(May 2004) Ayse Devrim Atauz, B.S., Middle East Technical University; M.A., Bilkent University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kevin Crisman Located approximately in the middle of the central Mediterranean channel, the Maltese Archipelago was touched by the historical events that effected the political, economic and cultural environment of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The islands were close to the major maritime routes throughout history and they were often on the border between clashing military, political, religious, and cultural entities. For these reasons, the islands were presumed to have been strategically and economically important, and, thus, frequented by ships. An underwater archaeological survey around the archipelago revealed the scarcity of submerged cultural remains, especially pertaining to shipping and navigation. Preliminary findings elucidate a story that contrasts with the picture presented by modern history and historiography. In this sense, a comparison of the underwater archaeological data with the information gathered through a detailed study of Maltese maritime history clearly shows that the islands were attributed an exaggerated importance in historical texts, due to political and religious trends that are rooted in the period during which the islands were under the control of the Order of Saint John. An objective investigation of the historical and archaeological material provides a more balanced picture, and places the islands in a Mediterranean-wide historical iv framework from the first colonization of the archipelago eight thousands years ago to the twentieth century. v To my parents Sevil and Akın Atauz vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my dissertation committee: Dr. Kevin Crisman, Dr. Cemal Pulak, Dr. Filipe Castro and Dr. James Bradford, for the preparation of this dissertation and providing me advice and guidance throughout my doctoral studies at Texas A&M University. NMA provided the vehicle for our transportation, assigned two of its limited staff for our work, and provided space in the museum building for the wet storage, conservation, photography, drafting and study of the artifacts. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Sperre A.S provided the equipment and personnel for the ROV survey. Fredrik Soreide of NTNU and Thor Olav viii Sperre of Sperre A.S. both sacrificed their vacations to make the ROV equipment available for the project.     Anatomies of Spanish Settlers in Malta between 1580 and 1648: Their Family Stories Simon Mercieca [email protected] Abstract: This paper will attempt to reconstruct the different identity kits of Spanish settlers in Malta between 1580 and 1648. The analysis shall use the Status Liberi documentation which is a series of Ecclesiastical Acts recording the assessment of foreigners by an ecclesiastical judge of those outsiders who wished to get married in Malta. This procedure was undertaken to verify whether the candidate was single or not, the former being and remains a sine qua non for marriage. The surviving documents recount the lives of these settlers before taking up permanent residence in Malta and highlight the reason behind their decision to settle down in Malta. The most fascinating aspect of these documents is that these stories are recounted by the protagonists themselves. They give insight to issues of identity and shared memory among the Spanish settlers. In the majority, they were simple folk without any pretensions or extraordinary expectations. Were it not for such a prerequisite their life histories would have been lost forever.     DISTRIBUTION OF VILLAS AND SOME OF THE MAL TESE ECONOMY IN THE ROMAN PERIOD by ANTIIONY BONANNO CERTAINLY one of the most striking aspects of the Maltese archae­ ology of the Roman period is the comparatively large number of villas, or rural houses, distributed in different areas of the two major islands of the Maltese archipelago. Already twenty-two sites have been recorded, their state of preservation ranging from just a few foundation wall s to full-seal e buil din g compl exe s. By far the largest and most impressive remains of such buildings are those excavated in recent years by the Italian Mission from the University of Rome at San Pawl Milqi.l Another villa, not much smaller in scale, was excavated in 1915 by Ashby at Ta' Kacca­ tura, near Biri:ebbuga, on the other side of the valley opposite the well-known prehistoric site of Gnar Dalam. 2 Yet another is cur­ rently being excavated by the Mus~um Department at Zejtun. 3 The thermal complex of Gnajn Tuffiena, decorated with pleasant and varied geometrical mosaics, must have formed part of a sumptuous villa. 4 Traces of similar baths have been recorded at Marsaxlokk,5 and another villa with richly patterned mosaics was brought to light at Ramla Bay in Gozo. 6 Other sites which have produced re­ mains of villas are: Tas-Sittin (near Fawwara), Ras ir-Raheb (near Bahrija), Fiddien (near ,Mtahleb), Wardija, Bidnija, Hal Far and St. Thomas Bay.7, Until its name is corrected it may not be super­ fluous to repeat that the so-called 'Roman Villa' of Rabat is not a villa at all, but a Roman town house.
