The Movements and Actions of the King's Own Scottish Borderers

The Regiment raised 14 and was awarded 66 Battle Honours and four Victoria Crosses losing 7,740 men during the course of the war.

1st 4 Stationed in Lucknow, India at the outbreak of war. Recalled to Britain. 2 November 1914 Set sail from Bombay and arrived in Egypt on 17 November 1914. 28 December 1914 Arrived in Plymouth, then moved to Warley in January and on to Rugby to join the 87th Brigade of the 29th . 18 March 1915 Mobilised for war and sailed for Egypt from Avonmouth. 30 March 1915 Arrived in Mudros, Greece. 25 April 1915 Landed at Gallipoli, where they were involved in various actions on the Gallipoli peninsular. 8 January 1916 Evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Alexandria. 18 March 1916 Moved to Marseilles where the Division was involved in various action on the Western Front. During 1916 ; Battle of the Transloy Ridges. During 1917 First Battle of the Scarpe; Second Battle of the Scarpe; Third Battle of the Scarpe; Battle of Langemarck; ; Battle of Poelcapelle; . During 1918 Battle of Estaires; Battle of Messines 1918; Battle of Hazebrouck; Battle of Bailleul; Action of Outtersteene Ridge; Capture of Ploegsteert and Hill 63; Battle of Ypres 1918; Battle of Courtrai. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in , Celles, SW Renaix. This Division was one of those selected to occupy at the Rhine bridgehead, demobilization was not complete until March 1919.

2nd Battalion 4 August 1914 Stationed in Dublin, Ireland at the outbreak of war and joined the 13th Brigade of the 5th Division. 15 August 1914 Mobilised for war and landed at Havre, where the Division was involved in various action on the Western Front. December 1917 Moved to Italy in an effort to strength Italian resistance. 7 April 1918 Recalled back to France and again engaged in action on the Western Front. During 1918 Battle of Hazebrouck; Battle of Albert; Battle of ; Battle of Drocourt-Queant; Battle of the Epehy; Battle of the Canal du Nord; Pursuit to the Selle; Battle of the Selle. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in France near Le Quesnoy.

3rd (Reserve) Battalion 4 August 1914 Stationed in Dumfries, Scotland at the outbreak of war. 9 August 1914 Moved to Portland and Weymouth, Dorset. April 1915 Moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. Dec 1917 Stationed at Templemore, Ireland. May 1918 Stationed at Claremorris, Ireland.

1/4th (The Border) Battalion Territorial Forces 4 August 1914 Stationed at Galashiels, Scottish Borders, part of the South Scottish Brigade of the Lowland Division then moved to Cambusbarron near Stirling. 11 May 1915 Became the 155th Brigade of the 52nd Division. 24 May 1915 Mobilised for war and sailed for Gallipoli from Liverpool. 14 June 1915 Arrived in Gallipoli via Alexandria. Engaged in various action. During 1915 Gully Ravine; Achi Baba Nullah; Krithia Nullahs. During 1916 The evacuation of Helles. 8 January 1916 Evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Alexandria via Mudros. Pnvolved in the defence of No 3 Section of the Suez Canal as well as various other actions in the area. During 1917 First, Second and Third Battles of Gaza; Wadi el Hesi; El Maghar; capture of Junction Station; Battle of Nabi Samweil; Battle of Jaffa. 17 April1918 Moved to Marseilles. Involved in Battle of Albert; Battle of the Scarpe; Battle of the Drocourt-Queant Line; Battle of the Canal du Nord; Final Advance in Artois. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in Belgium, Sirault, NW Mons. 1/5th (Dumfries & Galloway) Battalion Territorial Forces 4 August 1914 Stationed at Dumfries, Scotland, part of the South Scottish Brigade of the Lowland Division then moved to Bannockburn near Stirling. 11 May 1915 Became the 155th Brigade of the 52nd Division. 21 May 1915 Mobilised for war and sailed for Gallipoli from Liverpool. 6 June 1915 Arrived in Gallipoli via Mudros and engaged in various actions. 2/4th (The Border) Battalion Territorial Force September 1914 Formed at Galashiels, Scottish Borders. January 1915 Joined the 194th Brigade of the 65th Division. August 1915 Moved to Hawick, Scottish Borders. November 1915 Combined with the 2/5th Battalion to form No 14 Battalion in the 194th Brigade.

