National Harbor’s Second Annual World Peeps Eating Championship

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., April 14, 2017— The No. 2-ranked competitive eater in the world Matt Stonie (San Jose, California,) and No. 11-ranked Juliet Lee (Germantown, Maryland,) returned to National Harbor with 9 other professional eaters to compete at the Second Annual National Harbor Peeps Day, which was held on April 8. Stonie won the event by eating 255 Peeps in five minutes, breaking his own World Record of 200 Peeps set last year at the same event. Along with bragging rights, Matt Stonie took home a Peep-filled trophy and $1750. Lee, the highest-ranked woman competing in the event, devoured 165 of the sugar-coated marshmallow Easter treats, beating her record of 140 Peeps eaten last year.

The National Harbor World Peeps Eating Contest took place in front of the Peeps & Company store. The event is sanctioned by Major League Eating, the world body that oversees professional eating contests including Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. Major League Eating and National Harbor also held an Amateur Peeps Eating Contest prior to the main event, where 15 entrants from the general public volunteered to see who could eat 25 Peeps the fastest.

1st – Matt Stonie, eating 255 Peeps in 5 minutes. 2nd – Geoffrey Esper, 238 3rd – Carmen Cincotti, 170 4th – Juliet Lee, 165 5th – Gideon Oji, 155 6th – Kevin Ambs, 113 7th -Yasir Salem, 110 8th – Crazy Legs Conti, 70 9th – Mike Deitz and Sarah Reinecke, 67 11th – William Myers, 47.

The Peeps & Company store at National Harbor was the first in the country and there are only two others. Peeps (the popular marshmallow candies shaped like chicks and bunnies) have become an iconic symbol of spring.
