics of illegal immigration, rape, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy amid scenes of adolescent confusion, this production also aims to raise awareness of the sensitive issue of knife crime, a widespread problem on the streets of north London.

Slick scene integration, some audience interaction and a youthful cast bring humour to the serious subject matter, injecting a lighter tone to what could otherwise become an all-too-gritty experience.” - Mark Petrie,

The List.

‘A Neon Fairytale’ – “The planet has been divided. No longer do we spin on an axis under sunrise and sunset. The world has been knocked off kilter and the planet has been divided. There now exists the Flare Zone and the Dark Zone which has left the world separated.

‘OutHouse Collective’ – “One of only twelve international companies selected to perform at Contacting the World international theatre festival 2010, ‘A Neon Fairytale’ made audiences search inside themselves on what they perceive as dangerous, entertaining and comical. Premiered at Contact Theatre Manchester, then performed as part of the Camden Fringe Festival at the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm.” - Manchester Review.

‘Proper Night’

Proper Night is the third instalment from OutHouse Collective and is a collaboration with writer and director Dominic McHale. Over several months, meeting once weekly, the actors created characters which were strengthened through improvisation and various excursions in and around London. From this a story emerged and basic scenarios were drip fed to the actors who reacted and improvised in character which led to the ultimate finished scenes.

A group of young people meet. They're up for it but out of their comfort zone. They don't know each other yet but that's OK. They just want a proper night. Dancing. Partying. Getting wrecked. Taking risks. Everyone's invited...

Influenced by Mike Leigh, David Mamet and combined with surrealism, gallows humour and the dark side OutHouse Collective aim to experiment with the idea of taking too much of a good thing to its extreme.
