12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. More Depth to the Liaden UniverseBy K. M. MartinThis eighteenth Liaden Universe novel focuses on change both personal and galactic. I don't think that it is a book for someone new to the Liaden novels though the author's do try to assist a new reader in the Prologue. But for long- standing fans of this series (one that I have been reading since about 1985), this story was a marvel and a wonder.Korval is now situated on Surebleak and trying to find a place for itself. They are also trying to find their place in the larger galactic community. While they did their best - including leveling parts of Liad - to defeat the Department of the Interior, they were not able to completely eradicate it. The remaining much-diminished Department has set the elimination of Korval as its only focus. And the Department doesn't care about collateral damage.Besides this large outside enemy, they are also dealing with citizens of Surebleak who would like to return things to the way it was before Pat Rin arrived and changed Surebleak to meet his needs. It is easy to see that changing the culture on Surebleak won't be an easy process.This story is told from multiple viewpoints which all weave together to form the whole. Miri and Val Con are key voices but we also hear from Rys, the only Agent of Change besides Val Con who managed to overcome the Department's programming, Quin who represents one of the next generation of Korval, Hazenthull Explorer, one of the Xtrang who are now members of Korval, Kamele Waitley and a few others. Through their eyes, we see what is happening on Surebleak which is going through a major change in society and culture.We catch up with a number of the characters who have been introduced in the earlier books in this series. I loved seeing them again but wish that I could have seen more about Theo, Daav and Aelliana. Those tiny glimpses in the Interludes just whet my appetite for more. I really enjoyed seeing Korval and Surebleak from Kamele Waitley's point of view since we usually don't see that view. I also enjoyed learning more about Kareen and seeing her become a less one- sided character.Fans of the series won't want to miss this addition. New readers will want to read some of the earlier books to find out more about the intriguing characters who have roles in this story.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For Liaden Aficionados PrincipallyBy T MacIn my summary opinion, this was not a book which those other than diehard fans of Ms. Lee and Mr. Miller's Liaden universe would enjoy. I have enjoyed much of what Ms. Lee and Mr. Miller have written, and particularly their books of the Liaden universe. I know the background of the Tree-and-Dragon, clan Korval, and witnessed the characters' development. My thought, as I read this book was that it was far too specialized; it does NOT at all stand alone. Anyone who picks this book up as their first by these authors would probably not touch another book by them. The reason for this statement lies in the answers about plot, mood, characters, and pace. Characters, unless you recall and know them from previous books, have none of the dimension and depth which has been characteristic of Mr. Lee and Ms. Miller's prior works. The development and depth of the protagonists, and their real successes and growth - happened elsewhere and else when. The pace is fast, or slow, depending upon which part of the book you are reading, and which story or set of characters is being addressed. The book does not have any single plot, and was clearly not written to a discernible outline. Its "plot" follows a series of threads, which overlap, and are tangled, as if it consists of a number of short stories that were perhaps shuffled and mixed into non-contiguous "chapters". It neither begins, nor ends, in that situations which open up regarding characters that we must know from prior books, solutions and corrections are to be implemented, but follow-up to completion of the various stories is too often absent. As examples for the aficionados, Theo Whatley is named, and her latest dire situation addressed, but she is not present nor active in this book, and whatever outcome there is or will be with regard to her is absent from this book. Daav yos'Phelium / Jen Sar Kilati / Aelliana's situation is addressed, and yet the outcome is likely going to be very inconsiderate for at least one of the associated characters - which occurs or will occur outside of this book. The study of solutions to a great number of problems, and trial corrections began or are (partially) continued in this book. The resolutions are still pending. Setting up cliffhangers in the midst of a large quantity of other stories and other people, yet omitting the resolutions was a bit rude of the writers and publisher, I thought. For those who do not yet know Lee and Miller, please go to Agent of Change, Carpe Diem, Balance of Trade, and all those other excellent books and open this one *if* (or when) you have enjoyed the prequels!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I love all the books and read them again and againBy pistooI started with the first book of the Liaden universe and I have not stopped.I love all the books and read them again and again.The Dragon in Exile starts a new era with one Member who is cloned again as well as his dead wife much younger by the Uncle,andI cannot wait for their arrival in the new Home of the Clan at the same time there is one small group stuck with intelligent plane . Kamelenot aware that her companion has found his wife. It is wonderful to have so much to look forward to.Lee/Miller will keep me young for a long time. the Korval Clan is so brilliant.
