Local produce that the area is renowned for

Cumbria is a region blessed with rich local produce. Its outstanding natural beauty combined with its passionate and proud folk has created, in terms of food, produce that is distinctly Cumbrian and always fresh. The county is perhaps most famous for its various meat products, such as the long, spiralling Cumberland sausage, Air Dried Cumbrian Ham, and the Penrith Pepper-pot sausage. However, the region is also home to such delicacies as rum butter; Grasmere gingerbread; the staple food found in all moutaineers’ backpacks, the Kendal mint cake; and wine, jams and chutnies made from damsons grown in the area. Find some time to visit Cranstons Butchers in Penrith (information is below) for a good selection of Cumbrian pleasures.

Hiking and walking

One of the greatest attractions of the Lake District is the seemingly endless walking trails that can take you to the highest peak in , Scarfell, or across the country on the Coast to Coast walk, devised by the Lake District’s very own treasure, . One of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite walk in the Lake District is from Howtown to Glenridding and back via the Ullswater Steamers - don’t miss this one! Taking you right around Ullswater lake and over the fells, it’s a sublime hike. Be sure to stop at the campsite shop part-way along for ice cream and tea.

If you wanted to do your own exploring, and maybe devise your own hiking route, then we advise you to buy either Ordnance Survery’s ‘Pathfinder Guides’ or ‘Landranger’ or the Harvey ‘Superwalker’; all of these maps can be purchased in local bookshops and tourist offices. We must also warn you that the weather on the mountains can get treacherous rapidly - so be prepared: take suitable clothing; take a map and compass as GPS and phone signal fails regularly; and most importantly make sure someone who’s not on the mountain knows where you’re walking and when your estimated time of return is, so if they hear nothing from you, they know to contact the Mountain Rescue Team.

Keswick About 21 miles from Hallin Fell, Keswick is a thriving town settled next to the idyllic Derwentwater, forever busy with walkers, outdoor enthusiasts and artists. Keswick is perhaps, apart from Ambleside, the Lake District’s most beautiful town. Brimming with cafés, art galleries and the largest collection of outdoor shops in the country, the town is relatively small, despite the large quantity of things to do. Often regarded as the best outdoor shop in the country, George Fisher (2 Borrowdale Road, Keswick, CA12 5DA) has a large range of outdoor gear and walking boots. Upstairs is Abraham’s Café which serves great coffee and cake. Local Festivals and Events

The Lake District is home to some excellent festivals. Most of them occur around the summer months, like the Keswick Mountain Festival (www.keswickmountainfestival.co.uk) which usually happens in the month of May. This wonderful festival attracts over 16,000 visitors each year, from the very young to the very old, who all share an interest in the great outdoors. Listen to bushcraft lectures from experts like Ray Mears, or hear stories from sporting heros like Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee, or simply wander around the festival village and listen to the great live bands playing on the various stages.

The Keswick Beer Festival (www.keswickbeerfestival.co.uk) normally occurs around the month of June, and attracts over 6,000 beer enthusiasts each year. Stocking enough beer and ale to fill Derwentwater twice over, independant breweries from the Lakes and all around the world flock to Keswick for the weekend to showcase their favourite tipples.

Usually taking place at the end of July, the annual Ambleside Sports Day (www.amblesidesports.co.uk) is home to some rather unorthodox sporting events. For over 200 years the town competes in things like cycle races, Cumberland wrestling (which some believe stemmed from the Vikings), hound trailing, and track racing.
