  • Anatomies of Spanish Settlers in Malta Between 1580 and 1648: Their Family Stories Simon Mercieca [email protected]
Anatomies of Spanish Settlers in Malta between 1580 and 1648: Their Family Stories Simon Mercieca [email protected] Abstract: This paper will attempt to reconstruct the different identity kits of Spanish settlers in Malta between 1580 and 1648. The analysis shall use the Status Liberi documentation which is a series of Ecclesiastical Acts recording the assessment of foreigners by an ecclesiastical judge of those outsiders who wished to get married in Malta. This procedure was undertaken to verify whether the candidate was single or not, the former being and remains a sine qua non for marriage. The surviving documents recount the lives of these settlers before taking up permanent residence in Malta and highlight the reason behind their decision to settle down in Malta. The most fascinating aspect of these documents is that these stories are recounted by the protagonists themselves. They give insight to issues of identity and shared memory among the Spanish settlers. In the majority, they were simple folk without any pretensions or extraordinary expectations. Were it not for such a prerequisite their life histories would have been lost forever. Keywords: Malta, Spaniards, Status Liberi, marriage, seafaring, identity The Research Methodology n the following analysis I will attempt the reconstruction of what one might term to have been a ‘Spanish’ identity in Malta at a time Iwhen Europe was passing through widespread political turmoil as a result of the Wars of Religion. My historical-critical interpretation of this past migratory experience will be based on the patchy survival of court Symposia Melitensia Number 11 (2015) SYMPOSIA MELITENSIA NUMBER 11 (2015) records.

(May 2004) Ayse Devrim Atauz, B.S., Middle East Technical University; M.A., Bilkent University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kevin Crisman Located approximately in the middle of the central Mediterranean channel, the Maltese Archipelago was touched by the historical events that effected the political, economic and cultural environment of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The islands were close to the major maritime routes throughout history and they were often on the border between clashing military, political, religious, and cultural entities. For these reasons, the islands were presumed to have been strategically and economically important, and, thus, frequented by ships. An underwater archaeological survey around the archipelago revealed the scarcity of submerged cultural remains, especially pertaining to shipping and navigation.

  • The St. John's Co-Cathedral Affair- A
THE ST. JOHN'S CO-CATHEDRAL AFFAIR A STUDY OF A DISPUTE BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE IN MALTA OVER PROPERTY RIGHTS* Mario Buhagiar INTRODUCTION The Cathedral Church of StJohn the Baptist in La Valletta, the capital city of the minuscule Mediterranean Island Republic of Malta has on several occasions in modern history been the cause of friction between the Maltese Church and State over property rights. A study of the dispute can as a result cast interesting light on how works of art or architecture can sometimes upset the balance of power in an eminently Catholic community in which the Church has until1964- when the Island achieved political independence from Great Britain-enjoyed a medieval triumphalism that enabled it to play a decisive role in shaping the political destiny ofthe Island. 1 THE KNIGHTS' PERIOD: 1578-1798 Built between 1573 and 1577 and consecrated on 20 February, 1578, the church is the masterpiece of the Maltese architect Gieronimo Cassar (1530-1593)2 and it is adorned with splendid works of art that include two paintings by Caravaggio (1583-1610) which in 1957 were the cause of a politico-religious crisis which will be discussed at length in this paper. The founder, Grand Master Jean l'Eveque de la Cassiere (1572-1581), had it built purposely as the Conventual Church of the Hospitaller Military Order of StJohn of Jerusalem- more commonly known as the Kinghts of StJohn- who since 1530 had enjoyed feudal rights over the Maltese Islands. 3 The Knights were a monastic order with professed members who were bound by the triple vow of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience.
