Anselm was a prominent monastic and ecclesiastical figure in England and Normandy. In addition, he produced a number of significant meditational and theological texts. The impact of his life and influence has previously been seen almost exclusively within the sphere of contemporary and later theological writing. This thesis will argue that there was a circle of authors, largely connected to the Christ Church, Canterbury and Le Bec monasteries, who were actively incorporating Anselmian themes into their recording of historic and contemporary events. These incorporations generally took the form of the re-envisioning of characters in Anselm’s image and the insertion of themes from Anselm’s theological thought into the narratives of these texts. This study will examine how these authors shaped Anselm’s legacy in their texts and the degree to which these constructions were influenced by Anselm. No quotation from it should be published without the author's prior written consent and information derived from it should be acknowledged. 10 Introduction This thesis investigates the incorporation of Anselm of Canterbury’s theological and meditational thought into the record of historical and contemporary events in the late eleventh and early twelfth century. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that a network of Benedictine monks, primarily operating from the abbey of Bec and Christ Church, Canterbury mediated Anselm’s teachings on the nature of the world and humanity through their writings on hagiography and history. This

    Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

Called the founder of scholasticism, he is famous as the originator of the ontological argument for the existence of God. Born into the House of Candia, he entered the Benedictine order at the Abbey of Bec at the age of 27, where he became abbot in 1079. He became Archbishop of Canterbury under William II of England, and was exiled from England from 1097 to 1100, and again from 1105 to 1107 under Henry I of England as a result of the investiture controversy, the most significant conflict between Church and state in Medieval Europe. Anselm was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1720 by a Papal Bull of Pope Clement XI.

ASIEDU [Anselm lived a good part of his life without any personal knowl- edge of other religious traditions. The Cur Deus Homo contains one of the few places in his writings where he acknowledges the existence of religious “others.” The author suggests how Anselm came to this awareness and explores the extent to which his representation of unbelievers in the Cur Deus Homo derives from this late recogni- tion.] NSELM WRITES his memorable phrase, credo ut intelligam (I believe in A order that I may understand), toward the end of the opening prayer of his Proslogion on the way to elucidating his most famous argument about the existence of God. Anselm prefaces his credo with a statement of belief, and therefore suggests that only those who believe that understand- ing comes by believing have any hope of receiving understanding: “For this I also believe: that unless I believe I will not understand” (Nam et hoc credo: quia nisi credidero non intelligam). Anselm’s nisi credidero non in- telligam clearly alludes to Augustine’s much earlier nisi credideritis, non intelligetis, which the latter derives from the pre-Vulgate version of Isaiah 7:9. And yet a world of difference separates Anselm from Augustine. While Augustine lived in a world where the prospect of affirming and participat- ing in other religious traditions was a real one, Anselm lived for a good part of his life without any personal knowledge of other religious traditions.
