Krolczyk, & James L. Hershey “Where do you get your ideas?” Probably the question most often asked of science fiction writers. They must get sick of hearing it, and some have been known to fabricate totally ludicrous answers simply to appease the questioner. Those that do answer seri­ ously usually say their ideas just come to them from out of the blue, or spon­ taneously while typing, which is generally the way it does happen. But with some of John Varley’s story ideas (and titles!) you really have to wonder. John Varley (who goes by his mid­ dle name, Herb) was born in Austin, Texas in 1947 (he witholds the exact date because astrology freaks really irk him). He wrote stories as a kid growing up in a small Texas town, and moved around the state before graduating from high school in Nederland. At Michigan State he started out as a physics major and switched to English because he was going to be a film script writer. His original intention was to become a phy­ sicist, his second choice: being an astro­ nomer. After about a year he dropped out and roamed around the country a bit before going to San Francisco to be­ come a hippie, during which time he didn’t write at all or read much. John Varley started writing in 1973 because of financial difficulties. He and his wife, Anet Mconel, live in Oregon now, along with their three boys: Mau­ rice, Roger, and Stefan. Writing, as anyone who has ever tried knows, is a lonely, frustrating ex­ perience. Rejection slip after rejection slip tend to put a damper on anyone’s enthusiasm. This problem John Varley had only once, with his first novel, Gas Giant, which he admits is terribly written and anti-climatic. Everything else he has written has been published. In this respect, he considers himself lucky. To illustrate this, he points out that after he started selling his stories on a regular basis, he began to think about obtaining an agent. Unfortunate­ ly he didn’t know where to start, or who to contact. And the Department doesn't care about collateral damage.Besides this large outside enemy, they are also dealing with citizens of Surebleak who would like to return things to the way it was before Pat Rin arrived and changed Surebleak to meet his needs.

    Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I want to examine the ways in which Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has used narrative, format and aesthetic to move ever closer to the notion of the literary text. Particularly going to consider how it exploits the author function and enacts the struggle for cultural worth that comics seem consistently engaged in. Sandman is an epic series rewriting a golden-age superhero into an immortal deity. It is best remembered for its mythological content and literary references, and these elements have allowed it to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a singular GN but a maxi-series across multiple trade paperbacks!). Neil Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact this artistic variety destabilises clear-cut authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the graphic novel branding. SLIDE: literary pix Sandman was launched in 1989 and became the flagship title for DC’s new Vertigo imprint. Vertigo’s publications contributed heavily to the mainstream cultural revaluation of comics as graphic novels, and critics such as Candace West have argued that Sandman in particular was instrumental here due to the attention the series received from mainstream media such as Rolling Stone magazine.

    GRAPHIC NOVELS IN YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY Jesse Karp ILLUSTRATED BY Rush Kress AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CHICAGO 2012 For more than ten years, JESSE KARP has been a school librarian at LREI (Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School), one of Manhattan’s oldest independent schools and a long-standing leader in progressive education. He works with students across the cur- riculum, from beginning readers to high school students, with all kinds of material, includ- ing graphic novels. He regularly reviews graphic novels and picture books for Booklist and contributes to the magazine’s yearly graphic novel best list roundup; he has written articles for Book Links and American Libraries as well. He has delivered seminars on the sequen- tial art form at Pratt Institute and Queens College and teaches a graduate course about the history and analysis of the form at Pratt. He has served as a graphic novel panelist at Book Expo America for two years running and served on YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens committee from 2009 to 2012. He cocreated the education webcomic Dr. Lollipop and is the author of the young adult novel Those That Wake, which is set in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