2/5th (Dumfries & Galloway) Battalion Territorial Force September 1914 Formed at Dumfries. January 1915 Joined the 194th Brigade of the 65th Division. August 1915 Moved to Rumbling Bridge, and Milnathort, Perth Scotland. November 1915 Combined with the 2/5th Battalion to form No 14 Battalion in the 194th Brigade and moved to Falkirk. January 1916 Absorbed 2/4th Battalion. February 1916 Moved to Chelmsford, Essex. January 1917 Moved to Ballykinler, Ireland. 15 May 1918 Disbanded in Curragh, Ireland.

3/4th and 3/5th Battalion Territorial Force January 1914 Formed at Galashiels and Dumfries, Scottish Borders. Early 1916 Moved to Ripon, Harrogate. 8 April 1916 Became the 4th and 5th (Reserve) Battalions. 1 5th Battalion absorbed by 4th Battalion at Catterick, North Yorkshire, in the Lowland Reserve Brigade. October 1917 Moved to Dunfermline, Fife where it remained.

6th (Service) Battalion August 1914 Formed at Berwick-on-Tweed as part of the First New Army (K1), then moved to Bordon, East Hampshire and joined the 28th Brigade of the 9th Division. March 1915 Moved to Bramshott, East Hampshire. 12 May 1915 Mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne, France where they were engaged in various action on the Western Front. During 1915 . During 1916 Battle of Albert; Battle of Bazentin; ; . 6 May 1916 Transferred to 27th Brigade of the 9th Division and continued to engage in action on the Western Front. During 1917 First Battle of the Scarpe; Second Battle of the Scarpe; First ; Action of Welsh Ridge. During 1918 Battle of St Quentin; First Battle of Bapaume; Battle of Messines; Battle of Bailleul; First Battle of Kemmel; Second Battle of Kemmel. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in Belgium near Courtrai. This Division was one of those selected to occupy Germany at Cologne bridgehead, demobilization was not complete until February 1919.

7th and 8th (Service) Battalion September 1914 Formed at Berwick-on-Tweed, part of Second New Army (K2), moved to Bordon, joined the 46th Brigade of the 15th Division. February 1915 Moved to Winchester, Hampshire. April 1915 Moved to Salisbury Plain (Park House and Chisledon Camps). 10 July 1915 Mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne, France where they were engaged in various action on the Western Front. During 1915 The Battle of Loos. During 1916 Actions of Spring 1916; Battle of Pozieres; Battle of Flers- Courcelette; Battle of Le Transloy. 28 May 1916 Amalgamated with the 8th Battalion to form the 7/8th Battalion. During 1917 First Battle of the Scarpe; Second Battle of the Scarpe; Battle of Pilckem; Battle of Langemark. During 1918 First Battle of Bapaume; First ; Battle of the Soissonnais; Battles of the Marne; Final Advance in Artois. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in Tongres-Notre-Dame, Belgium, south of Ath. 9th (Reserve) Battalion November 1914 Formed at Portland as a service Battalion in the Fourth New Army (K4), and joined the 102nd Brigade of the 34th Division. February 1915 Moved to Dorchester. 10 April 1915 Became the Second Reserve Battalion. June 1915 Moved to Stobs Military Camp, Hawick. October 1915 Moved to Catterick in the 12th reserve brigade. April 1916 Moved to Kinghorn, Fife. 1 September 1916 Became the 53rd Training Reserve Battalion in the 12th Reserve Brigade.

10th (Reserve) Battalion 11 June 1918 Formed in Lederzeele, France as the 9th Garrison Guard Battalion then became the 10th (Garrison) Battalion in the 120th Brigade of the 40th Division. 13 July 1918 Became a service Battalion. 11 November 1918 Ended the war in Belgium near Pecq East of Roubaix.
