J Chin Med 24(1): 65-84, 2013 65 TEXTUAL RESEARCH FOR LATIN NAMES AND MEDICINAL EFFECTS OF LOW GRADE DRUGS IN SHENNONGBENCAOJING Shu-Ling Liu*, Chao-Lin Kuo, Yu-Jen Ko, Ming-Tsuen Hsieh Department of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chinese Medicine Resources, College of Pharmacy, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan ( Received 11th May 2012, accepted 23th August 2012 ) The textual research for Latin names and medicinal effects of Shennongbencaojing, after Top Grade and Medium Grade, the Low Grade Drugs was studied. The Low Grade Drugs were divided, in the same way for Top and Medium Grade Drugs, into 6 groups and their drugs number were also shown in the following order: Plant (72 drugs), Mineral (7 drugs), Animal (6 drugs), Fish and Shellfish (2 drugs), Insect (14 drugs) and Other (2 drugs). The number of Low Grade Drugs in Sun’s edition was summed up to 103. In this study, many drugs were considered to be toxic such as: Aconitum carmichaeli (No. 1), Pinellia ternata (No. 4), Rheum palmatum (No. 7), Hyoscyamus niger (No. 10), Veratrum nigrum (No. 13), Gelsemium elegans (No. 14), Dichroa febrifuga (No. 17), Euphorbia pekinensis (No. 24), Agrimonia pilosa (No. 29), Rhododendron molle (No. 30), Phytolacca acinosa (No. 31) etc. They were also listed in the Poisonous Weeds Class of Compendium of Materia Medica. Modern research has confirmed that most of the Low Grade Drugs are toxic as well. For four drugs, Guanjun (No. 22), Yangtao (No. 37), Wujiu (No. 41) and Yaoshigen (No. 64) their botanical names have not yet been defined. Some drugs might have different medicinal names by various used parts but were originated in the same scientific name. -

The context, Chinese characters, IPA transcription, and an English translation are given for the songs. The music for the songs is also presented and discussed. Key words: shehuo~ yangge— lunar New Year— Qinghai— folk music— folk dancing— ritual songs Asian Folklore Studies, Volume 58,1999: 121-187 ollections in Western-language translations of songs performed dur ing the lunar New Year period in Chinese villages are rare. This is C particularly true for such remote areas of China as the northwestern, multi-ethnic province of Qinghai.1 Consequently, this paper is significant in presenting a collection of songs as originally sung during the lunar New Year in a single Qinghai Han village. This is accomplished by presenting the Chinese characters for the songs, an International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcription, an English translation, a musical description of the songs, and the context in which the songs are performed. -

Laughter Connects the Sacred and the Sexual: The Blooming of Parody in Edo Culture Yasunori Kojima (ICU) 1. Introduction This paper takes a look at the full bloom of parody in Edo culture, especially with respect to laughter, which, I believe, serves as a connection between the sacred and the sexual. Historians tend to follow the golden rule: erase yourself and let the documents speak for themselves. So, in a similar manner, I am letting parody speak for itself. Therefore, this paper does not seek to analyze; rather it merely introduces several examples of parody. Nonetheless, these examples speak eloquently on how people during the Edo period enjoyed an immensely rich and playful culture of parody. As an icebreaker, I begin by introducing a comic book by Ishii Hisaichi, titled Gendai shisô no sonansha-tachi (The Shipwrecked Modern Philosophers). This is an excellent work of parody based on the series Gendai shisô no bôkensha-tachi (The Adventurous Modern Philosophers) published by Kodansha, an introductory series focusing on 34 prominent philosophers (Wittgenstein, Kuhn, Whitehead, Benjamin, Bataille, Barthes, Gadamer, Lacan, Foucault, Arendt, and Derrida among others). The point of this parody is that it took philosophy as its target, instead of politics or literature. The essence of often-abstruse modern philosophy is not only compressed within the four boxes of each comic strip, but is titillated, mocked, and even made the subject of laughter. Of course, the basic thought of each philosopher is outlined next to the comic strip; the gags would not make much sense if the reader were totally lacking knowledge about philosophy. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kingston University Research Repository ARTICLE DOI: 10.1057/s41599-017-0038-8 OPEN East Asian Gothic: a definition Colette Balmain1 ABSTRACT This paper offers a definition of East Asian Gothic cinema in which a shared cultural mythology, based upon cultural proximity and intra-regional homologies, provides a cinematic template of ghosts and ghouls together with a grotesque menagerie of shape- shifting animals, imagined as either deities or demons. East Asian Gothic is an umbrella term which encompasses the cinemas of PRC, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, 1234567890 acknowledging the difficult histories and conflicts between the nations, as well as film making practices and industries. This is in opposition to critical work which views East Asian gothic and horror films as extensions of Japanese horror, and therefore J-Horror as a meta-genre; for example David Kalat in J-Horror (2007) and Axelle Carolyn in It Lives Again! Horror Films in the New Millennium (2008), or focus almost solely on the relationship between contemporary Western and East Asian Horror cinema through an analysis of the remake. In order to demonstrate the transnational and regional flows that form East Asian gothic cinema, this paper focuses in on one of the oldest and most enduring gothic figures found in literature and mythology across East Asia, the nine-tailed fox: known as the huli jin in China, gumiho in Korea and kitsune in Japan. While much has been written about the vengeful ghost, little attention has been paid to that of the fox-spirit even though ‘she’ is ubiquitous in East Asian popular culture. -
