La religion du marché 195 Notes 199 Bibliographie 219 Index 245 ix préFace à La deuxième édition Depuis sa publication, il y a dix ans, ce livre a fait l’objet d’abondants commentaires, le plus souvent positifs, et parfois critiques, mais ils n’ont pas cessé, ce qui me semble bon signe. S’il est grandement sti- mulant de savoir qu’il continue de trouver de nouveaux lecteurs, cela crée pourtant des obligations pour l’auteur. Les années qui ont suivi la publication de ce livre ont vu paraître de nouveaux travaux sur les échanges culturels le long de la Route de la soie et quiconque aborde la question pour la première fois par un tel survol mérite de trouver des sources mises à jour s’il ou elle souhaite aller plus loin. Je me ré- jouis donc d’avoir eu l’occasion de préparer cette édition revue, dix ans après la première. Le titre ne devrait laisser planer aucun doute : il s’agit ici d’une approche générale de la question. J’ai tenté de tracer le portrait de 2000 ans d’histoire de l’Asie à partir d’un élément central, soit le mou- vement des idées religieuses et leur transformation, en cherchant à produire un récit qui informe les lecteurs tout en restant accessible. J’ai opté pour la présentation d’un schéma global plutôt que de cher- cher à résoudre certains contentieux sur des points précis. Je laisse ces questions aux spécialistes des nombreux domaines auxquels ce livre fait inévitablement appel. Je n’ai jamais prétendu être un expert de l’une de ces disciplines, préférant faire appel à ceux et celles qui s’y connaissent mieux que moi plutôt que d’empiéter sur leurs champs d’expertise respectifs, un peu à la manière des voyageurs de la Route de la soie qui, inévitablement, xi devaient solliciter la bienveillance des autorités des terres qu’ils tra- versaient. Bien que j’espère encore que les spécialistes trouveront un intérêt à lire le fruit de mes efforts pour tracer un portait global, ce livre a été écrit d’abord et avant tout en ayant à l’esprit les étudiants et le grand public. Pour cette raison, j’ai privilégié un système de translittération aussi simple que possible, réduisant le nombre de signes diacritiques. Dans le cas du chinois, j’ai utilisé le pinyin, sauf si une transcription plus courante était déjà bien établie. Mon intérêt pour les religions de l’Asie centrale est né d’une confé- rence de feu Hans-Joachim Klimkeit, au début des années 1990, alors que j’entamais mes études supérieures. Près de deux décennies plus tard, je lui suis encore reconnaissant d’avoir fait naître en moi cette flamme, puis de m’avoir prodigué ses conseils au moment où je ter- minais la première édition. Jerry Bentley, Richard Bulliet et Nicola DiCosmo en ont également lu le manuscrit et m’ont fait part de nom- breuses suggestions. Les commentaires de Richard Frye ont grande- ment contribué à améliorer le chapitre deux, tandis que Jan Nattier m’a guidé dans la refonte du chapitre trois, qui en avait fort besoin. Les recensions anonymes publiées dans le Journal of Early Modern History m’ont également permis de raffiner mon analyse de l’islami- sation de l’Asie intérieure. En préparant cette nouvelle édition, j’ai cherché à tenir compte de points soulevés dans les comptes rendus de Thomas Allsen, Jason Neelis, Frantz Grenet, Jason BeDuhn et Denis Sinor. Je suis, bien sûr, le seul responsable des erreurs factuelles ou d’éventuelles interprétations erronées.

