In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. The Structural Fragmentation in Zwilich's Millennium Fantasy
The structural fragmentation in Zwilich’s Millennium Fantasy Kheng K. Koay* Abstract This study explores Zwilich’s Millennium Fantasy (2000), which not only exemplifies the nature of Zwilich’s personal creativity, but also reveals different musical influences on the composer. In her music Zwilich employs a variety of techniques to promote different playful impressions and surprises. The continuous playing of tricks on listeners throughout the two movements is one of the musical characters of the piece. In most cases, the sense of fragmentation created in the composition also results from Zwilich’s playful musical construction. In addition, jazz, popular and traditional idioms are nicely and evenly treated in the composition; the composition is not confined to one musical style. This piece might serve as a model of the perfect balance which Zwilich strikes between traditional and popular styles. Resumo Este estudo aborda a Fantasia Milênio (2000), de Zwilich, obra que exemplifica a natureza da criatividade pessoal da compositora e revela diversas influências musicais. Na sua música Zwilich emprega uma variedade de técnicas para promover diferentes impressões lúdicas e surpresas. O jogo contínuo de truques sobre ouvintes ao longo dos dois movimentos é uma das características da peça musical. Na maioria dos casos, o sentido de fragmentação criado na composição também resulta da construção de musical lúdica de Zwilich. Além disso, o jazz, idiomas populares e tradicionais são tratados com destreza na composição, que não se confina em um estilo musical. Essa peça pode servir como um modelo do equilíbrio com que Zwilich maneja estilos tradicionais e populares. -

JUNI 2016 IM STAATSTHEATER NÜRNBERG Konzeption und Leitung: Anno Mungen (Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater der Universität Bayreuth) Johann Casimir Eule (Staatstheater Nürnberg) In Zusammenarbeit mit LEICHTE MUSE IM WANDEL DER ZEITEN : GRUSSWORT : LEICHTE MUSE IM WANDEL DER ZEITEN GRUSSWORT Wohl kaum eine Stadt in Deutschland ist mit der Ideologie des Natio- nalsozialismus so eng verbunden wie Nürnberg. Die damaligen Städtischen Bühnen waren bei den Reichsparteitagen durch ihre räumliche Nähe zu den täglichen Aufmärschen vor Adolf Hitlers Residenz im Hotel Deutscher Hof und durch Festaufführungen u. a. von „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ Teil einer politischen Inszenierung und standen nicht nur in dieser Zeit im besonderen Blickpunkt der NS-Führung. Die Aufarbeitung dieser Zeit, der Verbindung von Politik und Kunst und damit der Rolle unseres Opernhauses in der NS-Diktatur ist uns ein großes Anliegen. Ich freue mich daher sehr, dass wir das Forschungsinstitut für Musik- theater Bayreuth und seinen Leiter Prof. Dr. Anno Mungen gewinnen konnten, ein Forschungsprojekt ins Leben zu rufen, das die Rolle des Theaters aber auch die Funktion von theatralen Inszenierungen in Nürnberg in der NS-Zeit untersuchen wird. Dieses Forschungsprojekt „Inszenierung von Macht und Unterhaltung. Propaganda und Musiktheater in Nürnberg 1920-1950“ wurde bereits 2014 ins Leben gerufen und erhielt 2016 die Zusage für eine Förderung durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). In Zusammenarbeit zwi- schen dem Staatstheater Nürnberg, dem Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater und dem Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitage werden die Ergebnisse 2018 in einer Ausstellung der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. -

Many girls self-identify as tomboys, yet little is known about their experiences. Tomboys deviate from gender stereotypes; they also may be more highly aware of gender status differences. Because tomboys may feel different from others and more keenly feel the lower status of their gender group, they may suffer from lower levels of self-esteem. Yet many tomboys also tend to participate in athletics, an activity that often leads to higher levels of self-esteem. Two studies sought to disentangle the interactive effects of tomboy identification and athleticism on self-esteem. Study 1 sampled 144 female undergraduates and Study 2 sampled 66 girls aged from 8 to 13. -
