Anello Building THE ANELLO BUILDING

A window of opportunity has enabled the residential conversion of this beautiful warehouse building. Believed to have been originally built by De Havilland for the manufacture of aircraft parts it then became the home of Anello & Davide the theatrical shoe manufacturers. For many years designing and hand making for the endless list of stars of stage and screen. This design was beautifully adapted to become the iconic Beatle boot that all the pop bands favoured and produced the Saturday morning, famously long queues to the A&D shops in Drury Lane. Following the sale of Anello & Davide, the building was let to a photographic library which then evolved into Getty Images. The timely cessation of their lease has contributed to this warehouse’s further metamorphosis. A number of enduring architectural virtues at The Anello Building reflect the fresh modern thinking of the 1930s. Flanked by a pair of elegant stairwell towers, the exterior shines with the huge factory windows that are so reminiscent of the era, and that provide a rich foundation for the contemporary lofts within. Tottenham Court Road THE BUILDING

It would be impossible to find a warehouse of this size for residential conversion in such a prominent location in Camden. These undeveloped 1930s warehouses have all but disappeared in London in general. It’s high ceilings and large windows front and back gives the building amazing light and volume. Anello has three stair cores each with a lift. The concrete stair construction has been left naked, only sealed and the Art Deco steel handrails have been paint stripped and lacquered. New plastered walls with shadow gaps provide a contemporary contrast all the while paying homage to the industrial character. Apartments served by the side stair cores enjoy lifts arriving directly in to their private demised lift lobbies. It is enclosed front and rear by contemporary Red Cedar walls and you enter to the front by an galvanised steel and glass entrance screen. Evergreen Oaks tower over the front wall poised to give a natural high buffer to the world outside. The Oaks are under planted with Photinias, Osmanthus and scented Azaleas. You have arrived in the Anello Oasis. The Central Entrance, with a galvanised steel glass screen, displays photographic exhibitions that could be made available to residents for purchase. Its backlit floating walls give a changing mood from day to night.