Obituary: Nora Elizabeth Mary Boyce Almut Hintze Professor Nora Elizabeth Mary Boyce, who died on 4 April 2006, aged 85, was a leading authority on Zoroastrianism, the pre-Islamic religion of Iran. Born on 2 August 1920 in Darjeeling, India, she was educated in England first at Wimbledon High School and Cheltenham Ladies’s College, and then went up to Newnham College, Cambridge. There she read English for Part I of the Tripos before switching to Archaeology and Anthropology for Part II. She graduated with a double first in 1943. During the Second World War, while carrying out war work in villages near the city, she started to learn Persian with Professor V. Minorsky of SOAS (which had been evacuated from London to Cambridge during the hostilities). In 1944 she was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Anglo-Saxon Literature and Archaeology at Royal Holloway College in London. While holding this post she continued her studies of not only New but also Old and Middle Persian as well as other ancient Iranian languages with the Iranologist Walter Bruno Henning at SOAS. In 1946 she returned to Cambridge to read for a doctorate on ‘‘The Manichaean hymn-cycles in Parthian’’ under Henning’s supervision. SOAS appointed her Lecturer in Iranian studies in 1947, Reader in 1958 and Professor in 1963. Her undergraduate studies with Hector Munro Chadwick, a world authority on oral literature to whose memory she later dedicated her Zoroastrians, Their Religious Beliefs and Practices, instilled in her a keen and abiding interest in oral cultures, and it was that interest which led her to take the momentous decision to study the religious beliefs and practices of living Zoroastrians in Iran.

    In memory of Mitha & Sorab Hommie Mehta The Study of Zoroastrianism in Europe and North America With at present only an estimated 120,000 Zoroastrians world wide, one might be tempted to think that Zoroastrianism is taught and studied at only a handful of universities around the world. When looking more closely, however, one discovers that there is a substantial number of academic institutions which cover at least some aspects of the religion. Many scholars working on the topic hold university positions in departments such as Near and Middle Eastern Studies, Indo- European philology and the Comparative Study of Religions. Schmuck 12 Mackenzie 1226 15/11/2004 10:42 Page 207 David Neil MacKenzie 1926–2001 DAVID NEIL MACKENZIE passed away in Bangor on 13 October 2001, following multiple complications that resulted from a deteriorating heart disease from which he had suffered for some years. With him, Iranian Studies lost an outstanding representative, whose scholarly competence and interests spanned a broad range of ancient and modern Iranian lan- guages: such comprehensiveness is becoming increasingly unusual in modern times. Several of MacKenzie’s philological publications, espe- cially those concerning (New Iranian) Kurdish and the two Middle Iranian languages, Middle Persian and Khwarezmian, are by now well established as standard works of reference and will surely remain so for a long time. Neil (as he was known to his family and friends) was born in London on 8 April 1926, the first of the two children of the British colonial offi- cer David MacKenzie (of Scottish extraction) and his wife Ada (known as Jerry), née Hopkins. His father served at various places in West Africa, but had to return to England in the early 1930s for health reasons. In the following years he worked as a civil servant, and the family changed their place of residence several times. His son Neil thus attended schools in Slough, Windsor and Cambridge. Shortly after the outbreak of the Sec- ond World War, Neil’s mother left England for Canada, together with his younger sister. Neil chose not to go, but stayed in England with his father.

    A NEW FRAGMENT OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA'S CONTRA MAGOS 1. Introduction Until the publication, in 1968, of H. Scheinhardt's article Zitate aus drei verlorenen Schriften des Theodor von Mopsuestia1 Theodore's work Contra magos, dedicated to the Armenian bishop Mastubius2, was only known by title and by Photius' summary of its contents3. In this article Scheinhardt published, in German translation, a fragment of the Contra magos discovered by W. Strothmann in the manuscript Vat. syr. 496, and contained in Dadisho{ Qatraya's Commentary on the writings of Abba Isaiah4. The critical edition of Dadisho{'s Commentary by R. Draguet in 1972 made the Syriac text of the fragment together with its French trans- lation accessible to the scholarly world5. Since 1968 Dadisho{'s quotation, which appears to have been taken from the last section of the work6, has been the only known fragment of Contra magos. In this rather short fragment Dadisho{'s adduces Theo- dore's work “against the Magicians ( ) which is called Mastubiya () after the name of the man who asked him (scil. Theodore) (to compose it)" with the purpose of demonstrating that the souls of the righteous are in a state of enjoyment in Paradise7.
